Standing atop the city wall, looking down, I was still amazed by the defenses of Juyong Pass, even though I was already used to this height. I couldn't understand why the orcs would be so stubborn as to attack with such defenses, and how they were able to take it down.
There was certainly not enough space outside the pass for a million beastmen to deploy. The distance was at least a thousand meters away, and there were indeed densely packed figures, but they were too far away to be clearly seen even from a high vantage point.
"Why would orcs attack such a formidable pass? How did they manage to get up there?" Qin Mu couldn't help but lower his voice and ask curiously.
"Don't underestimate the orcs. They are incredibly agile and fearless. They can even attack a ladder."
"Why is the ladder so long?" Qin Mu asked in surprise.
"Of course, it's not just ladders. The orcs have fought us for countless years, and they have their own ways of attacking tall city walls. The most common and convenient method is rope, a kind of rope woven from special wild grass, about the thickness of a child's wrist. It can be hung on the city wall, allowing them to quickly climb up," Qin Yue explained.
"Ropes?" Qin Mu was even more surprised, not expecting that the equipment for attacking the formidable pass would be so rudimentary.
"Not bad, ropes. Don't underestimate them. These ropes are hard to cut even with a knife. Moreover, when attacking, they are densely packed and thrown up, making them very difficult to deal with."
"Of course, the most important are the elite and skilled orcs. They are the most difficult to deal with when they attack, and that's often when the most casualties are suffered," Qin Yue sighed.
Qin Mu was surprised that the orcs' attack method was so simple, but judging from Qin Yue's explanation, it was obviously quite efficient.
"Of course! The orcs also have some large offensive siege weapons. The huge siege ladders are not only tens of meters high, but also covered with more than ten layers of animal hides, which are difficult to penetrate even by ballistae."
The orcs, hiding behind, could push the wall down and then charge directly onto the top. Their strength was astonishing; they could leap over a distance of ten feet in one bound.
From Qin Yue's words, Qin Mu could easily imagine hordes of humanoid creatures, like wild beasts, howling as they leaped and charged wildly from below the city walls toward the top.
However, surprisingly, werewolves are not like the upright wolves depicted in Western films and television. Although they are indeed tall, around two meters, they still resemble humans overall. If you ignore the facial markings and the distinctly animalistic ears, they are not much different from humans.
A group of men dressed in animal skins, riding huge wolves and wild boars, arrived outside the moat.
"Hey, you on the city wall, call your leader out here!" a man with a fierce look in his eyes shouted at the top of the city wall.
"Ashina, Tai'er, you wolf cub, what are you doing at Juyong Pass? Did you come to deliver a wolf skin to your Grandpa Wang?" Wang Wei stepped forward and sneered.
"You surnamed Wang, this prince isn't going to waste his breath on you. Let the rightful king of the Qin family come out and talk to us!" Ashina and Tai'er shouted, their eyes flashing with even more ferocity as they stared intently at the city wall.
"Pah! You dare to speak to the King? It would be more appropriate for your father to do this." Wang Wei spat out a mouthful of ancient phlegm towards the outside of the city and said arrogantly.
“General Wang, we’re not here to argue. Please invite the King to come out.” A man in a black robe stepped forward, removed his hat to reveal a head of black hair, and said with his head held high.
Although the sound wasn't loud, it traveled clearly to the top of the city wall.
This is a beautiful young woman dressed in blue, with a smile on her face, a very alluring and sweet smile.
When Wang Wei saw the beautiful young woman, his expression immediately turned serious, and he asked in a deep voice, "I didn't expect that the fox clan would also collude with the werewolves. Do you think that this will make us afraid? Bring it on if you dare?"
"General Wang, we have come with sincerity, not for war."
"A million-strong army is at the city gates, and you tell me it's not for the war? Are you trying to threaten me?" Wang Wei sneered.
“General Wang’s opinion is not unreasonable!” A burly man with dreadlocks suddenly raised his head, baring his fangs and grinning maliciously.
"Brothers, someone is trying to threaten me! What do you suggest we do?" Wang Wei grinned and asked loudly.
"war!"
"Fight! Fight!" All the soldiers immediately raised their weapons and roared.
There were at least tens of thousands of people on the city wall, plus those waiting below. The roar of tens of thousands of people not only shook the surrounding area but also made people's blood boil. Qin Mu couldn't help but raise his arms and shout along.
The young woman in blue changed her expression, glared at the man with dreadlocks, and after the angry shouting stopped, she said gently, "General Wang, please don't misunderstand. Juyong Pass is no less dangerous than a dragon's den or a tiger's lair. We wouldn't dare to come here without bringing more people. These people are just for security."
"Speak your mind!" The beautiful woman in green smiled sweetly, and Wang Wei couldn't be too rude in front of everyone.
“General Wang, we are servants who have come to pay our respects to the King and to congratulate Elder Qin on his birthday. We can’t possibly deny you entry!” The beautiful woman in green didn’t care about Wang Wei’s attitude and said with an unchanged smile.
"Hu Meiniang, the dignified patriarch of the Azure Fox Clan, the Qin family does not welcome you to offer birthday greetings. However, since you are a servant, I will naturally not stop you from entering the pass!" Qin Yao appeared and said. His words were watertight, demonstrating the Qin family's stance without being impolite.
As Qin Yao finished speaking, the drawbridge was lowered, but the gate was not opened. After the beautiful woman in green, Hu Meiniang, led three orcs to the foot of the city wall, a huge basket was lowered and pulled up.
As these people climbed onto the city wall, Qin Mu immediately thought of the phrase "Beauty and the Beast." The petite Hu Meiniang was flanked by three burly men, each two meters tall. These men had strange patterns on their faces, like tattoos; while not exactly ugly, their fierce eyes made them very unsettling to behold.
"Greetings, Your Majesty!" It seemed that everything revolved around Hu Meiniang, while the other three remained silent.
"Please!" Qin Yao glanced around, waved his hand, and then turned to leave.
The orcs were not afraid and followed closely behind, descending the city wall together.
"Keep up with me, don't stray too far from your father," Qin Qiong whispered, then followed.
Arriving at the closed-door blue stone hall, they sat down. Of course! Qin Mu stood obediently behind Qin Qiong.
Inside the hall, Qin Yao sat in the main seat, with Qin Qiong as the first person to his left, followed by a middle-aged man with an expressionless face, and Luo Cheng below him.
If Luo Cheng was cold, then this man was stiff. Not only were the muscles in his face stiff, but his gaze was as well. When he scanned Qin Mu, Qin Mu felt a chill run down his spine.
