Chapter 43

Chapter 43

Xiaobai loves her new name very much.

Anyone who calls it will receive an excited response.

Even when Jiang Cheng, whom it dislikes the most, calls its name, it will purr.

For example, Yu Miaomiao is discussing complementary food with Jiang Chengyi.

"We'll add some bok choy next week."

"I'm going to the supermarket—"

"Aww!"

The chubby little boy rushed into the kitchen, his round eyes gazing expectantly at Yu Miaomiao.

"I didn't call you."

Yu Miaomiao coldly said, "Go play by yourself."

Little White shuffled back dejectedly, biting its tail as it lay on the mat, grieving alone.

-

Li Zhi came to pet the cat again and brought a gift for Xiao Bai.

"Ta-da, look!"

She took out a colorful woven leather collar, saying, "If you're taking Xiaobai out to play, you'll need a collar."

"It's made of leather, so it won't break easily, and its name is even engraved on it."

She pointed to the brass plaque in the center of the collar, which read "Xiaobai" on it.

Then I turned it over, and there was Yu Miaomiao's phone number.

"This way you won't get lost for a long time."

She showed it to Xiaobai, "Xiaobai, Xiaobai, what do you think?"

Little White seemed to really like the pretty collar, hugging it and chewing on it as if it were a teething toy.

"Don't bite!"

Li Zhi rescued the collar from Xiao Bai's mouth.

"This is high-tech; it has positioning and physical monitoring software inside. It would be bad if it got damaged by biting."

Yu Miaomiao put the collar on Xiaobai, adding a bright touch of color to its gray fur, like the finishing touch, making it extremely beautiful.

-

Yu Miaomiao started taking Xiaobai out on nice days.

To avoid being seen by too many people, Jiang Chengyi usually drives to a quiet park with few people, and then lets Xiaobai out to frolic on the grass.

The unfamiliar outdoor environment filled Xiaobai with curiosity.

A large sycamore leaf, an empty mineral water bottle, or a loudly chirping cricket can keep it entertained for a long time.

Occasionally, someone would see Xiaobai and ask about this beautiful big cat, but Yu Miaomiao and Jiang Cheng would always brush it off.

But there were also some unexpected people.

"Hey, are you Yu Miaomiao?"

On the way back, an agitated boy stopped the two of them.

He introduced himself excitedly yet shyly, "I'm a freshman at University A, and I'm also in the Computer Science department!"

Then, his eyes lit up with fervor as he looked at Yu Miaomiao, "I watched CAE's live stream, you're amazing!"

"I used to dislike computers completely, but now I've decided to learn from you and participate in CAE competitions!"

"I'm still the moderator of the Computer Science section of the University A forum. I've created a discussion area for Yu Miaomiao. Don't worry, I've deleted all the posts that insult you."

“Those people don’t understand you at all, they just know how to hurl insults at you, I…”

Yu Miaomiao hummed a few times, trying to brush it off, and wanted to leave as soon as possible.

But the boy looked at Jiang Chengyi beside him with suspicion and an unfriendly expression.

"Are you Jiang Chengyi?"

Jiang Cheng nodded in response.

The boy stumbled back a few steps, utterly shocked, as if struck by lightning. "Didn't you two break up? Why are you still walking the dog—no, the cat—together!"

"They got back together?"

"No, I don't believe it!"

He was filled with righteous indignation, "When you were being attacked by the entire internet, he, as your boyfriend, didn't even stand up for you. He just pretended to be dead. What's the point of being with such an irresponsible scumbag!"

After the competition, Yu Miaomiao asked Li Zhi, who had many friends, to spread the news that the two had broken up.

Jiang Chengyi also entrusted several trusted members of the association to help push things along.

Before long, the gossip about the two stopped circulating at school.

They then started arguing about who had wronged whom, and the post that was highlighted in red was displayed on the forum's homepage for several days.

Yu Miaomiao never expected to see someone from her university in a park so far away from A University.

He seems to be someone who knows a lot about these kinds of gossip.

After a series of attempts to appease each other, they finally managed to escape under the other's resentful gaze.

The boy chased after him, calling out persistently:

"Yu Miaomiao, you must keep your eyes open and not be fooled by this kind of scumbag!"

Even after getting into the car, Yu Miaomiao was still confused.

"Why is he so concerned about my affairs? We don't even know each other."

Jiang Chengyi coughed lightly, "Do you know what... a toxic fan is?"

-

It has been two weeks since my last visit to the hospital for a check-up.

That morning, Wu An waited downstairs as usual. When he saw Yu Miaomiao come down, he felt a little uncomfortable, remembering what had happened last time.

He greeted us in a businesslike manner, opened and closed the car door, and sped off, seemingly eager to finish the journey as quickly as possible.

Compared to the last check-up, Dr. Xu ordered more tests this time.

Bai Muyun accompanied him as before.

Half a month later, his medium-length hair had been replaced with short hair, the highlights had disappeared, and his hair was pure white.

He was clearly surprised to see Xiaobai.

"You've grown so much! You're so chubby!"

Just two weeks ago, it was a white cat-like creature, quite plump and cute.

Now it seems there is a trend towards development towards semi-trailers.

Little Bai seemed to understand the doctor's words, and started to whine softly, snuggling into Yu Miaomiao's arms with a wronged expression.

Yu Miaomiao glanced at Bai Muyun and patted the cub's wonderfully soft head to comfort it.

"This is a normal body type during rapid growth spurt."

"Okay, okay, normal body type, I misspoke."

Bai Muyun bent down, looked at the cub at eye level, and smiled, "I'm sorry, Little Bai."

"Let's go get checked out."

This checkup took much longer than the last one.

It wasn't until 6 p.m., after most of the hospital staff had gone home, that the work was almost finished.

Everyone was exhausted from running up and down the stairs. Bai Muyun flipped through the checklist and encouraged them, "There's only one left."

Xiao Bai was carried into the medical room by Bai Muyun.

He came out shortly after and said, "This examination will take about two hours. You can go and have a meal first."

Jiang Cheng asked, "What project is it?"

“MRI,” Bai Muyun explained, “is simply magnetic resonance imaging. This procedure involves many steps, so it takes a relatively long time.”

“I know very well.”

As an outstanding student in the Department of Veterinary Medicine, how could Jiang Chengyi not know about this kind of medical examination?

Knowing this, his expression turned slightly suspicious. "MRI is usually used for suspected lesions. Why would you do it on a baby less than two months old?"

Bai Muyun's expression remained unchanged, and he said with a smile, "I don't know either."

Jiang Cheng stepped forward and stared coldly at Bai Muyun. "The MRI machine is dimly lit, small, and noisy. Is it reasonable to keep a cub motionless for two hours in such an environment?"

"I need an explanation."

Bai Muyun did not respond, but instead looked at Wu An, "Mr. Wu, I have something I want to say to you."

Under Jiang Chengyi's cold gaze, the two walked to the side.

Bai Muyun whispered to Wu An, "You know this cub is no ordinary creature, right?"

"This is an examination of the inner core. It's not appropriate to say it out loud in front of humans."

Wu An nodded knowingly.

After returning, he explained to Jiang Chengyi, and after much persuasion, he finally managed to get away with it.

Jiang Chengyi still didn't believe it, but since he wasn't the cub's attending physician, he couldn't directly intervene and had to give up.

However, the look in his eyes when he looked at Bai Muyun still carried a hint of doubt.

As for Yu Miaomiao, since she knew that Xiaobai was not an ordinary animal cub and could sense the cub's aura fluctuations, she was not very worried.

Bai Muyun went back inside, and the door closed tightly.

The atmosphere quieted down, and Yu Miaomiao and Jiang Cheng sat side by side, one typing something on her phone and the other looking at the medical report.

Although there was no interaction, there was an atmosphere around him that made it impossible for others to fit in.

Wu An was getting bored and wanted to say something to pass the time.

But when faced with a half-demon and a human, there were some things he just couldn't bring himself to say.

He simply said hello and took the opportunity to go eat.

Yu Miaomiao sat on the bench by the door and replied to several messages.

As dusk fell, the fatigue from a busy day slowly crept in.

She turned off her phone, and her eyelids drooped heavily as if they were out of power, but she forced them open again.

At some point, the power finally went out completely. She closed her eyes, tilted her head, and fell asleep.

A few minutes, or perhaps ten minutes, passed.

Yu Miaomiao suddenly woke up with a start.

A short nap made her feel much better.

She shifted her body, trying to straighten her head.

At that moment, the thing she was leaning on also moved.

This made her realize that the thing around her was a living person.

"woke up"

The living person spoke.

She sat up abruptly and looked at Jiang Chengyi beside her.

The other person was looking at her with a calm expression, showing no surprise whatsoever.

It was as if falling asleep next to him was the most natural thing in the world.

So, she had been sleeping next to Jiang Cheng the whole time!

Yu Miaomiao lowered her gaze to Jiang Chengyi's left arm.

The clothes there had deep folds, were slightly raised, and presented an unnatural posture that had been maintained for a long time.

"Your arm..."

"fine."

Jiang Cheng withdrew his left arm as if nothing had happened, and then asked, "There's still half an hour left, do you want to go for a walk?"

Yu Miaomiao shook her head, "I'll just sit here."

The little white creature inside the door was already very weak. If it stood up and moved around again, it might accidentally go beyond the range.

Thinking of Xiaobai, she sensed it again. The cub's aura was much fainter than before, but clear and stable.

Perhaps it's an MRI scan inside the device, she thought.

Wu An also finished eating and came back to wait together.

Two hours have passed, but the door still hasn't been opened.

The three waited for another ten minutes before Wu An couldn't resist dialing Bai Muyun's number.

When no one answered, he simply stood up and knocked on the door.

The clanging sound echoed in the quiet corridor.

"Dr. Bai, Dr. Bai, why aren't you opening the door? Has something happened?"

The gate remained tightly shut.

Jiang Cheng found the phone number of the person in charge of the equipment on the sign on the door and called it.

However, the answer was unexpected.

"The MRI room closed at 5 p.m. today. I didn't receive any notification that anyone would be having an examination after get off work."

"Are you sure you're not mistaken?"
