Chapter 31 Flashlight

Chapter 31 Flashlight

Jiang Ling felt completely drained and had no energy left to cook noodles.

"I still have plenty of instant noodles, but I'm not feeling well today, so I can't let you eat here."

Zhao Jingxing immediately replied, "Miss Jiang is not feeling well, how could we dare to trouble her? We'll take her back and cook her ourselves."

Jiang Ling walked to the shelf, grabbed a plastic bag, and took some of the various flavors of instant noodles.

It filled a whole bag.

He took another bag and filled it with all the cookies and pastries on the shelf.

I handed them two large bags full.

They've already eaten the bread, so there's no need to explain further.

"There are noodles and a seasoning packet in here. Boil the water, put in the noodles and seasoning, and cook for about the time it takes for an incense stick to burn. Adjust the cooking time according to your personal taste. If you like softer noodles, cook them a little longer. If you have the option, you can pick some wild vegetables and add them to the pot; it will taste even better."

Cooking instant noodles is very simple; there's no doubt that someone can learn it.

If you can't learn this, then just try to learn it by hand!

Cheng Fang read it aloud several times and memorized it.

He then took out a small gold ingot from his pocket and placed it on the counter.

This was prepared before he came.

Under the light, the gold ingot gleamed with a warm luster.

Jiang Ling was slightly taken aback.

I knew they were generous, but I didn't expect them to be this generous!

At the current gold price, this would cost tens of thousands.

Since the young marquis was rich, Jiang Ling didn't stand on ceremony with him.

"Also, Miss Jiang, could you give me a few more bottles of that 'happy water' I drank this morning? Hehe."

Considering the large number of people in the military camp, Jiang Ling gave him four large bottles of soda, which were even frozen.

Cheng Fang was carrying a can of soda in one hand and instant noodles in the other. He felt a little guilty.

"Isn't this too much, Miss Jiang? We're not far from here, we can come back anytime we want to eat."

Jiang Ling coughed lightly twice. "Not much, because I might not be around for the next few days."

She doesn't know how long she'll sleep.

Cheng Fang and Zhao Jingxing exchanged a glance, and then wisely refrained from asking any further questions.

Cheng Fang had been to this shop no less than ten times, but he had only seen it open three times, including this time.

He knew all too well that this shop held many secrets.

But since Miss Jiang was unwilling to talk about it, they didn't press her for details...

It was completely dark outside. The roads here were mostly dirt roads with no streetlights, making it extremely dangerous to ride a horse at night.

Jiang Ling went into the warehouse and found two flashlights.

They each received one.

"Take this with you on the road."

Cheng Fang looked at the black, cylindrical object in his hand with a puzzled expression. "What is this?"

"This is called... a light lamp. It's used for lighting when it gets dark."

"No need, Miss Jiang, we have oil lamps on our horses."

Jiang Ling turned to look at the oil lamp hanging next to the saddle. The light was so dim that it could only indicate the position of the horses. It couldn't even illuminate the potholes under the horses' hooves, let alone light the way ahead.

It simply tells others that there is a living thing moving around here.

“What good is the light from your oil lamps? Tie this to your saddle or hold it in your hand, and you can see the way forward clearly and avoid any danger in time.”

Cheng Fang wanted to refuse again, but Jiang Ling found the flashlight switch and gently pushed it.

Suddenly! A bright beam of light shot out from the front of the cylinder, piercing straight through the darkness outside the door.

"Whoa—!" Cheng Fang jumped back in surprise! His eyes widened in shock.

"Who put the sun inside?!"

Zhao Jingxing was the first to react and walked towards Jiang Ling. Staring at the pillar of light, his eyes were filled with surprise and admiration:

"Is this the light that Miss Jiang mentioned? It's amazing! How did you do that? The beam of light can even clearly see the little grass swaying in the wind outside the door!"

He immediately thought of many uses, such as night marches and reconnaissance.

Cheng Fang also realized what was happening and walked closer to the pillar of light.

Realizing that his earlier suggestion that someone had put the sun inside was a bit absurd, he immediately corrected himself:

"Is it filled with candles? Or is it filled with a luminous pearl?"

Jiang Ling was very dizzy and didn't want to explain further.

She turned off the flashlight and handed it to them.

"Try it, push that red button."

Cheng Fang and Zhao Jingxing carefully felt around and finally found a small red square on the cold metal cylinder.

The two looked at each other, a mixture of nervousness and curiosity in their eyes, and then pushed forward with their thumbs!

A soft "click" sounded.

Two beams of light appeared immediately!

This time they stood closer to the door, and the beam of light shone farther, illuminating a larger area, making even the pebbles on the roadside clearly visible.

Cheng Fang didn't find the right direction at first, and the beam of light in his hand shone directly on his spirited horse.

Startled, he quickly turned away, afraid that the beam of light would burn his snow-covered body!

Jiang Ling said softly, "It's alright, it's just a ray of light, it has no heat. It won't burn anyone or hurt the horse."

Cheng Fang then mustered up his courage and waved his hand in the middle of the beam of light.

"It really is! How amazing!"

Like a child who has received a new and exciting toy, he held a flashlight and shone it around, illuminating every dark corner.

Zhao Jingxing was a year older than Cheng Da, and was more composed and adept at concealing his emotions. Nevertheless, he couldn't hide his joy when he encountered something like this.

"Thank you for the treasure, Miss Jiang. We hope you will open your shop soon so we can return it to you as soon as possible!"

"No need to return it, consider it a gift. But this light is not eternal. If it ever goes out, you can take it back to me."

This flashlight uses batteries; you can take it back, replace the batteries, and it will still work.

She didn't mention the battery; otherwise, I don't know how long it would have taken to explain.

The sound of horses' hooves faded into the distance, stepping on those two strange yet steady beams of light, gradually disappearing into the darkness in the distance.

Jiang Ling closed the door, finally breathed a sigh of relief, and went upstairs.

————

With this light, even the instant noodles in Cheng Fang's hand didn't taste so good anymore.

I didn't even realize I was hungry.

He didn't urge on his horse, but just walked slowly, holding a flashlight in his hand, curiously shining it around.

The pebbles underfoot, the birds in the trees, the spider webs in the grass, the frogs startled and jumping away...

Everything amazed him.

Walking at night can be so much fun!

The oil lamps they hung on their saddles were made of glass. Glass was a rare commodity in those days, and there was a saying that an inch of glass was worth an inch of gold.

Even in military camps, you can't find many lamps like these, but compared to them, they suddenly seem nothing.

Zhao Jingxing also liked the flashlight, but he wasn't as impetuous as Zhao Jingxing. He only curiously shone it around at first, but then he held it steadily in his hand, illuminating the way forward.

What should have been a half-hour journey took a full hour, only after Zhao Jingxing urged them on repeatedly.
