remember
That night, after saying goodbye to Mr. Chen, he stepped onto the first step of the second floor and heard someone calling his name from behind. He turned around and saw a man whose face he couldn't see standing in the shadows, looking up at him. The staircase was quiet, and the moonlight shone in through the intercom window, spreading lavishly across the entire second floor, except for the space between him and the man, separated by a patch of moonlight.
He looked at him warily, not speaking first. Following him downstairs in the dead of night, was he friend or foe? But judging from his appearance, someone dressed like that who would do something like stalking someone didn't seem like a friend.
After a long while, the man hidden in the shadows saw that Assistant Li did not speak. Just as Assistant Li could not see him, he could not see Assistant Li's face either. But when he thought about the tight deadline given by his boss, he couldn't help but take half a step forward. This step stepped into the shadows, and what was exposed to the moonlight was the tip of a black leather shoe, which was shiny and had a cold feel to it.
“Mr. Li, there’s no need to be so nervous. I mean no harm. You may not know me, but that’s not important. I’m just here to talk to you about something.” The man said, raising his hands to indicate that he wasn’t a bad person, and deliberately lowering his voice so that no one would know who he was.
"Just stand there and don't move. Who sent you? What do you want with me?" Assistant Li watched as the man took a step forward and then took a step back, maintaining a safe distance from the stranger at all times. He stared intently at the man who spoke, his nerves on edge. At this time, the neighbors were all resting at home, and few people were out and about. If he got into a conflict with the man here, it would be difficult to guarantee that he would be unharmed.
Upon seeing this, the man immediately stopped and made an OK sign with both hands. After calming down and seeing that Mr. Li seemed to be no longer backing down, the man took out a card from his pocket and placed it on the steps not far from him, as requested.
"Okay, okay, Mr. Li, don't be nervous. I'll just stand here and not move. This is my boss's business card. My boss sent me here to make friends with you and casually ask if you'd be interested in changing jobs. We can offer you this amount, and you'll even be a partner."
When the man talked about the salary, he held up the number 'six' with one hand. In the darkness, he chuckled twice, his tone smug and arrogant, certain that Mr. Li would not refuse the conditions offered by his boss. If it were him, he would definitely agree without hesitation.
He's a fool if he can't see through such obvious intentions as "boss," "making friends," "changing jobs," or "partner."
"So your boss wants me to go and work for him?"
"I think your boss has the wrong person. I'm just a lowly president's assistant. I don't have any special privileges and I don't know anything about the company's secrets. I won't leave, and I won't befriend your boss. Please go back and tell your boss not to waste his time on me."
Assistant Li's expression remained hidden in the darkness. The moonlight moved quietly upwards, slowly revealing his entire body and his expression. He seemed a little uncomfortable with such bright light. After speaking, he lowered his eyes and prepared to leave.
"No, no, no, Mr. Li, our company is really not bad. I guarantee you'll be satisfied after you see it. Why don't you reconsider?" The man strongly recommended it, as he had to complete the task assigned by his boss, and his smile grew wider and wider.
Assistant Li had been busy all day, just wanting to get rid of him as soon as possible.
"No need to say anything more. It's getting late, so please leave now."
"You brat, you really are asking for trouble."
Seeing his resolute attitude, and remembering his boss's words that if he failed, he should try to extract some secrets, since he worked for that woman and couldn't possibly know nothing, the man hardened his heart. He was originally from a gang of thugs, and the only thing he knew how to do was fight. He had just been pretending to be respectable by repeating what his boss had said. Now that he saw him being so disrespectful, he was furious and decided to teach him a lesson.
The man suddenly rushed up the steps, taking two steps at a time to reach Assistant Li. In that instant, Assistant Li saw him clearly: a buzz cut, a square round face, and a pair of triangular eyes that looked sinister, filled with ferocity and bloodlust. Most terrifying was a lightning-like scar running diagonally across his forehead and downturned eyebrow. He was wearing a suit that seemed a little too small for him, stretching his body as he moved, giving him a somewhat comical and peculiar appearance.
He rushed over quickly, his face contorted with rage, and raised his fist, throwing a punch at Assistant Li. Under the moonlight, the scar on his forehead looked even more terrifying.
Assistant Li had been on guard. When the man suddenly attacked, he immediately dodged to the side, avoiding the man's punch. His fist slammed into the wall with a muffled thud, and the force of the punch, accompanied by the sound of wind, was enough to show how powerful it was. However, the man did not utter a sound.
Seeing that his first punch missed, the man threw another punch at him. Assistant Li immediately bent down to dodge, and saw a large gap between the man's back and the stairs. Before the man could react, he rushed over and then ran downstairs.
"Stop right there, you brat."
Seeing this, the man also chased after them, letting out a roar.
"You brat, you brat!" Assistant Li retorted as he ran. He was just a lowly president's assistant, never expecting to face the risk of being silenced. Besides, this was a society governed by law. What he had just said seemed like ordinary rhetoric. Who would have thought that if he didn't switch jobs, he would be beaten up? Was that boss some kind of gangster? If he really went with him, he might lose his life. It was so dangerous that he couldn't go.
In the darkness, two figures moved swiftly, occasionally flashing in the moonlight. The figure in front scrambled downhill, dodging a punch that could strike at any moment from behind. Strangely, despite the commotion they made, no one came out to check. The entire apartment building was deathly silent. Normally, Assistant Chen could faintly hear the television and his family arguing through the crack in the door, but today, all that was gone. Only the moonlight continued to move slowly.
The first floor was completely dark. Assistant Li was covered in sweat, large beads of sweat hanging from his forehead. He didn't have time to wipe them away, and the sweat blurred his vision. He struggled to see the way in the dark by adjusting his glasses. His poor eyesight and lack of stamina caused him to slow down and he was quickly overtaken. Before he knew it, someone behind him shouted and a gust of wind rushed by. He instinctively dodged, but a fist grazed his cheek, and he heard a "thud" as something fell to the ground.
Oh no, his glasses were knocked off. His vision went black, his legs went weak, and he fumbled around with his hands until he grabbed a cylindrical object. He gripped it tightly to steady himself. Assistant Li clung to the object, panting heavily. He had been running so fast that he was out of breath. He didn't care about being done for; he was exhausted.
Seeing him suddenly stop, the man halted his charge and yelled, "You brat, where do you think you're going? Take this punch and I'll show you what I'm made of!"
Assistant Li could only watch helplessly as his fist clenched.
"Wait, Xiao Li, I have a question." You sat upright in the sofa chair, raising your hand obediently like a curious child to look at Assistant Li, who was reminiscing on the hospital bed.
Assistant Li leaned against the pillow, helplessly watching President Chen nod, and had no choice but to pause his recollection to listen to President Chen's doubts.
"Why do you know his inner thoughts? Isn't this your memory?" She looked at Assistant Li with a puzzled expression.
Assistant Li raised his hand, touched the back of his head which was bandaged, and grinned foolishly. "I just imagined it. I think that's what he would think."
You nodded, seemingly lost in thought.
"Go on, why did you stop talking?"
Assistant Li took a deep breath. He really felt that CEO Chen was being unreasonable. She was the one who wanted to pause, she was the one who wanted to ask questions, and in the end, she was the one who complained that he spoke too slowly. This kind of boss was really hard to serve. For a moment, he didn't know which boss he would be worse off with, but he was the worst off. The little chibi version of Assistant Chen squatted down and hugged himself with heartache.
"Quick, quick, Assistant Li, did the punch actually hit you? Why did you stop at the exciting part?"
"That's all because of you!" Assistant Li glared at President Chen secretly, then quickly remembered before she noticed.
Did that fist actually hit him? That night was so dark, darker than any night he'd ever seen before. It was so dark he couldn't see where people were, but he could clearly see the shape of the fist coming straight for his face. The speed seemed to slow down, and with each heartbeat, thud, thud, thud. He had never imagined death could be so close.
Suddenly, his eyes widened. One hand, then another, intercepted it halfway. Just a hair's breadth away, that huge fist was about to press down on his nose. Then, he heard the man scream, followed by a man being slammed heavily to the ground, dust billowing everywhere.
"Cough, cough, cough cough."
He was forced to inhale the rising dust, and couldn't help but cough. He raised his hand and waved away the smog-like dust in front of his eyes. He seemed to have forgotten something. Then his body felt light, and he couldn't help but fall backward. He finally remembered what he had forgotten. His hands were just holding onto the railing, but it was too late. He then collapsed onto the ground floor with a thud.
"Aaaaaaah, help!"
He forgot that he had been holding onto the railing. When he let go, he lost his balance and fell uncontrollably, rolling into a ball before landing on the ground. In that instant, pain spread throughout his body, and he couldn't help but scream.
The mysterious man grabbed the bad guy's hand and threw him over his shoulder, putting him to the ground. Then he used his leg to tightly choke the bad guy's throat and twisted his arm to make him unable to move. Just as he finished tying the bad guy's hands, he heard a "bang" behind him. Startled, he immediately turned around and saw Assistant Li lying on the ground in a strange position, crying out in pain.
The mysterious man fell silent.
He heard the mysterious man take out his phone and dial 110 and 120, then come downstairs and stand in front of him. With his last bit of strength, he turned his head and saw that it was President Chen, Chen Peiyuan. He saw Chen Peiyuan speaking with his mouth opening and closing.
"With your strength, how can you talk about protecting Lanlan? You're too weak. You need someone else to protect you now."
No, no, he's not weak at all.
He wanted to argue back, but his head was throbbing so badly that his vision went completely black, and he lost consciousness. When he regained his memory, he was already in the hospital when he opened his eyes.
