fireworks
10:00 AM.
Secretary Liu was sitting on the first floor, flipping through the activity booklet in her hand. "President Chen, this afternoon's activity is a group outdoor barbecue and camping trip."
You sat to one side nodding, your voice weak and listless.
"Okay, give me my sunglasses."
Chen Peiyuan left very early in the morning, with tears still in his eyes before he left because he accidentally touched the wound on his chin and it hurt.
You looked away in shame, not daring to look at him, even though medicine had been applied, the area was still bruised and purple.
"President Chen? President Chen?"
When you come to your senses, you see Secretary Li holding sunglasses, calling you several times but you don't respond, and she is looking at you with a puzzled tilt of her head.
You give an awkward laugh, "Haha, well, is it time to leave? Let's go, let's go." You grab your bag and prepare to leave.
Secretary Liu quickly followed. Although she wanted to say there was no need to rush and that there was still plenty of time, she knew that a secretary who embarrassed her boss was not a good employee, so she chose to remain silent.
Fortunately, when they arrived at the venue, they discovered that many things were not yet fully prepared.
Your perfectionist tendencies started to surface, and you dragged Secretary Liu around the entire place.
Once you start working, you become so engrossed that you forget what happened that morning.
"Phew, Mr. Chen, why don't you take a break?" Secretary Liu ran over from a distance.
You unscrew the water bottle that Secretary Liu handed you, took a sip, and were about to say you weren't tired when you saw that Secretary Liu was already covered in sweat, and was wiping his face and neck with a handkerchief every now and then.
"Mr. Chen, Mr. Chen, good afternoon."
"Mr. Chen, we're here."
The employees arrived one after another, and you greeted them with a smile. Seeing that everyone looked in good spirits, you knew they had slept well last night.
The setup is almost complete. Let Secretary Liu rest, and you prepare the charcoal grill.
A young man stepped forward eagerly, wanting to take the things from your hands, saying, "Mr. Chen, let me take this. You can go and rest."
People around you gathered around and urged you to rest.
You had no choice but to put your things down and, surrounded by everyone, walk to a shady spot to sit and rest.
You chase them away and let them play by themselves.
Watching everyone happily skewering and playing around in the distance, you and Secretary Liu exchange a glance and give each other a helpless smile.
"Mr. Chen, if you're tired, take a break. There's no end to the work." Secretary Liu said, enjoying the cool breeze.
You smiled and said, "Some people never get tired. Those who feel tired have already collapsed. Rather than saying they're not tired, it's more accurate to say they're under too much pressure to be tired."
Secretary Liu was taken aback by what you said and turned to look at you in surprise.
You winked at her and said, "I've been through the same thing as everyone else, is that so strange?"
Secretary Liu stood up and accepted the food offered by everyone. "It's not surprising, President Chen. I think I should be happy and thank you for giving me this opportunity to learn from you." She then picked up a skewer and handed it to you, her gaze gentle.
Seeing that you had taken it, she sat back down and looked at the scenery in the distance. "Mr. Chen, do you know that there's an event in this town these days? It's the annual fireworks show."
You really didn't know that? You looked at her in surprise. When you chose this address, you only liked that it had a wide variety of activities and the cost was relatively reasonable. You could say that you could enjoy multiple activities for the price of one.
Seeing that you seemed completely unaware, Secretary Liu smiled and said, "President Chen, perhaps you can go and see it tonight. It's very beautiful, very beautiful." She gave you a meaningful look.
You think, "I probably don't have time to go," and you shrug.
The town came alive at night, with people coming and going on the streets. You were being pulled along by Chen Peiyuan, looking completely bewildered.
Why did you come out? You want to know too.
My gaze slowly shifted back to the back of his head.
Let's go back two hours.
You were in your room, video chatting with your department to confirm the next steps, when you saw Chen Peiyuan run back and go into the bathroom. You don't know what he was doing, but when he came out, he walked up to you awkwardly.
When you saw him, you were clearly taken aback. His hair, which was always styled with hair gel and kept meticulously styled, was now wet and hanging down in front of his forehead. His thick eyebrows had tiny water droplets clinging to his eyelashes. His moist peach blossom eyes were looking at you, as if they held many unspoken words. Beneath his high, straight nose were his red lips, which were constantly moistened with water, and even his chin had a drop of water in it.
A drop of water silently dripped onto his collar. He had changed his clothes, adopting a Japanese style that was popular online. You had an indescribable feeling about him, like a second Chen Peiyuan.
"Lanlan, how do you feel about me?" He seemed a little nervous, his head down, not daring to look at you, his hands constantly gripping his pants.
"It looks good." Although you were a little puzzled as to how he got such clothes, you still gave him confidence, because he really looked good in them.
"Really?"
"real."
"Then Lanlan should change her clothes later too."
"I didn't..."
"I brought it, Lanlan!"
"All right."
Then, for no apparent reason, you ended up on the street with Chen Peiyuan.
If you look at the clothes he's wearing that are the same color scheme as Chen Peiyuan's, it's hard not to suspect that this was premeditated.
"Chen Peiyuan, where are you taking me?" you asked.
Chen Peiyuan was clearing the way when he dodged a young couple who were about to bump into him. "What?" The crowd was noisy, and he didn't hear what you said.
Helpless, you can only lean close to his ear and ask, "Where are you taking me?" Afraid he won't hear you, you raise your voice a little.
Chen Peiyuan casually put his arm around you and placed his hand on your shoulder. You immediately felt awkward, clearly feeling the heat from his shoulder seeping into your skin through the fabric.
"Watch the fireworks, Lanlan, fireworks!" he shouted.
You have no time to respond to him. The crowd is getting more and more crowded, and you have to rely on him to move forward. It feels like being crammed into a giant sardine can, and it's hard not to worry about a stampede.
Finally, you found a spot with a relatively open view, with 20 minutes left before the performance.
Chen Peiyuan let go of you. His first action was to look up and fidget with his messy hair, which had been squeezed out of shape. Soon, his disheveled hair lay obediently on his forehead.
Watching him move, you were relieved that he wasn't wearing hairspray. If he had, and it had gotten crooked, it would have been a major embarrassment for Chen Peiyuan. Just imagining that scene made you burst out laughing.
"Hmm?" Chen Peiyuan looked at you with a puzzled expression when he heard you laugh.
You cough and clench your fist, pretending nothing has happened, "Cough, nothing, nothing, it's just that there are a lot of people today."
Silence is Cambridge tonight.
You watched as Chen Peiyuan opened his mouth several times, as if to say something, but then quietly closed it again.
You're internally screaming and scratching your head. What are you even talking about? It's utter nonsense.
Perhaps the heavens heard your call, for two beautifully dressed girls slowly walked over and stopped in front of Chen Peiyuan.
The girl held her phone hesitantly, and her friend nudged her to speak, "Hey, are you alone?"
Chen Peiyuan shook his head. "No, is there something wrong?"
As you watch from the sidelines, your heart is pounding with anxiety. "No way, no way!"
"Um~ handsome, I want to be friends with you. Can I add you as a contact?" The girl took out her phone and opened the green app amidst her friends' laughter.
He really is trying to pick you up! Didn't he see his fiancée standing right next to him? You felt terrible and turned your face away, not wanting to look. If Chen Peiyuan actually agreed, you would immediately call off the engagement!
"No, I have a girlfriend." Chen Peiyuan refused with a serious expression.
The girl hadn't expected this outcome. With tears in her eyes, she felt embarrassed by being rejected by the person she liked. Her almost-crying state prompted her friend to immediately speak up, "Handsome, your girlfriend isn't here. Add my friend; she really likes you."
Chen Peiyuan's expression was indifferent; his words had already been made very clear.
If you can't stand this, immediately stand in front of him, cross your arms in front of your chest, and glare at these people. "Hey, hey, hey, kids, didn't my fiancé say he had a girlfriend? Why are you still chasing after him? What are you trying to do? You think he's handsome and you want to steal him away from me? And you guys aren't that old, so why are your thoughts so unhealthy?"
You were absolutely furious, and your outburst forced them to take a few steps back.
They looked at each other, and the girl who had spoken earlier stood up again, pointing at you. "You, what makes you think you're his fiancée? He didn't even say so. Are you trying to be a hero and save the damsel in distress?" As they spoke, they seemed to regain their confidence, raising their heads to look at you.
You sneered, "Fine, then take a good look." With that, you pulled a small box out of your pants, opened it, took out the contents, then pulled Chen Peiyuan out from behind, grabbed his hand, and slipped a ring-shaped object onto his middle finger. When you removed it, you saw that it was a ring, sparkling in the moonlight.
"This is my engagement ring. I'm going to propose tonight." You proudly showed it to everyone, holding his hand. You had accidentally found this box when you opened your suitcase at the hotel. Before coming out tonight, you brought it with you on a whim. Unexpectedly, it actually came in handy.
It's finally been delivered to the rightful owner, albeit in this way.
"Lan, Lanlan?" Chen Peiyuan seemed unable to believe it. His eyes widened, and tears quickly streamed down his face, blurring his vision. He couldn't help but wipe them away, afraid that if he hesitated even a second longer, he wouldn't be able to see the ring on his hand.
You didn't expect this man's tears to fall so suddenly. You were careless and forgot to bring tissues, so you had to wipe them with your hands. The result was predictable: in the end, Chen Peiyuan tremblingly pulled a piece of paper from his pants. You were speechless.
Chen Peiyuan held your hand and kept talking, but you couldn't hear him clearly. You were about to look down to listen.
"Bang, bang bang bang."
"Thud~ Bang!"
A loud noise caught your attention. You looked up and saw a magnificent firework burst open and fall into the sky, beautiful and grand.
One after another, fireworks of various shapes burst into bloom in the sky, eliciting gasps of surprise and admiration, and you couldn't help but be mesmerized.
So, you didn't notice at all the face beside you gazing at you with such longing, even though your eyes were blurred with tears and fireworks were in full bloom.
He repeated to himself, "I do, Lanlan."
