Chapter 21
The friend request that had made He Xi angry and troubled for half the night was approved the next afternoon.
After returning home from evening self-study, she unlocked her phone while soaking her feet. The message notification that came into her sight made her curl her lips in annoyance.
I typed a few words and deleted them all before sending them.
"Forget it, otherwise it will seem like I'm asking for too much." He Xi complained inwardly and exited the chat interface.
Therefore, although the two added each other on the chat software, they just lay quietly in each other's friend list.
Just when He Xi thought they would always "keep their distance and live in peace", Lancheng No. 6 Middle School welcomed new students to start school.
Within two days of reporting for the first year of high school, Zhao Lin's reputation had spread throughout the entire campus.
"Who would have thought that one day I would have another encounter with Tan Zheng because of my cheap cousin."
He Xi tried his best to suppress the annoyance that welled up in his heart. He really didn't understand why Zhao Lin had to get entangled with Tan Zheng again and again.
"I heard before that the boy was thrown back to Lancheng by his father because of causing trouble. Seeing him today, he really is a troublesome guy."
The two walked back, and Yang Jia was particularly excited when she talked about the news that had been circulating in the school since the afternoon.
He Xi took the phone she handed over. The girl in the video looked very cool, as if she didn't care about the strange looks around her. "Zhao Lin——!"
The clear and crisp sound was so penetrating that people from the neighboring groups turned their heads frequently.
"Here, I bought it especially for you."
The boy whose name was called walked into the camera after a while. Compared to the girl's excitement, he seemed a little uninterested.
Maybe it was because of the hot weather, his face was a little flushed, the corners of his tightly pursed lips were slightly dry, and he looked a little listless.
Tan Zheng handed the water to him. Zhao Lin stared at the bottle for a few seconds, then his eyes turned across the camera, he lowered his eyes and sneered in confusion before taking the water.
"It's interesting that someone handed me a pillow just when I felt sleepy!"
He Xi understood what Yang Jia meant with just one sentence. He glanced at her with some disapproval, but didn't know how to start.
The alley leading home was almost at the end, and the two were about to part. He Xi hesitated for a moment but still grabbed her sleeve.
"I know that no one has gotten over that incident, but there's really no need to drag others into it."
Yang Jia's expression was a mixture of laughter and tears for a moment. She glanced at He Xi, not wanting to pay much attention to the naivety of the person in front of her.
"Now that some people have volunteered to join, I'm happy to see it happen!"
He Xi kept thinking about this sentence until she fell asleep. She still didn't understand why someone would take the initiative to stir up trouble.
She held the phone in her hand, and the moment she turned it on, the white light flashing on the screen made her pupils shrink slightly.
In the few groups she belongs to, the video she just watched not long ago is everywhere.
The constant stream of “I’m so touched” and “So handsome, so beautiful” made her heart ache.
She scrolled to the bottom of the chat app, found the profile picture of one of the people in the video and clicked on it.
There are a few simple strokes on the pure black background, which appear to be messy lines at first glance.
He Xi gently opened the picture and stared at the portrait for a few seconds. Something seemed to flash through his mind, and there was a vague sign of breaking out of the ground.
Suddenly, the phone buzzed and a new message popped up.
"?"
She stared at the question mark on the chat interface, somewhat puzzled, and raised her gaze: "You patted Zhao Lin."
He Xi's face was burning hot, and the momentary embarrassment drove away the sleepiness that had just been brewing.
"Sorry, I bumped into you by accident."
After typing for a long time, she finally sent this message and then quickly exited the chat interface between the two.
But for some reason, the person on the other end suddenly broke her usual silence and her cell phone vibrated twice.
He Xi tried his best to suppress his curiosity, but after a few minutes he somehow reached out and clicked on the unread message with the number 2 in a red circle.
"You always look at me with such vigilant eyes."
She glanced at this sentence and stared at the sketch in the chat box for a long time.
Those were a pair of eyes that she was all too familiar with.
The folds of the double eyelids are narrow and clear, the eye slits are round and the pupils are bright, and the long eyelashes bring out a sense of coldness and vigilance when the eyes are lowered.
He Xi's thoughts stopped for a while. He had no experience in dealing with this kind of situation and had no idea why Zhao Lin suddenly showed weakness.
"Did it scare you?"
The person opposite seemed to be extra patient tonight, and his frantic movements showed none of the cold indifference of the past.
"This painting looks well done."
She was careful not to unravel the mystery, and keenly resisted probing into the sketch and the boy's questioning tone.
"Sister, don't deny that you hate me."
A soft murmur, like an occasional mumbling in sleep.
In the quiet night, He Xi's ears burned intensely. Closing her eyes, the words she had just heard seemed to have a magical power, lingering and replaying in her mind.
"I don't hate you."
She was stunned for a long time, deleted and typed in the chat box for a long time, and finally sent this message.
The other party stopped replying, and she felt a little uneasy. "It's just that I thought you were a little dangerous at first."
"Just at the beginning?"
"fraud."
He Xi stared at the two new lines of text that popped up on his phone. For a moment, he felt embarrassed and guilty, and at a loss whether to laugh or cry.
She didn't understand what had irritated Zhao Lin and why he had to keep harping on this point.
"If you insist on thinking so..."
Her fingers moved quickly on the keyboard, and just as she was hitting the key, her cell phone suddenly rang and a video invitation popped up on the screen.
What the hell?!
He Xi sat up in shock and quickly turned down the volume. The room finally returned to silence. She listened anxiously for a while, her heartbeat, which had been pounding in her throat, gradually returned to normal.
The video invitation kept ringing. She hesitated for a few seconds before hanging up with trembling hands, and finally sat down at the desk before answering the call.
The desk lamp beside the desk cast a corner of warm yellow light. He Xi sat upright in the center of the light, frowning and staring at the dark mobile phone screen opposite him.
"You just hate me, don't deny it."
Just when He Xi thought the other party was playing a prank, a boy's hoarse muttering voice came from the phone.
"I told you I didn't."
"Besides, you have to go to school tomorrow, so don't drink anymore."
He Xi was helpless, but he also knew why this man was going crazy in the middle of the night.
"Well, then, come to the playground tomorrow, okay?"
Although the screen was pitch black, she felt as if she was being stared at by a pair of tiger-like eyes.
The boy's voice was softer than she had ever heard before, and full of temptation.
"Did you call the wrong person?"
No matter how hard He Xi tried, he couldn't reconcile the man in front of him with the usually cold boy.
After the words fell, both of them were speechless for a moment.
Just as she was thinking of what to say, the other party hung up the video without any warning.
