Chapter 102 Mianmian Set a Perfect Trap
Xie Mianmian withdrew her gaze and continued to linger on the railing, admiring the afterglow of the setting sun gradually disappearing on the horizon.
A sea breeze blew in gusts, one of which seemed to carry a strange, fishy smell. Xie Mianmian turned her head warily and sniffed hard in the direction from which the smell was coming.
There were quite a few people moving around on the deck; they were probably sailors and various managers on the ship.
Xie Mianmian wrinkled her nose. "Granny, can you smell that strange fishy smell?"
The old woman said, "This is the seaside. The smell of fish must be from the kitchen cleaning fish. Miss, we should go back for dinner."
Xie Mianmian obediently followed the nanny away, but she still kept looking back, as if trying to find the suspicious person.
It wasn't the smell of fish, but the bloody smell of the Rejuvenating Pill. Wasn't that evil monk captured? How could anyone still be taking the Rejuvenating Pill? The child wondered.
The group arrived at the dining area, and Wen Shuwan served Xie Mianmian a bowl of seafood porridge made with the seafood they had just dug up while beachcombing.
Xie Mianmian picked up a spoon and scooped up a thin layer of porridge. The rice grains were round and plump, and they had bloomed after being cooked over a low flame. The porridge was cooked just right, smooth and thick.
Xie Mianmian took a breath, puffed out her round cheeks, and "whoosh~", the porridge on the spoon was blown into ripples, like a spoonful of viscous seawater.
The child ate it with a gusto, her eyes immediately lighting up as she tasted a flavor she had never experienced before.
"This is delicious! Mianmian, you can stay here with your father from now on and not go back, okay?" You can eat delicious porridge every meal, hehe.
Xie Mingyi slowly swallowed the porridge in her mouth, "Brother, Xie Huaijin, giant python, black wolf..."
With each name she read, Xie Mianmian's smug smile dimmed a little, until Xie Mingyi read the last name, "Seventh Prince."
With a "clatter," the spoon hit the porcelain bowl. Xie Mianmian panicked and looked pleadingly at her second sister, "Go back, go back, Mianmian wants to go back to the capital!"
Xie Mingyi chuckled and pinched Xie Mianmian's chubby cheeks. She was such a little kid, yet she could handle her so easily. She had finally grown up and was no longer the pitiful adult who would be easily provoked by a child.
At this moment, Vice Envoy Zhang arrived and whispered a few words in Xie's father's ear.
Father Xie's expression immediately turned serious. He said to everyone, "After you go back to your room, do not come out. I will send people to guard you. If there is anything important, just tell them."
After saying that, he left in a hurry.
After finishing their meal, the three returned to their room.
After washing up, Xie Mianmian, smelling wonderful, lay down on the soft bed, the little girl bouncing gently.
Hmm... Who should I sleep in tonight? It's so hard to choose. Xie Mianmian climbed onto another bed, tucked herself into the thin, soft blanket, and waited happily for Wen Shuwan to come back from washing up.
She covered her mouth and chuckled, anticipating the surprised look on her sister-in-law's face when she returned, lifted the blanket, and saw a child inside.
Xie Mianmian mimicked Xie Linyuan's icy expression, repeatedly telling herself, "Sister-in-law, don't be afraid, I'm your brother."
With her fair face exposed, the cool breeze blowing in from the window instantly cleared Xie Mianmian's mind.
She sat up abruptly, realizing something was wrong. She had important things to do tonight and couldn't afford to indulge in pleasure.
Xie Mianmian walked back to Xie Mingyi's bed and lay down.
A wave of drowsiness washed over me, and my eyelids gradually drooped. Anyway, it wasn't time yet, so I decided to take a nap first.
But now that Little Bucket is gone, there's no one to wake me up. What happened to Little Bucket? Why isn't it awake yet...?
As she pondered, Xie Mianmian drifted into a deep sleep.
After an unknown amount of time, Xie Mianmian suddenly opened her eyes and sat up abruptly.
The candles had been extinguished, and the room was dark except for the dim moonlight filtering through the narrow window. The boat rocked gently in the sea, and Xie Mingyi and Wen Shuwan were fast asleep.
Xie Mianmian tiptoed out of bed, put on her shoes, and didn't make a sound the whole time. She walked to the door and gently opened it a crack.
There seemed to be a figure standing outside, probably someone sent by her father to protect them. Xie Mianmian thought to herself, "Oh no, how am I going to get out?"
Suddenly, the people outside the door heard a commotion coming from outside the cabin, as if a fight had broken out on the deck.
He was still hesitating, but when he heard a familiar scream, he immediately rushed out.
Huh? Xie Mianmian noticed that the person had left. She cautiously peeked out and saw how noisy it was outside. Were her father and the others chatting and drinking?
"Won't this loud noise wake up my second sister and the others?" Xie Mianmian quickly closed the door. Instantly, the room fell silent, and not a single sound could be heard.
How amazing! Xie Mianmian opened the door a crack and peeked out again. The noisy sounds were clearly echoing in the corridor, but they disappeared as soon as the door was closed.
Xie Mianmian squeezed through the narrow crack in the door, silently closed it, and crawled sideways along the wall like a crab.
Darkness is her best camouflage; she can't let her father's men catch her, Mianmian still has important things to do.
Xie Mianmian moved slowly, without encountering anyone along the way. Suddenly, she faintly smelled that evil, fishy odor, which frightened her so much that she quickly hid behind a pile of sacks.
The child, confident that she was hidden in the shadows and unseen, peeked out and saw someone approaching. The person was furtive, looking around suspiciously.
Xie Mianmian ducked down, holding her breath. It was too dark for her to see the person's face. The next moment, the person slipped into her father's room.
She had been inside during the day and knew it was very large, filled with all sorts of books and miscellaneous items; her father usually ate, slept, and worked there.
That bad guy is definitely going to do something bad when he goes in. Mianmian can't let him succeed. What should she do? She was so anxious that she scratched her head and cheeks.
While rummaging around, Xie Mianmian accidentally touched a piece of hemp rope. A brilliant idea flashed in her mind: "Ah, I've got it! Catch the chicken!"
Under the pale moonlight, Xie Mianmian kept recalling the trap the Seventh Prince used to catch thieves during the last spring hunt. She kept testing the rope on the ground with her little hands, and finally, the child perfectly replicated it.
"As expected of me," Xie Mianmian sighed. There aren't many children as cute and smart as herself.
Holding a large bundle of hemp rope in her arms, Xie Mianmian took a deep breath, pushed open her father's door a crack, and silently went inside.
It was very dark inside, so dark you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. Only the tinderbox held in the man's hand emitted a small, dim yellow candlelight.
Xie Mianmian half-squatted down, bypassed the candlelight, and slowly walked to the other side. She touched the edge of the bed and then carefully set up a trap on the ground in front of the bed.
Oh right, Xie Mianmian remembered, she couldn't forget the most important thing—the bait!
Xie Mianmian reached out onto the bed and, unsurprisingly, found a small booklet under the pillow.
People always like to stuff things under their pillows. Xie Mianmian had all sorts of trinkets under her pillow, the wolf cub hid a big bone, and He Chuan hid a silver ingot.
Xie Mianmian placed the booklet in the middle of the bed, directly below the trap—it was perfect. The child held the other end of the rope and looped it around a foot of the bed.
Then Xie Mianmian crawled under the bed, lay face down, and watched the dim candlelight move around through the gap between the bed and the floor.
Slowly, the candlelight finally moved toward the bed.
Xie Mianmian gripped the rope and saw the man standing not far away. She swallowed hard. Why wasn't he coming over? Could it be... that he had discovered the trap on the ground?!
