Broken Interlude

"Excuse me, who are you?" Zhou Yu was lying on the hospital bed when she was startled by the sudden opening of the door. The next second, a strange woman rushed into the ward.

Her daughter, Xia Lian, came in with her. Her hair was in a mess for some reason, and there was a bright red handprint on her right cheek.

"Xiao Lian? What's wrong with you?"

Before Xia Lian could reply, the woman frowned and glanced into the ward. "What's your relationship with this brat?"

Zhou Yu was taken aback for a moment, but still answered, "I am her mother."

Upon hearing this, the woman's face contorted with rage, and she shouted towards the outside of the ward, "Everyone, come and judge this! Look what this family has done to my daughter!"

Her entrance was already quite loud, attracting the attention of many medical staff. Her shout brought almost everyone who could move around on that floor out.

Meanwhile, Yin Zhen, who was standing beside her, was extremely anxious, afraid of making things worse. She just grabbed the woman's arm, hoping to leave as soon as possible.

At the same time, his gaze towards Xia Lian was filled with countless complex emotions.

The woman, however, seemed ready to start a fight, yelling and spewing vulgarities in the ward, saying all sorts of nonsense.

Yin Zhen was portrayed as a victim who had been bullied by Xia Lian for many years, and the culprit was Xia Lian in this hospital room.

"You're talking nonsense! How could my daughter do such a thing!" Zhou Yu was a little anxious, and she spoke with some effort, but unexpectedly, this caused her to cough.

"I'm talking nonsense? Look what she did to my daughter!" With that, the woman pulled Yin Zhen over and showed everyone the bandages on her head.

Zhou Yu didn't know how to refute, and only felt more and more upset. She believed that her daughter would never do such a thing. Obedience and understanding were always the hallmarks of Xia Lian, but she really couldn't argue with others in front of her.

Fortunately, the onlookers on this floor all knew Xia Lian well and had heard that the patient in this ward had a very filial and sensible daughter.

“I know that child. He runs to the hospital every day to bring his mother food. He is a very filial child.”

"Yeah, it's unlikely she would bully a classmate, right? Is there some misunderstanding?"

"But the other girl did get hit on the head."

The discussion gradually shifted towards the possibility of a misunderstanding, with everyone feeling that there must be some details that the parties involved hadn't yet revealed.

As more and more people gathered around, more and more people spoke up to help. Zhou Yu looked at them with emotion, feeling that her daughter must have some hidden story that she hadn't told them.

When all eyes turned to Xia Lian, she was lying beside Zhou Yu's hospital bed, her gaze towards her mother filled with apology and complex emotions.

Hospitals are already full of things to deal with, and this situation, which resembled a medical dispute, had already been planned out. Medical staff called the police in advance and stood outside the ward to help control the scene.

Until the moment the police arrived at the ward, the girl choked back tears, knelt on the ground, and uttered the words that had been buried in her heart for three years:

"I've always been the one being bullied..."

After he finished speaking, the entire room fell silent.

Yin Zhen, in particular, turned deathly pale. When she saw the police come in, she realized that she could no longer hide her secret.

The woman stopped shouting because her daughter's expression seemed a little off.

The incident, which started as a medical dispute, quickly escalated into a school bullying incident, catching the police off guard. Nevertheless, they managed to bring all those involved back to the police station.

Only after their persistent questioning did everyone learn what this frail girl had gone through.

Countless wounds and scars, bruises fade but new ones appear, countless verbal attacks and insults, hair cut into pieces.

She silently bore it all alone.

When Zhou Yu learned the truth, she was so angry that she fainted. She never imagined that her daughter's life at school would be such a living hell.

The smiles in front of her were all forced.

Zhou Yu's condition was already serious, and this sudden surge of anxiety made her even weaker.

Those who bullied Xia Lian soon got their comeuppance, and Xia Lian didn't go to school even once in the last half month.

I spend all day at the hospital with my mother, watching her face grow thinner and thinner, but I can't say a word.

The day after the middle school entrance exam ended.

Zhou Yu has left this world forever, and he has also left Xia Lian forever.

Perhaps she had become numb; Xia Lian couldn't even shed a single tear. Ever since she told everyone what had happened, her body had become like a walking corpse.

Is my mother's illness getting worse because of me?

Not many people attended Zhou Yu's funeral; it seemed that no one remembered that a gentle mother had ever existed in the world.

The doctor had told her that her mother's illness was beyond saving and had nothing to do with Xia Lian, and that she shouldn't feel guilty.

But when she touched her mother's already cold face, Xia Lian's heart shattered, breaking into teardrops that turned into two tear streaks hanging on her cheeks.

"Mother……"

She cried silently, feeling more and more distressed as she cried, even though she had been calling her own name just a day before.

Xia Lian stopped crying only after her mother was buried; it was perhaps the last time she cried.

Since that day, she seemed to have lost all vitality, her face never showing any emotion again, and her once clear eyes became empty and lifeless.

It resembled a stagnant pool.

To outsiders, she was like a porcelain doll that couldn't express any emotions.
