Chapter 54

Chapter 54

The next morning, Jiang Cheng carried two bags of fresh ingredients, opened Yu Miaomiao's door, walked inside, and met Yu Miaomiao's eyes as she sat at the table typing on her computer.

"Thank you for yesterday."

Yu Miaomiao quickly shifted her gaze back to the computer screen and spoke first, "I'm much better today, I don't need to be taken care of anymore."

Beneath her seemingly indifferent demeanor lay a hint of unease, suggesting she hadn't forgotten what happened yesterday.

Jiang Cheng couldn't help but chuckle when he saw that Yu Miaomiao had changed her keyboard typing posture three times in just over ten seconds since he entered the room.

To avoid making Yu Miaomiao feel too awkward, he considerately said, "Then I'll head back now."

The door closed, and Yu Miaomiao stopped typing. She breathed a sigh of relief and looked at the screen, only to find that the few lines she had just typed were all gibberish.

She tried to cover up the garbled text by deleting it, and just as she was about to concentrate on writing code, the door reopened.

Yu Miaomiao turned her head sharply, and it was Jiang Chengyi again.

"We can't waste the groceries we just bought." He smiled slightly, picked up the ingredients in his hand, and said, "Could I go to the kitchen and cook something?"

She nodded, and the other person walked straight into the kitchen. Only after that figure disappeared into the kitchen did she finally calm down and start writing code.

Soon after, Yu Miaomiao heard a series of clattering sounds coming from the kitchen.

Her coding became slower and slower. Finally, curiosity overcame her embarrassment, so she simply turned off her computer, went into the kitchen, and saw Jiang Cheng efficiently washing and preparing the ingredients.

"What are you doing?" she asked.

"I cook these ingredients into a meal and store it in the freezer. When you want to eat it, I take it out and microwave it for five minutes. It will last for a week."

As he spoke, Jiang Chengyi continued to move.

Recalling the delicious taste of the food, Yu Miaomiao volunteered, "Teach me how to make it."

That way, she can cook for herself.

Although her cooking skills were shockingly bad, she decided to try her best to learn in order to make delicious food.

Ten minutes later, Jiang Cheng pushed Yu Miaomiao out of the kitchen, her sleeves dripping wet and a corner of her clothes burned.

"I'll do it," Jiang Chengyi said helplessly. "From now on, I'll make a week's worth for you each time, so you don't have to make it yourself."

"Really?" Yu Miaomiao's eyes lit up. "No taking it back!"

"Okay, I won't go back on my word."

Jiang Chengyi's voice carried a subtle hint of amusement.

-

The next day, Wu An sent a message to Yu Miaomiao that Xiao Bai's parents had been found.

She and Jiang Cheng took Xiaobai to the Demon Department.

Along the way, all the monsters cast astonished glances at Jiang Chengyi, this strange human, and whispered among themselves.

"How could there be humans here? Where are the law enforcement officers? Why haven't they come to arrest them yet?"

"Why are you arresting anyone? This human is with a monster, so he obviously didn't sneak in."

"Could it be a newly hired human employee?"

"Impossible, the department hasn't hired a human in ages!"

"Please, please don't come to our company."

...

The monsters' whispers were quite loud; at least Yu Miaomiao could hear them clearly.

As I passed a workstation, a fair-skinned young monster covered his nose and waved his hand dismissively.

"Huh, what's that smell?"

His voice was so loud that even Jiang Chengyi heard it, but he walked past without changing his expression or reacting at all.

Yu Miaomiao stopped in her tracks.

She turned around and stared at the employee with a blank expression.

The employee, feeling uneasy under their gaze, stammered, "W-what do you want?"

Yu Miaomiao's voice was cold, "Repeat what you just said."

"It's just 'what does it taste like', so what? I didn't swear at anyone."

The employee offered a flimsy explanation: "I have a human allergy, so I can't stand their smell."

"Human allergies," Yu Miaomiao repeated, then sneered, "What a strange disease. Does the lab know about it? Has anyone tried to treat it?"

The employee carefully moved the chair back, saying, "It's not too serious, you'll be fine after a rest."

"What are you doing? Hurry up and go, don't delay things."

"That won't do."

Yu Miaomiao pulled her employee up and dragged her towards the laboratory. "Perfect timing. I have a friend in the lab. Let him give you a full check-up. You absolutely can't have any lasting side effects."

The employee was dragged to the laboratory by Yu Miaomiao in despair.

His original form is oxalis, a herbaceous plant that does not rely on strength, so no matter how much he struggles, he cannot escape.

The employees cried out for help, "Xiao Wang, Xiao Zhang, please help me!"

However, his colleagues were all of the same ilk: bullying the weak and fearing the strong, keeping their eyes down and not one of them standing up for himself.

Half an hour later, the news that an employee of the Public Opinion Department had contracted a strange "human allergy" spread throughout the entire Monster Department.

The employee covered his face and fled back from the lab, being mocked by several human employees along the way.

"I'm so sorry, my taste is disgusting."

"Hey, didn't you have a human allergy? How come you didn't have an attack when you saw me?"

I was even called over by my boss and given a dressing down, and my entire performance bonus for the month was deducted.

When he returned to his workstation, his eyes were vacant and he looked listless.

A colleague peeked over and said, "You always have such a sharp tongue, you've finally gotten yourself into trouble."

He asked through gritted teeth, "Who is that girl?"

"I don't know her name, but I see her often. I heard she's very capable and got into the Monster Club right after graduation."

"Get into the Monster Department?" He suddenly laughed heartily, remembering the new policy that was about to be released.

"She cares so much about that human, she must have signed a liability waiver. That means she'll never get into the Monster Club!"

Thinking of this, his bitterness vanished, and he began to work humming a song.

"This is what happens when you mingle with humans."

-

In the laboratory, several employees, seeing Yu Miaomiao exuding a cold aura, silently took a detour.

Only Hu Li, holding Yu Miaomiao's hand, comforted her, "Okay, Miaomiao, there are idiots like this everywhere, don't get angry at them."

Yu Miaomiao snorted coldly and said nothing.

Wu An called to urge her on, so she said goodbye to Hu Li and walked towards the Enforcement Division with Jiang Cheng.

On the way, Jiang Cheng suddenly spoke up, "Were you just standing up for me?"

Yu Miaomiao immediately replied, "I just simply don't like him."

Jiang Cheng stopped and turned to look at her, his eyes brimming with laughter. "Really?"

Yu Miaomiao succumbed to Jiang Chengyi's smiling gaze, and in a fit of despair, she said, "Fine, I admit it."

“I don’t want to hear you being insulted. I get very angry when I hear him say those things about you.”

She asked, "Aren't you angry?"

Jiang Cheng shook his head. "Just like you, I won't be angered by the insults of strangers. They are insignificant to me."

His voice carried an unusual lightness and joy, "On the contrary, I'm very happy."

Yu Miaomiao was taken aback. She realized that if someone insulted her like that, she would never get angry; she would just treat them as annoying flies buzzing around.

But why would she get so angry and make such a big fuss over someone's insults towards Jiang Cheng, just to teach that person a lesson?

Just like... just like Jiang Chengyi's behavior when she was being insulted online.

Before she could figure out why she was angry or why Jiang Chengyi was happy, Wu An's voice came.

"Miss Yu, you've arrived! Come in, come in! We've been waiting for you for a long time."

Wu An welcomed the two into the conference room.

There were four people sitting in the conference room: Liu Wenzheng, Xu Zhou, and a young man and woman with gray hair, honest expressions, and strange clothes.

Upon seeing Yu Miaomiao, or more accurately, the suitcase she was carrying, the two rushed over in surprise, opened the suitcase, and hugged Xiaobai, bursting into tears.

"Little White, Mommy finally found you, waaaaaah..."

"Bai Bai, Daddy is sorry, it's all Daddy's fault, waaaaaah..."

The two adults, disregarding their image, hugged the box and wailed loudly, tears streaming down their faces.

Little White waved its paws and pushed away its parents' faces; it really didn't want its beautiful fur to be covered in tears and snot.

If it hadn't sensed the close and familiar aura between the two people, it would have already attacked them with its claws.

The two cried for a long time before calming down with the comforting words of Wu An and Liu Wenzheng. However, one of them held Xiaobai's body and the other hugged Xiaobai's tail, unwilling to let go.

Jiang Chengyi and Yu Miaomiao also learned about the cause and effect of the matter through Liu Wenzheng's narration.

This snow leopard couple lived in the snow-capped mountains of southwestern X province. They fell in love freely, but because the monsters were not good at reproducing, they tried for decades and finally had a single offspring, which they naturally cherished and cared for with utmost care.

Two months ago, a monster broke into their tribe, claiming to be a "doctor" and offering free medical consultations. His medicine was very effective, and some old monsters' chronic illnesses were easily cured.

The "doctor" was shocked when he saw the little white baby in the couple's arms.

He said the cub suffered from a rare genetic disease and was doomed to die. He even showed them a promotional video about the disease using a small, glowing board, which matched the cub's various symptoms.

The couple panicked and took out all the wealth and treasures they had accumulated over hundreds of years to seek help from the doctor.

The doctor eventually agreed to help.

He found a dilapidated house, set up a protective barrier, and said that he would have to perform a ritual on Xiaobai inside the house for seven days to cure the disease.

For the seven-day monsters, it was just a blink of an eye, so they naturally agreed.

The light, smoke, and incantations inside the house continued for seven days, but no one came out. The snow leopard couple couldn't help but go inside, only to find the house empty except for a black box that was emitting light and sound.

They then realized they had been scammed and went out to look for their child, a search that lasted two whole months, until law enforcement officials contacted them.

At this point, Liu Wenzheng glanced at the couple who were still crying while holding Xiaobai, and added in a low voice:

"Their family has lived in the snow-capped mountains for generations and has never gone out. They have no idea about the changes in the outside world and still think it is ancient times."

"They don't know to call the police when they're looking for their children; they just hide and post notices or ask around."

"Their blood samples had not been entered into the DNA database. It was only after a team member saw a post on a local forum and thought the people in the photos looked strange that they were found."

The couple finally stopped crying, stood up sobbing, and thanked Yu Miaomiao again and again.

If she hadn't stopped them, they would have knelt on the ground and kowtowed a few times.

"Miss Yu, thanks to you, Xiaobai was able to return safely."

Xiao Bai's mother held Yu Miaomiao's hand tightly and said firmly, "From now on, whenever there is any need for our help, I will do my best."

To prevent them from doing anything shocking again, Yu Miaomiao accepted this solemn promise.

Xu Zhou then stood up and led Xiao Bai's parents and Xiao Bai to the laboratory for examination.

He looked excited, clearly having been looking forward to this moment for a long time.

Watching Xiaobai's parents leave, Yu Miaomiao finally asked another question, "What are they going to do with Xiaobai, calling it a 'medicinal catalyst'?"

Liu Wenzheng snorted coldly: "'Medicinal catalyst' is of course used to refine 'medicine'."
