After two days and two nights of bumpy rides on the train, Meng Si Ning finally arrived in Shen City. Uncle Xia had told her in advance that someone would pick her up after she got off the train. At first, she fully expected it to be her mother or Uncle Lin.
However, when Lu Cheng's tall figure came into view, Meng Si Ning's eyes lit up instantly, and his surprise was beyond words.
"Comrade Lu, are you here to pick us up?" There was a hint of excitement in her voice that was hard to conceal.
Lu Cheng saluted her solemnly, his movements quick and decisive, displaying the demeanor of a soldier. Then, he naturally took the bag from Meng Si Ning's hand and said gently, "The leader arranged for me to pick you up. I've been traveling all the way here, and I'm sorry for the hard work. Let's get in the car first." He lowered his head slightly, his gaze falling on the somewhat timid Lin Si Yun, and asked softly, "Little friend, are you tired?"
Lin Siyun shook his head slightly, but subconsciously leaned closer to Meng Sining. He was introverted and had some social anxiety.
Seeing this, Meng Si Ning quickly pulled Lin Siyun over and gently guided him, "Call Brother Lu quickly. The last time you were sick, it was Brother Lu who carried you to the hospital."
Lin Siyun finally mustered up the courage and whispered, "Brother Lu, thank you."
Lu Cheng smiled and rubbed his head, then led them out of the station. A guard had been waiting by the train for a long time, and upon seeing them approach, he quickly got off to help with the luggage.
Meng Si Ning came this time with only a light bag. She was worried that she wouldn't be able to take care of Lin Xiaodi with too much luggage, so she quietly put many of his clothes into the space.
"Comrade Meng, you're finally here! The regiment commander and I arrived here at around ten o'clock, for fear of missing the bus." The guard said enthusiastically.
"A little after ten in the morning?" Meng Si Ning repeated in surprise. She had gotten off the car a little after one in the afternoon, meaning they had been waiting for three hours. She looked up at Lu Cheng in the passenger seat. Lu Cheng said nothing, simply reminding the guard to concentrate on driving.
After a while, Lu Cheng finally spoke: "I'll take you to eat something first, and then go to the base. The base is far from the city, and it's inconvenient to go back and forth. Is there anything you need to buy?"
"Do you have any special snacks here?" Meng Si Ning asked curiously.
The guard enthusiastically introduced: "Yes, blood sausage, vermicelli and meat stew, it's delicious!"
Lin Siyun, standing by, swallowed subconsciously. He and his sister had only eaten a steamed bun on the train for lunch. It wasn't that Meng Sining didn't want to eat better; Jiang Tang had put a lot of Shenzhou snacks in her space, but she hadn't had the chance to take them out. It was mainly because the couple sharing the train compartment hadn't been out much all day.
Lu Cheng said to the guard, "Go to the state-owned hotel in the south of the city. Drive faster."
"Okay!" The guard stepped on the accelerator and the car sped towards the hotel.
It was almost two when we arrived at the restaurant. The blood sausage was sold out, but they still had pork stewed with vermicelli. The rice was also gone, so we had steamed buns with two-grain flour.
Meng Si Ning looked at Lu Cheng and the guard, each holding two large steamed buns and a large bowl of vermicelli noodles, and couldn't help asking, "Haven't you eaten yet?"
The guard was about to answer when Lu Cheng spoke first, "Yes, I ate two buns. It's rare for us to come out, so a change of taste is good."
The guard was bewildered. Why did the commander say he had eaten when he clearly hadn't? And today, knowing the train wasn't until after 1:00, he rushed him to the station so early. How strange, how strange.
Meng Si Ning looked at the guard's puzzled eyes, then looked at Lu Cheng who was eating silently with his head down. The corners of her mouth rose slightly, revealing an imperceptible smile. In fact, she understood everything.
After Lu Cheng finished his meal, he hurried to the supply and marketing cooperative next door and bought two cakes.
"You can have these as snacks when we get to the base." He handed the pastries to Meng Si Ning.
"How much is it? I'll transfer it to you." Meng Si Ning said as he was about to take out the money.
"No, I'm buying it for the child. Let's go, your family is still waiting." Lu Cheng waved his hand and refused her money.
Meng Si Ning no longer refused. After getting on the bus, she took out two big red apples from her pocket and handed one to the guard and one to Lu Cheng.
Lu Cheng was about to refuse when the guard reached out and took it. He put it under his nose and sniffed it, exclaiming, "Such a round apple! Wow, it has such a strong apple flavor! But we don't like it very much. Comrade Meng, you can keep it for yourself."
Meng Si Ning didn't take it back, but threw another apple into Lu Cheng's arms and said, "This is for you guys. I have several more in my bag."
Lu Cheng reluctantly took the apple and looked at it carefully: "There are apples at this time?"
"I don't know either. I bought it from a comrade on the train. It's sweet and crispy and delicious. Don't you want to try it?" Meng Si Ning blinked and stared at Lu Cheng without blinking. His eyes seemed to say, it would be a pity if you don't eat it.
Lu Cheng was stared at by her and had no choice but to take a bite. The moment he put the apple in his mouth, he couldn't help but be amazed. The taste was indeed excellent.
Meng Si Ning looked at his reaction with a slightly arrogant look in his eyes, thinking to himself that no matter how ordinary the fruit trees in the space were, the fruits they produced were extraordinary.
"I've already arranged a dormitory for you at the base." Lu Cheng continued, glancing at Lin Siyun who was sitting next to Meng Sining. "If it's inconvenient for you to bring him with you to work, I can arrange for someone to look after him first."
Meng Si Ning did not refuse. She thought to herself that although she should have time to take care of her brother, if she got busy with work one day, she might not be able to take care of him.
The base they were heading to wasn't a military area, but a large ship on the seashore. As soon as Meng Si Ning boarded the deck, he saw two familiar faces.
