Chapter 39

Chapter 39

Yu Miaomiao found a baby monster.

It was a tiny creature, about the size of a palm, with short limbs and a long tail. It was very affectionate towards her, completely unguarded when meeting someone for the first time. It nestled in her hand, sucking its fingers and fast asleep, its little pink tongue dangling out, oblivious to everything.

But she has no interest in raising children.

She immediately called the Department of Enforcement of the Demon Slayers to explain the situation, and someone arrived in less than half an hour.

It took quite a bit of effort to pull the cub away from Yu Miaomiao's hand and take it away. When they separated, the cub howled angrily and even tried to bite her.

But its teeth hadn't grown in yet, so biting someone was like giving them a massage with its gums, and in the end, it was ruthlessly stuffed into a cage.

-

Yu Miaomiao originally thought this was just a minor incident in her life.

Two days later, however, the Enforcement Division called her and asked her to come over so they could ask her something.

She stayed up all night coding the night before and then attended classes all morning.

I was just about to take a nap this afternoon, but hearing the anxious and serious voice on the phone, I washed my face, cheered myself up, and went out.

Yu Miaomiao arrived at the Monster Department, and the meeting took place in a small conference room next to the laboratory, where two people greeted her.

One was a man in a law enforcement uniform; the other was a younger man in a white coat.

But the two of them had one thing in common: they looked haggard and had huge dark circles under their eyes.

He looked even worse off than she was.

"Ms. Yu, hello, I am Wu An, an employee of the Enforcement Division."

"Hello, I am Xu Zhou, a researcher in the laboratory."

The two men greeted Yu Miaomiao and shook hands with her.

"Ms. Yu, the main reason I called you here today is to ask you to explain the details of what happened."

Wu An spoke first.

Yu Miaomiao then recounted the events of that day in detail.

"I was waiting for the bus at the bus stop, and then..."

After she finished speaking, Wu An made a note of it and looked at Xu Zhou, "Engineer Xu, did you find anything?"

The man treated the younger researcher with great respect.

The researcher named Xu Zhou pondered for a moment before asking a serious question.

"So, Miss Yu, in your perception, this cub appeared suddenly without any warning?"

"right."

Yu Miaomiao said confidently, "I absolutely cannot be mistaken."

"Then we can confirm it."

Xu Zhou breathed a sigh of relief and made a judgment.

"This is a snow leopard with the extremely rare talent of spatial jumping."

"Is it a snow leopard?"

Yu Miaomiao noticed the last two words first, and even her drowsiness dissipated considerably.

She recalled the feline cub whose eyes were still closed. Although she thought the white and black spots on its fur were a bit odd and its tail was a little too long, she never imagined it was a snow leopard.

After all, snow leopards are a Class I protected animal in China and are already rare, yet a monster has appeared.

"Yes, it sounds incredible."

Xu Zhou pushed up his glasses. "There are no more than 50 snow leopard monsters registered nationwide, and they are all distributed in the southwest region. Logically speaking, they should never appear in City A in the central region."

"But based on its physical characteristics and DNA testing, it can be determined that this is a genuine snow leopard monster."

Then, she noticed another detail in the other person's words.

"What is innate ability?"

Xu Zhou straightened his back, his expression becoming proud. "Oh, this is a viewpoint from one of my recently published papers."

He explained, "I believe that some monsters are born with special abilities that do not require practice or the consumption of demonic power. Instead, they are activated by the resonance of spiritual energy drawn through their bloodline, so they can be used even without demonic power."

"The innate abilities that our team has discovered so far include shapeshifting, manipulating emotions, and altering the climate on a small scale, among others."

"After this snow leopard cub was brought back, it has been making uncontrolled spatial jumps without any magical fluctuations and is not controlled by any restraining artifacts."

"It perfectly matches some characteristics of innate abilities."

Xu Zhou clapped his hands, looking very excited, "After hearing your description, I'm even more certain."

"This snow leopard possesses the innate ability to jump through space."

"So its appearance in the grass is not because it was abandoned, but because its own innate ability was activated."

"Engineer Xu, now that it's been confirmed, is there any way to control its spatial jump?"

Wu An looked at Xu Zhou with hope, "These past few days, our company has been in complete chaos because of this cub. We haven't had a good night's sleep, and we have to take turns keeping watch at night, for fear that he might accidentally disappear."

"no way."

Xu Zhou shrugged nonchalantly, "My research on innate abilities is still in its early stages, let alone this newly emerging ability."

"but……"

He drew out the sound.

"But what?" Wu An's hope was rekindled.

“Talented abilities are inherited through bloodlines, so its parents must also possess this ability.”

"If we find its parents, perhaps there's a way to control it."

He patted Wu An on the shoulder and said with a smile, "I'm only in charge of the research. Finding the right people is up to you guys."

"ah--"

Wu An let out a long, miserable scream.

Seeing that there was nothing for her to do, Yu Miaomiao packed her things and said, "I'm leaving now."

Wu An stood up. "I'll see you out."

As soon as the two stood up, Yu Miaomiao suddenly noticed an unfamiliar presence beside her.

She turned her head and found a little cub lying on the table.

The little cub, with its white fur speckled with black spots, was curled up and fast asleep.

Xu Zhou exclaimed "Eh!" and picked up the little one.

"They've come all the way here."

Outside the door, the sound of knocking and opening the door echoed in the hallway.

A weary and numb male voice called out, "Have you seen a snow leopard cub?"

Have you seen a snow leopard cub?

Have you seen a snow leopard cub?

...

Soon after, there was a knock on the conference room door.

Have you seen a snow leopard cub?

Wu An responded loudly, "Here!"

The man finally found the cub, but he didn't seem particularly happy.

"The interval between the two jumps was 43 minutes, which is good and shows improvement."

The man carried the cub outside, but just as he reached the door, the cub suddenly disappeared and reappeared on the desk.

He glanced around as if it were second nature, grabbed the cub by the scruff of its neck from the desk, and walked out again.

"Looks like you can't handle praise."

He walked out, and as soon as the office door closed, another question arose: "Where did it go again?"

Inside the door, Wu An and Yu Miaomiao looked at each other, bewildered, at the cub on the desk.

The cub, oblivious to everything, rolled over and moved toward Yu Miaomiao until it touched her hand, then fell asleep peacefully.

Xu Zhou stood up abruptly, his eyes shining as he looked at Yu Miaomiao.

"You can't leave yet."

Yu Miaomiao frowned, a bad feeling creeping over her.

...

Two hours later.

"You mean, you want me to keep it?"

Yu Miaomiao pointed at the little cub and asked incredulously.

"Yes."

Xu Zhou took out a report and smiled, "Experiments have shown that keeping it by your side is the best choice."

Through his rigorous experimental verification, he came to a conclusion.

Upon sensing Yu Miaomiao's presence, the cubs will unconsciously perform spatial jumps towards Yu Miaomiao's location.

However, when it is near Yu Miaomiao, its spatial jumping ability will be suppressed.

The area within this "surrounding" area, after precise measurement, is approximately within a radius of 3.2 meters centered on Yu Miaomiao.

“Impossible.” Yu Miaomiao refused outright.

She's not a kind person; she wouldn't be foolish enough to do something so mentally and physically exhausting.

Xu Zhouxiao appealed to his emotions: "Letting it jump through space is a very dangerous thing."

"Perhaps because it is newly born, the cub's body is still too weak, resulting in the observed distance of each jump not exceeding 20 meters. However, since it was able to come to City A from an unknown place, the possibility of triggering an ultra-long-distance jump cannot be ruled out."

"It's less than twenty days old and has no chance of survival. It was lucky to meet you last time, but what about next time?"

"It might appear in a trash can, it might appear in a sewer, it might appear on a busy street, or in an ordinary person's home..."

He sighed. "The Enforcement Division can't possibly find it every time."

Yu Miaomiao glanced at the ugly cub who was fast asleep, clinging to her arms.

Having just finished drinking milk, with white milk stains still on the corners of its mouth, its pink, bulging belly bobbing up and down, and its long tail swishing back and forth, it looked very relaxed, as if it were having a sweet dream.

She moved her finger slightly, and the little cub immediately moved to follow, even wrapping its tail around her.

Seeing that Yu Miaomiao was showing signs of softening, Xu Zhou quickly pressed his advantage.

"Don't worry, the Enforcement Division will do everything in its power to find its parents, Wu An!"

"Ah, right!" Wu An patted his chest and assured him, "Don't worry, I'll start looking right away, and I guarantee results within a week!"

Yu Miaomiao pondered, as if seriously considering: "If I were to raise it..."

Xu Zhou and Wu An looked at her expectantly.

What benefit would it bring me?

She changed the subject and asked the two of them a question in return.

"I'm not a formal employee of the Monster Department. I don't get a salary or bonus, and it would be a waste of my energy. It's not worth it."

Xu Zhou understood immediately. "Don't worry, once we find its parents, my research will also yield results, and I'll apply for an award for significant scientific research contributions for you."

Wu An suddenly realized and chimed in, "Our department has the authority to submit applications for the best monsters in City A this year. I'll submit an application to the leadership and have you nominated."

Yu Miaomiao nodded decisively, "I agree."

She doesn't do things that don't bring her any benefit.

She signed several agreements and took several photos while holding a snow leopard cub.

These past few days, the researchers who were in charge of taking care of the cubs gave her a whole bunch of milk powder supplements. With a relieved expression, they held Yu Miaomiao's hand as if she were a great benefactor, and thanked her repeatedly.

Yu Miaomiao carried the insulated box home and began her life of raising cubs.

Although she had never owned a snow leopard, or to be precise, she had never owned a pet.

But as a cat demon, surely she can't raise a fellow cat?
