Chapter 62 Silly Roe Deer

After picking up the rabbit, An Ning and An Dashan continued to move forward. The further they went, the more difficult it became. Fortunately, An Ning was wearing sheepskin boots, otherwise his shoes would have been soaked.

An Dashan and An Ning stopped going forward when they reached the place where they first encountered Ganoderma lucidum. It was winter now, and going into the mountains was extremely dangerous.

An Dashan asked An Ning to stay where he was, while he walked around. An Ning was already exhausted, and when he saw An Dashan leaving, he sat down on a tree stump. He rubbed his sore legs, took out a cup of hot water from the space and drank it. The hot water was boiled in the morning, and An Ning was afraid of being thirsty in the mountains, so he filled the thermos in the space. An Ning didn't dare to give An Dashan a drink, for fear of arousing suspicion, so he could only let his father down.

An Ning was just sitting there bored when she saw An Dashan carrying a fairly large brown-fur prey. An Ning quickly stood up and shouted, "Dad, what prey did you catch?"

An Dashan smiled heartily and said, "It's a silly roe deer."

An Ning had heard of the silly roe deer, but in his previous life, this thing was only found in the Northeast. While he was talking, An Dashan had already walked over. An Ning touched the silly roe deer and found it to be quite fat. So he said, "Dad, this roe deer is quite fat, why don't we go back and have a hot pot!"

An Dashan recalled the taste of the hot pot, nodded, and said, "Okay, I didn't feel it until you said it, but now I'm a little greedy."

An Dashan touched his increasingly round belly and thought that he would need to exercise more after eating the hotpot.

After a great harvest today, An Dashan took An Ning down the mountain.

When they got home, Gensheng's mother had just finished lunch and was about to go home. An Ning said to Gensheng's mother, "Aunt, you don't have to come over to cook dinner. I'll cook tonight. Don't worry, I'll still pay you."

Gensheng's mother smiled and nodded, saying, "Okay, I'll come over to cook tomorrow morning."

After seeing Gensheng's mother off, An Dashan and An Ning washed their hands, and the family of three sat down at the table and started to eat.

Gao was very happy to know that the father and daughter had shot a roe deer. She said, "But I haven't eaten roe deer meat for a long time. I ate it last time when I was in confinement. Now I think about it and I'm still craving for it."

When An Ning was born, Gao had no milk and cried with hunger. Seeing this, An Dashan felt sorry for his daughter, so he went into the mountains. He was lucky enough to hunt a roe deer, but he did not sell it and kept all of it for Gao to eat.

Gao had been eating the roe deer for almost a month and had enough milk. Fortunately, An Ning's birthday was on the 22nd day of the twelfth lunar month, otherwise the roe deer would have gone bad in a month.

Gao said, "Ningning's birthday is coming soon. What birthday gift do you want? How about I make you a new set of clothes?"

An Ning smiled and said, "Mom, I already have enough clothes, so you don't need to make me any more clothes. Besides, it's my birthday and your hard life, so I should honor you."

Gao smiled when she heard this and said, "Okay, Ningning has grown up and knows how to love her mother."

The family had their meal happily together. After the meal, An Ning cleaned up the dishes and went back to her room to rest for a while. She got up around 3 p.m. to cook dinner.

When An Ning came to the kitchen, An Dashan had already skinned the roe deer and was now cutting the meat into slices.

After greeting An Ning and An Dashan, they began to prepare the soup base and dipping sauce. There were plenty of bones at home, so An Ning picked out a few large bones, cut them in half, and boiled a pot of bone soup.

After boiling the bone soup, An Ning started to make sesame paste. These sesame seeds cost a lot of money. An Ning first washed the sesame seeds, then brushed the pot clean, put the washed sesame seeds into the pot, first fried the sesame seeds on medium heat until dry, then turned to low heat, after the sesame seeds were fried, they were served and cooled, put the cooled sesame seeds into the stone mill, added appropriate amount of salt and sesame oil and began to grind. An Ning likes to eat something with a delicate taste, so it takes a little longer to grind. A lot of sesame paste was made, so next time you eat hot pot, you don't have to make it fresh. Save the sesame paste for tonight, and put the rest in a ceramic jar and seal it.

An Ning started to fry the mushroom sauce again. First, she took out some of the soaked mushrooms and cut them into dices. She also cut the pork tenderloin into dices. She put the mushroom and pork dices into a large bowl. Then she took out another bowl, put a few spoonfuls of soybean paste in it, added some water and stirred it evenly. She put some oil in the pot, put the diced meat and mushrooms in when the oil was hot, and after they were cooked, she poured the prepared soybean paste into the pot and stir-fried it evenly.

After these two sauces were prepared, plus the chives flowers made some time ago, they were almost done. An Ning used these sauces to make a non-spicy dipping sauce, and used chili oil to make a slightly spicy dipping sauce.

After preparing the dipping sauce, An Ning went to wash the vegetables. Since it was winter, there were not many green vegetables, so she only took a large cabbage, cut off the leaves, washed it and put it on the plate. The bamboo shoots and mushrooms were soaked in advance, so she took them all out and put them in a large bowl.

An Ning took out some bean sprouts that had grown a few days ago, washed them, and put them in a large bowl.

At this time, An Dashan's meat slices were already cut. An Ning loaded the red clay stove with charcoal and placed it on the table. He then put the casserole with bone soup on top and lit the charcoal fire. An Dashan also placed the cut meat slices and washed hot pot vegetables on the table. After everything was ready, An Ning went to call Gao out for dinner.

When the family sat around the table, the thick, white, fragrant bone soup in the casserole had already begun to boil. An Ning first threw in a handful of soaked mushrooms, which made the soup base particularly delicious.

When the bone soup in the casserole began to boil again, An Dashan couldn't wait to put the roe deer meat slices in. After it was cooked, he first picked some for Gao Shi, then some for An Ning, and finally some for himself. He dipped it in the sauce and put it in his mouth, squinting his eyes with enjoyment.

An Ning had never eaten roe deer meat before, so she put the meat that An Dashan picked for her into her mouth. Unexpectedly, the roe deer meat was so tender and fresh, even better than the wild goat meat she had eaten last time, so she started to eat it with chopsticks.

Gao saw the father and daughter eating with relish, so she started eating too. Who knew that the roe deer meat tasted much better when eaten hot pot than when stewed, so she started eating with big mouthfuls. An Dashan cut about five or six pounds of meat, and he ate it all. He also ate all the other vegetarian dishes on the table. Of course, An Dashan was the main contributor.

The family members ate until their stomachs were full and no one wanted to move. Finally, An Ning rested for a while before going to clean up the dishes. An Ning made up her mind that she must buy two servants next year, otherwise she would still have to clean up the dishes.
