Image 240: Legalist Ma Zhou, Physician Han Chen

Li Gang would spend half an hour each day explaining the scriptures, followed by half an hour of sword practice before letting Qin Mu leave. Li Gang was extremely satisfied with Qin Mu as his disciple. He was often able to apply what he learned to other situations, possessed an exceptional memory, and remembered every word Li Gang had said.

"Haha! Huai Dao! The case is solved!" Cheng Huaimo's raspy voice rang out at the courtyard gate. Qin Mu looked towards the gate. As expected, it was the same old friends who had come, hmm! There were three more young people.

When guests arrived, Qin Mu had no choice but to put down his hammer and step forward to greet them.

"What case has been solved?"

"A rape and murder case!"

"Did you catch him?" Qin Mu knew that the only one that hadn't been broken recently was that one, and he asked on purpose to prevent Cheng Huaimo from getting too smug.

"No, not at all!" Cheng Huaimo's face fell, but he added with a hint of excitement, "However, we have identified the suspect and are currently searching for his whereabouts."

"These two friends must have helped, right? Please have a seat, everyone," Qin Mu said with a smile. Although he was only asking, his tone was very certain.

"Haha! I knew Huai Dao would be able to guess it." Yu Chi Bao Lin laughed triumphantly.

"Naive! You two idiots will never be able to solve the case. How could Brother Qin not guess something so simple?" Xiangli Yanran glanced at the two of them with disdain.

"Police Envoy!" The thin Xi Junmai stepped forward excitedly and clasped his hands in a salute.

"Very good, from now on you will be a constable of the Six Doors." Qin Mu smiled and patted Xi Junmai on the shoulder.

"Yes! Your subordinate greets the patrol officer." Xi Junmai bowed again and then stepped aside.

“Huai Dao, these two are newly recruited talents of the Six Doors. Can you guess which one helped solve the case?” Cheng Huaimo asked again.

"This gentleman has an extraordinary bearing, with firm and bright eyes, and an air of integrity and uprightness. However, his aura is neither Confucian nor Taoist; he is undoubtedly a Legalist."

"As for this gentleman, he possesses the refined air of a Taoist, so he must be a Taoist." Qin Mu said with a smile.

“Ma Zhou, a Legalist! Greetings, Police Commissioner!” Ma Zhou, who was about thirty years old, had slightly protruding cheekbones and was somewhat thin, but his eyes were indeed bright.

"Han Chen of the Daoist sect!" Another man, around twenty years old, was very aloof and simply gave his name.

No one thought Han Chen was aloof; it was mainly because he was extremely handsome, even more so than Yuchi Baolin. When Qin Mu first saw him, he was immediately struck by his striking good looks.

"So, Huai Dao, you suspect that Ma Zhou solved the case?" Cheng Huaimo asked.

"No! I think it was Brother Han who solved the case," Qin Mu said, shaking his head.

"Why? Didn't Ma Zhou admit that he was a Legalist?" Cheng Huaimo asked in astonishment.

"The Legalists are well-versed in the law and advocate that no distinction should be made between relatives and strangers, or between the noble and the lowly, and all should be judged according to the law. That is, to govern the country by law! But this does not mean that all Legalists are good at solving cases."

Taoists are well-versed in the art of medicine, and as the saying goes, medicine and Taoism are inseparable. Many Taoists are also physicians. The key is that Brother Han has a medicinal smell on him, which is left over from years of dealing with medicinal herbs. Even if spiritual energy washes it away, it cannot be removed.

"When it comes to understanding the wounded, doctors are number one, no one would disagree!" Qin Mu analyzed with a smile.

"Ah! Ah! You!" Cheng Huaimo stared at Qin Mu with wide eyes, dumbfounded.

"I guessed right?" Qin Mu said with a smirk.

"That's right! You guessed correctly. How boring!" Cheng Huaimo said, pouting.

On the contrary, Han Chen, standing to the side, was quite interested in looking at Qin Mu. His sword-like eyebrows and bright eyes were quite handsome.

"Please be seated, everyone!" Qin Mu invited again.

“Huai Dao, Han Chen is the first forensic doctor of the Six Doors, and Ma Zhou is the prefect. What do you think?” Princess Changning asked.

"Why ask me about this? You're the Chief Secretary, so your approval is all that's needed," Qin Mu said with a smile.

Ma Zhou glanced at Qin Mu with some curiosity. He didn't know the inside story and didn't understand why Princess Changning, the chief secretary, and the older ones like Cheng Huaimo seemed to be in charge of Qin Mu.

“Well, since you agree, then I’ll report it.” Princess Changning said with a sweet smile.

"Although the Six Doors do not punish criminals for their crimes, the position of Assistant Magistrate is still very necessary. However, the Assistant Magistrate of the Six Doors is only a sixth-rank official, which is a bit of an injustice to Brother Ma!" Qin Mu said, cupping his hands in greeting.

"Officer Qin, you flatter me. Being able to accomplish things, one's rank as an official is not important," Ma Zhou said gratefully, bowing to Qin Mu. Born into a poor family, he had witnessed much injustice and longed to serve his country and eliminate injustice in his hometown, so he came to Chang'an with fervent patriotism. However, after witnessing the geniuses of Chang'an, he realized his own shortcomings and thus calmed down to study diligently.

Having spent five years in Chang'an, he originally intended to take the imperial examination to enter officialdom. The recommendation process for the examination was not a problem for him, as he had made quite a few connections in Chang'an over those five years. Coincidentally, the Six Doors (a government agency) was recruiting people of all kinds, and this kind of government office was the perfect fit for him, so he decided to give it a try.

“Huai Dao, Han Chen is a famous person in Chang’an. Haven’t you heard of him?” Cheng Huaimo asked.

"Brother Han, please forgive me. I have only recently returned to Chang'an and am not familiar with the city," Qin Mu said with a slight apology, bowing slightly.

"Officer Qin, please don't mind. I've heard a lot about you." Han Chen said calmly.

"Just a hollow reputation."

"You! Han Chen is Elder Sun's prized disciple, a master of acupuncture who has saved countless lives! He's so famous, how come you've never heard of him?" Cheng Huaimo asked in surprise.

"Old Master Sun!" Qin Mu said with slight surprise.

"It's the famous Medicine King Sun Simiao, don't tell me you don't know him." Cheng Huaimo said, his eyes wide.

"The name of the Medicine King is known to all! I never expected that Brother Han is actually Elder Sun's disciple. My apologies!" Qin Mu bowed again.

"I am ashamed, I am ashamed! I have not learned even a fraction of your skills, and I am truly ashamed of your teachings. That is why I wish to temporarily borrow the Six Doors to study injuries and illnesses," Han Chen said with a smug look on his face.

"That would be wonderful! I am also quite interested in medicine. I would like to ask Brother Han for guidance another day!"

"No problem!" Han Chen smiled for the first time when talking about medical skills.

"With two of you joining the Six Doors, the Six Doors are like a tiger with wings. Let's drink to a pleasant cooperation in the future!" Qin Mu said with a smile, raising his teacup.

"It's a pleasure to cooperate!" Ma Zhou and the others raised their teacups in response. They found the atmosphere at the Six Doors to be unexpected yet very satisfying.

Ma Zhou and Han Chen were both experienced in dealing with people; they could discern sincerity in a brief encounter. The atmosphere within the Six Doors was harmonious, and the young officials clearly had a good personal relationship.

Soon, Wang Ma and her people prepared the meal and had it brought up. This didn't need any instructions; it was always the same arrangement whenever they arrived.

Cheng Huaimo and the others, of course, didn't stand on ceremony. They started eating as soon as they sat down at the table and kept urging Ma Zhou and Han Chen to eat more.

Ma Zhou and Han Chen ate elegantly, while Xi Junmai ate heartily.
