Chapter 27

Chapter 27

Although Grandma Li was reluctant, she was coaxed into living in Zhao Lin's house by several people.

Zhao Lin planned to hire a temporary caregiver, but was stopped by Yan Runqing after finding out.

"We've been neighbors for years. Whenever we have problems, Aunt Li is the first one to lend a hand. Now that she's sick, I'll treat her like a daughter and show my filial piety to her."

He Xi also echoed him, which made the old man almost cry again.

Yan Runqing helped the old man lie down, pushed the two people out of the bedroom and said, "I'll be watching over you here, you two should focus on your studies. Especially you——"

She warned her daughter, "I won't be able to take care of you these days. Keep an eye on your brother and don't let him play games on his phone anymore."

He Xi nodded repeatedly, but the nagging of the people around him continued.

"Yuanyuan is younger than you, so it's not too much for him to call you sister. You should also take care of him, okay?"

"Oh, I see."

She was almost clutching her head, like a tight ring around her neck. And what about the older sister? Did she seem philanthropic? She was already irritated to death by the other one at home.

He Xi fled into the elevator, his finger desperately pressing the close button. Someone followed him in, forcing the elevator door open and shut, making the small space feel cramped.

She looked behind her through the mirrored elevator door and saw Zhao Lin leaning lazily on the armrest of the car. As if he felt the scrutiny, he raised his eyebrows and looked up.

"Well... let me be clear, I don't have the habit of casually claiming kinship!"

As soon as she finished speaking, the elevator fell into a deathly silence. Shui Lingling spat out her inner complaints, her lips pursed in silence, wishing she could find a hole to crawl into.

The person behind her seemed not to hear her and just stared at her silently for a long time without moving.

"bite--"

The elevator reached the first floor. She sighed deeply and hurried out. Just then, a sharp voice came from behind her: "I was confused because of the fever last time. Don't worry about it. It won't happen again."

The cold wind blowing in her face made He Xi shiver. She stammered, not knowing what to say. It was rare to see him being so humble, which made her seem petty.

"That's not what I meant..."

Why didn't I realize he had such good words before? She squeezed out a few words from between her teeth with some resentment, quickly caught up with the boy who passed by her, turned her head and glanced at his face - it was his usual expressionless face.

"Hey, you're not mad, are you?"

He Xi asked nervously, she didn't want the relationship between them, which had finally eased a little, to become tense again.

He chased faster and faster, and finally she was about to jog when she saw Zhao Lin slow down.

"Short legs."

"You're quite tall."

The two of them bickered all the way, and she clenched her fists tightly, afraid that she would accidentally reach out and twist his ears.

As I walked out of the complex and headed home, it was already completely dark. The plane trees along the roadside were sparsely covered with withered yellow leaves, which swayed and spun in the wind, falling from the sky.

He Xi looked at the scene in front of him and suddenly thought of something, and turned his head abruptly to look at Zhao Lin.

"My mother is known for being restless. She'll clean your house inside and out within a day."

"In that case I will be happy to pay Auntie."

What? That's not what she meant! She was so pissed off by his train of thought.

"I mean, I hope she doesn't find those... sketches of yours."

He Xi stuttered, but she still felt it was necessary to remind him, otherwise it would cause unnecessary misunderstandings.

"Well, it's okay if Auntie sees it, I'll just say you're the model I found for my copy."

She could hear the teasing in the tone of the man in front of her, and seeing him blinking his big innocent eyes, she was very sure that he was teasing her, and she could no longer hold back the anger that she had suppressed all the way.

She jumped up at lightning speed and tried to pull Zhao Lin's ear. Just when she was about to succeed, the person next to her seemed to notice something and dodged to the side.

He Xi missed her target and was about to fall to the frozen ground. At the critical moment, she closed her eyes tightly.

In an instant, she did not feel the pain she had imagined, but instead felt a warm wall of flesh.

Slowly opening her eyes, she struggled to get out of the boy's arms and stood awkwardly. She tugged at the hem of her clothes, then looked down to see Zhao Lin sitting on the ground with a helpless look on his face.

"You deserved it because you were the one who told you to hide first."

After she finished speaking, she curled her lips guiltily and walked forward.

Watching her hesitant steps, Zhao Lin's heart was beating wildly. Recalling the soft body he had briefly touched in his arms just now, his ears turned red.

"hiss…"

A faint gasp came from behind him, and He Xi's already slow pace came to a halt. Turning back, he saw Zhao Lin struggling to stand up, holding onto the wall with a look of pain on his face.

"Are you okay?"

It is said that bones become brittle in winter. If something were to happen to her by a fall, she couldn't imagine the scene of both the grandmother and the granddaughter lying in bed.

"I feel like my legs are weak."

He Xi quickly ran up to him and asked, "Is it serious? If not, I'll call 120."

"I don't think it's a big problem. Help me back first."

As Zhao Lin said this, he put half of his strength on her, not giving her much time to think.

The bright red street lights stretched their shadows very long. She was out of breath after walking halfway through the not-so-far distance.

"Are you doing this on purpose? Are you trying to take revenge on me?" He Xi put his hands on his hips and turned to stare at the person in front of him suspiciously.

"I like you so much that I can't wait for you to take revenge on me."

"Wha…what?"

He Xi's ears were buzzing and he felt like he was petrified on the spot.

She slowly turned her head to look at the person who spoke, with a naughty smile on her face.

"Boring, not funny at all!"

She glared at him hatefully, raised her foot and hit his instep hard, then shook off the arm on her shoulder and dodged far away.

Zhao Lin was so upset by her sudden series of actions that he no longer looked as weak as before.

"Okay, you're playing tricks on me, right?!"

Seeing He Xi running towards his ear again, he dodged and ran forward.

The two of them chased each other all the way, and by the time she got home she was exhausted and out of breath.

"Who is chasing you?"

He Xu, who was sitting on the sofa, took a moment to glance at her. It was rare to see his sister so careless about her image. He shoved his phone into the hands of Zhao Lin, who had walked in a few minutes ago, and hurried over to He Xi, looking her over.

"On the way back, I met an injured tabby cat. I wanted to take it to the hospital, but it got so angry that it scratched me and ran away. I couldn't catch up with it."

"Let me see. If it's serious, I need to get a rabies vaccine, right?"

“Ahem—”

He Xu looked worried and was about to reach out to check his sister's wound when he heard someone coughing on the sofa.

He turned around and followed his gaze, and found that his elder sister was staring at Brother Lin with eyes as if she was about to spit fire.

His mind raced as he stared at the two of them in disbelief.
