Chapter 99: The Cellphone Ringtone Was Discovered?
Jiang Ling told Xiao Ran to keep an eye on the shop.
So they went out with the joy of exploration.
She first strolled around the grocery store at a leisurely pace.
Jishui Village was quiet in the morning, with most households keeping their doors and windows closed, presumably still busy with the final cleanup work of the autumn harvest in the fields.
Following the route that the villagers had mentioned in their casual conversations, she walked along the dirt road, taking in the village she had been visiting for some time but had never really looked at closely.
Most of the houses are low, with earthen walls and gray tiles, and occasionally a few neater blue brick houses.
The courtyards are not large, and persimmon or jujube trees with fruit hanging from the walls add a touch of life to the simple village.
As she walked, she headed towards the farmland outside the village.
The closer you get to the fields, the clearer the voices become.
In the vast fields, most of the golden rice has been harvested and bundled into short, stout haystacks standing in the ground.
Many households are still busy bending over, picking up scattered ears of rice, or turning over the soil to prepare for planting vegetables for the winter.
Sunlight shines on the fields, illuminating the hardworking farmers.
Jiang Ling saw several familiar faces.
They live in family units, with adults bending over and sweating, while the children follow behind, doing light chores that they can manage, such as gathering scattered ears of rice or carrying earthenware pots to deliver water to the adults.
No one was idle; even the youngest children sat in baskets by the edge of the field, playing with the mud on their own.
Several children playing by the edge of the field greeted her as she approached.
They were still eating oxalis they had just picked from the field.
A little girl of five or six years old presented Jiang Ling with a small handful of fresh wood sorrel and said in a sweet, soft voice.
"Sister Jiang, here you go."
Jiang Ling also ate wood sorrel when she was a child. She mainly ate its roots and stems, which were sweet and sour.
Thank you.
Jiang Ling pulled one out of that small handful and put it in her mouth, chewing it slowly.
The sour juice immediately made her mouth water, and she couldn't help but squint her eyes.
Jiang Ling didn't disturb them. She watched from afar for a while, then quietly left.
She then strolled to the small river at the east end of the village.
Just as Xiaoran said, the scenery here is indeed beautiful.
The river is crystal clear, flowing gently, with lush trees lining both banks and rolling green hills in the distance, like a tranquil ink painting.
The air was filled with the fresh scent of moisture and grass, and it was much cooler than the area in front of the shop.
Jiang Ling walked a few steps along the riverbank and suddenly saw a fist-sized crab leisurely crawling sideways in the clear water.
This is practically lunch delivered to my door!
She became very interested and wanted to relive the fun of catching crabs in the river when she was a child.
The little crab was very clever; as soon as she squatted down, it darted into the crevice in the rock.
Jiang Ling was unwilling to give up, so she took a step forward and tried to move the not-too-big-but-not-too-small stone.
But caught off guard, he didn't notice the soft mud on the riverbank beneath his feet—
One foot sank firmly into the mud, which instantly covered her ankle.
"Ouch!" Jiang Ling exclaimed softly, quickly pulling her foot out.
Her modern sneakers and half of her trousers were covered in yellow mud, making her look quite disheveled.
We could only watch helplessly as the crab crawled out of the crack in the rock and swam downstream along the river.
Walking back like this wouldn't look right, so she simply took off her shoes and socks, rolled up her trouser legs, and walked barefoot to the clear, shallow water of the riverbank, where she sat down to wash the mud off her feet and shoes.
The cool river water washed over my feet; it felt different from tap water, very refreshing.
Just as she was concentrating on washing, the sound of carriages and horses approached from afar.
A rather luxuriously decorated carriage, escorted by several attendants, stopped downstream.
It seems they had been traveling for a long time and stopped to let the horses drink and rest.
The carriage came to a stop, and the curtain was lifted by a hand with distinct knuckles. A young gentleman dressed in a brocade robe and wearing a jade crown stepped down.
He had a handsome face and a noble air. His gaze casually swept across the river, but he suddenly stopped when he saw the barefoot girl washing clothes by the river.
The girl was facing him sideways, her figure slender, with half of her calves and ankles exposed.
She seemed to have encountered a small problem, her brows slightly furrowed as she focused intently on dealing with the mud in her hands. Her natural yet slightly annoyed expression blended strangely with the rural streamside background, creating a breathtaking beauty.
The young master's heart raced, and he felt a sensation he had never experienced before. It was as if the world consisted only of the two of them.
The young man came to his senses and was about to step forward to strike up a conversation.
At that very moment—
Suddenly, an extremely beautiful and ethereal melody, like heavenly music, rang out!
The sound was pure and clear, and the melody was melodious and graceful. It was a beautiful sound that this young master had never heard before, as if it did not belong to this world!
Not only the young man in brocade robes, but even his entourage who were watering their horses were all stunned. Their eyes widened, their ears perked up, and they stared blankly in the direction of the music—
The voice was coming from the girl by the river!
Jiang Ling was also startled by the sudden ringing of the bell!
She then remembered that she had just ordered takeout and, worried that the delivery person wouldn't be able to find her, she casually put her phone in her pocket.
I never expected it to ring at this moment!
The delivery guy must be almost there!
Seeing this, she knew she couldn't linger any longer. She hurriedly put on her still-wet shoes.
Just as she was about to reach out to press it, she looked up and saw a strange young man standing in front of her, staring at her blankly.
The young man's face was filled with disbelief and shock.
Jiang Ling guessed that he had heard the phone ringing. She hurriedly pressed the reject button in her pocket, and the ringing stopped abruptly.
Suddenly, silence returned, leaving only the sound of flowing water.
The young man in brocade robes snapped back to his senses, his burning gaze immediately locking onto Jiang Ling.
The bell was coming from her... Could it be... could it be that the beautiful sound wasn't a musical instrument, but rather the girl in front of me... singing?
Looking at the girl before me, I saw that she had fair skin, a beautiful face, and a graceful posture. Her hair was gently swaying in the breeze, and she exuded an air of neither arrogance nor servility. She seemed to radiate a halo in the sunlight.
This is no ordinary country woman.
Could it be a spirit born from the beautiful mountains and rivers, or a fairy who accidentally descended to the mortal world?
Jiang Ling was inwardly groaning. How could so many people suddenly appear in this desolate wilderness? And to be caught red-handed like that!
Looking into his eyes, which were filled with surprise, doubt, inquiry, and amazement, she realized that he had clearly misunderstood.
"Miss..." The young master composed himself, trying his best to restore his gentle voice, but he still couldn't hide a trace of excitement.
"That melody just now... was so pure and ethereal, like celestial music. Was it... was it sung by the young lady?"
Jiang Ling didn't know how to explain it, as she had assumed that no one would hear her phone ringing in this desolate place.
Deny it? But they've already caught up with you.
Admit it? How is she supposed to explain the concept of a cell phone ringtone to people from ancient times?
