Chapter 102: Birthday
Chapter 102: Birthday
Wen Jin didn't pick Fu Yanjing up from the hospital today, partly because he had fully recovered and they no longer needed to have any contact.
Secondly, Xiao Yin moved to a new house and invited Wen Jin to her housewarming party.
The new home is near Jiangbei University, in an old neighborhood that was originally staff dormitories for the university. So, in the heart of Jiangbei, where land is incredibly valuable, the housing prices there are still quite acceptable.
Xiaoyin and her boyfriend are not from the local area. They met in college and both chose to stay here after graduation.
Now, with my parents' help, I've bought this small house, and I finally have a home.
Xiao Yin enjoys lively gatherings and has many friends. This party invited a lot of people, including Meng Qinghe, whom she had only met a few times.
Of course, the main reason was that she had visited Tang Man at the hospital before moving, and Meng Qinghe happened to be there as well. Their previous encounters had been nothing more than nodding acquaintances; after all, Meng Qinghe possessed a refined and gentle demeanor that clashed with Xiao Yin's.
In Xiao Yin's own words, "I'm a very blunt person. I feel like talking to Dr. Meng a few more times is like having an affair with him."
Xiao Yin never expected that Meng Qinghe would volunteer to participate this time, and even offered to drive his car, worth hundreds of thousands of yuan, as a delivery driver.
She was both surprised and delighted. When she called Tang Man, she kissed Tang Man more than a dozen times through the phone, saying, "Team leader, it's all thanks to you! Thank you for your amazing connections."
Tang Man said leisurely, "You've thanked the wrong person. Someone else is the one who benefited from your good fortune."
After all, he rarely showed such enthusiasm and eagerness, so it was obvious that his true intentions were not what they seemed.
Xiao Yin, with her little brain, naturally couldn't understand Tang Man's seemingly profound words.
Wen Jin only realized Meng Qinghe was there when he saw Meng Qinghe's car downstairs at Xiao Yin's new home.
It was somewhat unexpected, but also a relief.
After all, Tang Man wasn't there, and her circle of friends didn't overlap with Xiao Yin's. When Wen Jin came, she was worried that she wouldn't be able to fit into Xiao Yin's circle.
Most of Xiaoyin's friends share the same personality as her, and Wenjin finally met the "Taurus" boyfriend that Xiaoyin described as a blockhead.
The housewarming party was incredibly lively. Everyone chatted and played games, and the several cases of wine that had been prepared well in advance were gone before they even realized it.
Everyone was quite tipsy, and only two people in the entire room didn't drink.
One is Meng Qinghe, who drives, and the other is Wen Jinye, who rarely drinks in front of outsiders.
The task of buying the wine naturally fell to the two of them.
In such situations, cigarettes and alcohol are indispensable; the smell of alcohol mixed with the smell of cigarettes makes the room stuffy and stuffy. Wen Jin also felt a bit stuffy, so she volunteered to get up from beside the low table, "I'll go to the supermarket downstairs to buy some."
It started raining outside sometime ago.
Meng Qinghe picked up the umbrella by the door. "I'll go with you."
The rain was light, like silk threads weaving a dense veil over the city's night sky, the air filled with the scent of damp earth.
The cool air relieved Wen Jin's chest tightness considerably.
Wen Jin also bought two cases of the wine that Xiao Yin had sent him. Just as he was about to pay, Meng Qinghe snatched his phone away without warning.
He took a bottle of hot milk to the cashier's counter as well, saying, "I'll take care of it."
Wen Jin didn't think much of it, assuming it was someone else's childcare.
As they left the supermarket, Meng Qinghe carried the two heavy bags of wine in one hand and held an umbrella in the other.
His palms, bearing all the weight, were red from being squeezed by the bag, but he refused Wen Jinye's help.
But the bottle of hot milk was stuffed into Wen Jinye's arms.
"Drink it while it's hot."
Wen Jin was also a little surprised, "Did you buy this for me?"
"I noticed you ate less tonight, and your lips were paler than usual. You also touched your stomach a couple of times while eating, so I'm guessing you might be on your period."
Meng Qinghe awkwardly shifted her gaze away from Wen Jinye, her lowered eyes seeming to conceal some flustered emotions.
But the fluttering panic was hidden in Meng Qinghe's heart. His gentle voice made it impossible for anyone to detect any flaws. "I'm sorry, don't blame me for over-observing and speculating. It's just a professional habit."
Psychologists are skilled at judging a patient's psychology from their every move and subtle changes in expression.
He is very thoughtful, and Wen Jin knew that from the first day she met him.
"Thank you, Qinghe."
I had only taken a couple of steps when, in the dim light of the rainy night, a figure became clearer as it approached.
She was an elderly woman in her seventies, but that description isn't really accurate.
Aside from her gray hair, everything about her—from her demeanor and clothing to her overall spirit—exudes an air of high intelligence and nobility.
Even her hair was elegantly styled in an updo, giving her an excellent demeanor.
This place was originally staff housing for Jiangbei University, where many retired teachers lived out their retirement years.
She walked alone in the rain. Wen Jin was just about to discuss with Meng Qinghe whether they should ask the old man if he needed an umbrella, since their building was just ahead.
But then Meng Qinghe exclaimed in surprise, "Teacher? What are you doing here?"
"It's been a long time since I've been here. I remembered I had a lot of old photos here. I was just getting an album when it started raining."
There is only one umbrella.
Meng Qinghe hesitated for a moment.
Wen Jinye took the umbrella from Meng Qinghe with her soft, white hands and held it over the old man's head.
Who is this?
“Wen Jinye.”
The introduction, without any prefixes or suffixes, consists of only three simple words. While seemingly concise and clear, it actually conceals Meng Qinghe's little-known thoughts.
He did not draw clear boundaries in their relationship.
It's unclear whether it's because they know their star pupils too well, or because psychological experts are adept at understanding people's minds.
The old man gave Meng Qinghe a deep look, and when he looked at Wen Jinye, there was a hint of meaningful kindness in his eyes.
Meng Qinghe introduced to Wen Jin, "This is my university teacher, Professor Chen."
Meng Qinghe did his undergraduate studies at Jiangbei University. His professor at the time has since retired, but he was a prominent figure at the university, a well-known academic genius, and the professor's favorite student. So they have kept in touch for many years.
Out of courtesy, Wen Jin followed Meng Qinghe's lead and greeted him, "Hello, teacher."
"Good, good, good." Professor Chen liked Wen Jin more and more as he looked at her. Her face was clean and beautiful even without makeup. "It's rare to see Qinghe, this taciturn guy, with a woman by his side. Because of this, I didn't dare to recognize her just now."
"Do you have time tomorrow, young lady?"
Wen Jin was also baffled by the question, but she had the day off tomorrow.
Wen Jin nodded and answered truthfully, "Yes, is there anything you need me to do?"
"Tomorrow is my seventieth birthday. When you get old, you just love being around people. If you have time and don't mind, come with Qinghe tomorrow. Many of my students will be there. You're all the same age, so you should have a lot in common."
"I've been teaching for most of my life, and there aren't many people I can feel an instant connection with. Miss Wen, you're one of them."
Unable to refuse Professor Chen's kind invitation, Wen Jin also found it difficult to decline.
Her clear, gentle voice, accompanied by the light drizzle, softly replied, "Okay."
However, Wen Jin did not expect to see Fu Yanjing there.

A note from the author:
The company has been so incredibly busy lately, it almost burned me out.
It's almost time for a plot I really like. I love seeing the equally matched moments between the male lead and the second male lead in some dramatic situations.
I will continue to read everyone's comments. I can't give you an exact answer as to how long this book will be. I'll just write what I want to write. Both the male and female protagonists are characters who grow and develop.
See you tomorrow!
Please give me a five-star review and urge me to update!
