Chapter 51

Chapter 51

"hiss--"

When Yu Miaomiao woke up again, she had a splitting headache.

The pain was strange, like a nerve being torn apart, throbbing in waves.

After a while, the pain subsided, and she opened her eyes to see the furnishings of the ward.

"Miaomiao, you're finally awake!"

A familiar voice sounded beside the bed.

She turned her head with difficulty and saw Hu Li lying on her hospital bed, looking both surprised and sleepy, as if she had just woken up.

Where...am I?

"This is the Monster Hospital. You were brought here for emergency treatment after you fainted. I've been watching over you for three days, and you've finally woken up!"

Three days have passed...

Yu Miaomiao immediately threw off the covers and tried to sit up, but her arms were as limp as cotton and she couldn't support her body at all.

She managed to lift her upper body slightly before collapsing onto the bed, exhausted.

"Hey, Miaomiao, tell me what you're going to do, don't move around on your own."

"I'm going to find Jiang Chengyi."

Hu Li's ears twitched with anger. "What kind of time is this? You're still concerned about that human!"

Yu Miaomiao pursed her lips: "He was seriously injured because of me."

Hu Li jumped up, "Do you know that your condition is much worse than that human's!"

She pulled a stack of test reports from her bag and threw them in front of Yu Miaomiao.

His eyes were red-rimmed. "Repeatedly overdrawing one's demonic power is extremely damaging to one's foundation."

"You don't have an inner core, so your demonic power can't be replenished. You can only desperately extract it from your flesh and blood."

"Do you know why you can't sit up? It's because your body is like a house riddled with holes by worms, teetering on the verge of collapse, and you can't exert any strength at all!"

"Does the Exam Supervision Committee investigate?" Yu Miaomiao suddenly asked.

Hu Li subconsciously replied, "There's no such provision in the latest announcement."

Then Yu Miaomiao nodded, her expression calm, "That's enough."

Hu Li felt a surge of anger rising within her, but before she could vent it, she heard Yu Miaomiao say, "I'm going to see Jiang Chengyi."

Enraged to the point of standing on end, she suddenly paused when she saw Yu Miaomiao's anxious and worried eyes.

It seemed like this was the first time she had seen Yu Miaomiao with such vivid and expressive emotions.

Even though the object of her emotions made her extremely unhappy, she still gave in.

She picked up her baseball cap and put it on her head. "Okay, okay, I'll take you there, alright?"

The two hospitals are not far apart. Hu Li stopped the car and tried to take the wheelchair out of the trunk.

But Yu Miaomiao stopped her—she insisted on walking by herself.

So Hu Li could only help Yu Miaomiao and slowly walk towards the hospital.

The two asked the front desk and learned that visits were not allowed in Jiang Chengyi's hospital room.

After much pleading and persuasion, Hu Li finally got an opportunity.

They asked for the room number, walked to the ward, and knocked on the door.

"Please come in."

A response came from inside the door; the voice was low and crisp, with a hint of nonchalance.

The two went inside. Inside, the man was wearing a hospital gown, leaning against the bed, reading a newspaper. His slightly long hair partially covered his eyebrows and eyes, revealing only the smooth lines of his nose.

He casually flipped through a page, his gaze unfocused, clearly indicating that his attention was not on the news.

Hearing the noise, he looked up, his gaze sweeping across the doorway before suddenly fixing on Yu Miaomiao, his previously indifferent and nonchalant expression changing instantly.

Jiang Cheng threw down the newspaper, his phoenix eyes fixed on Yu Miaomiao, his gaze flickering as if he had a thousand words to say.

But after his throat tightened, he only said, "The doctor said you fainted in front of the operating room."

"How are you?"

"I was just too tired and fell asleep."

Yu Miaomiao said calmly.

She tugged at Hu Li, who helped her up, and the two sat down in front of the hospital bed.

Hu Li moved the chair very loudly, seemingly using this method to express her inner dissatisfaction.

Jiang Cheng turned his gaze to Hu Li, somewhat surprised, as if only now did he realize that besides Yu Miaomiao, there was another person.

Who is this?

“Hu Li, my friend,” Yu Miaomiao said, “she drove me here.”

She looked at Jiang Chengyi covered in testing equipment and asked softly, "How are you now?"

"The doctor said I'm recovering quickly, but I still need to be observed for at least half a month, during which time I can't get out of bed."

He raised his left hand, a pulse oximeter between his fingertips, "You have to carry this with you at all times."

“I just woke up this morning. I wanted to go see you, but the doctor kept stopping me.”

Yu Miaomiao suddenly relaxed and murmured, "That's good."

He then said sternly, "Listen to the doctor, you are not allowed to get out of bed."

Jiang Cheng looked at the girl and said, "But I'm very worried about you."

Without hesitation, Yu Miaomiao replied, "Then I'll come find you."

Hu Li looked at Jiang Chengyi, then at Yu Miaomiao.

One of them had a faint flush on his face and looked quite healthy; the other was deathly pale, as if he was about to collapse at any moment.

In contrast, Yu Miaomiao is more like the one who has been stabbed and needs to lie in a hospital bed.

Hu Li was furious: "I told her not to come, not to come, but she insisted on coming. Do you even know what kind of person she is—"

Her words came to an abrupt halt under Yu Miaomiao's warning gaze.

She glared at Jiang Chengyi, gritted her teeth, and turned her head away, not wanting to pay any more attention to Yu Miaomiao.

Before Jiang Chengyi could say anything more, there was another knock on the ward door.

The person who entered was a middle-aged man who was unfamiliar. He was lean, well-mannered, and carrying a briefcase.

He introduced himself: "Hello, I am Wei Zhengye from the Public Opinion Department. Is Ms. Yu Miaomiao here?"

Yu Miaomiao stood up, supporting herself on the chair. "Yes, that's me."

Wei Zhengye stepped forward to shake hands, smiling broadly, "I'm really sorry to bother you, but I have something urgent to discuss with you. Please come in."

Yu Miaomiao showed no surprise, as if she had already anticipated the purpose of the visitor. "Let's go."

The two sat down in the temporarily vacated meeting room.

Wei Zhengye spoke first: "Jiang Chengyi already knows about the existence of the monster, you should know that, right?"

Yu Miaomiao nodded, "I know."

Not only did she know, but she also told Jiang Chengyi on her own initiative.

"According to the investigation, Jiang Chengyi is an ordinary human and does not possess any demon bloodline, which clearly violates the Demon Secrecy Law."

Wei Zhengye said slowly and deliberately, "According to the provisions of the Secrecy Law, in this situation, either someone has to drink an amnesia potion, or a monster is willing to sign a Secrecy Joint Liability Agreement."

“In the past three days, I have contacted all the monsters who have had contact with Jiang Chengyi, and not a single one of them is willing to sign.”

He took a stack of documents out of his briefcase.

Yu Miaomiao looked over and found that they were all signed "Wasteful Commitment Letters".

There were Liu Wenzheng, Wu An, and more than a dozen members of the Enforcement Division.

Wei Zhengye pulled out a blank "Letter of Commitment" from the bottom and pushed it to Yu Miaomiao.

"Ms. Yu, these are all necessary procedures. Please don't find them troublesome; just sign them."

His expression held a kind of practiced weariness; he had dealt with this kind of thing a thousand or eight hundred times since transferring to the emergency public relations department.

The process is pretty much the same each time: ask all the monsters that have come into contact with humans, collect the "Letter of Waiver of Commitment", apply for the Forgetfulness Agent, and archive all the documents.

As for the "Joint Liability Agreement"?

What a joke! How could any monster possibly be willing to vouch for a human in such a sudden event?

At first, he dutifully printed out all the documents, but later he realized that printing them was a waste of paper, so he simply brought only the "Wait and Waiver of Commitment".

Seeing the girl staring at the "Letter of Commitment" for a long time, he became a little impatient: "Ms. Yu, don't worry, the documents are all templates, there are no hidden clauses, please sign them quickly."

But Yu Miaomiao pushed the document over, saying, "Who said I was going to sign this?"

As Wei Zhengye stared in disbelief, she looked up and said, "Give me the 'Joint Liability Agreement,' I want to sign that copy."

Wei Zhengye suddenly stood up, the chair scraping against the floor with a screeching sound.

He looked at Yu Miaomiao in disbelief. "Miss Yu, do you know what you're saying?"

"Sign this document, and you'll be bound to this human!"

"How could these humans possibly resist leaking information about monsters? If the Public Opinion Bureau detects this, you'll be held jointly liable!"

Yu Miaomiao's expression remained unchanged. "I know."

Seeing that the girl was still stubborn, Wei Zhengye earnestly advised her: "The recruitment requirements for the Monster Department are getting stricter and stricter, especially in terms of social connections. You are a student at A University with such good grades. You should have been able to get into the Monster Department easily, but if you sign this contract, you can forget about it."

Yu Miaomiao repeated, "I know."

Wei Zhengye changed his perspective, "Humans are cowardly creatures. If they get stabbed by a monster, they might not want to retain the memory. They'd rather drink an amnesia potion, take the reward, and leave. Why would you take the initiative to take responsibility for them?"

The girl finally raised her head, slightly parted her lips, as if she wanted to say something.

"What, you've finally figured it out?"

Wei Zhengye said impatiently.

"After talking for so long," Yu Miaomiao slowly extended her hand, "Mr. Wei, shouldn't you give me the 'Joint Liability Agreement' by now?"

Wei Zhengye's throat was dry from trying to persuade him, but seeing that the other party was not swayed at all and even disregarded his words, he became somewhat annoyed. He said, "Fine, fine, if you want to ruin your future, I don't care!"

He opened his briefcase, intending to take out the documents and slam them onto the table.

But after searching high and low, all that was available was a "Wasteful Commitment Letter".

The anger that had been building up suddenly subsided.

He was a little embarrassed and quickly said, "I didn't bring any documents with me. I'll go print them out now."

Without even glancing at Yu Miaomiao, he hurriedly walked out.

Five minutes later, Wei Zhengye returned with the documents.

He pushed the "Confidentiality Joint Liability Agreement" in front of Yu Miaomiao.

The anger from before had vanished, replaced by a helpless tone: "Are you really sure you've thought this through? You won't regret it?"

Yu Miaomiao picked up the pen and signed her name at the bottom of the document.

Her frail body made every stroke of her pen crooked and shaky, her handwriting trembling and out of shape, yet she did not hesitate.

After finishing writing, she threw down the pen, stared at the black signature, and said, "I don't regret it."

The voice was low but firm, it was unclear whether it was responding to Wei Zhengye or talking to itself.
