The atmosphere tonight is very different, or perhaps it's just Wenmo's perception that it's different. At least in the room now, looking at the extra pillow beside him, he has a strange feeling in his heart.
If you do a quick mental calculation, it's been two months since the two of them met and started living together. Two months isn't a long time, but it's not short either. Long enough for Wen Mo to fall for the girl beside him, but short enough for Xia Lian to still not notice his true feelings.
But when he finally realized that he really liked his cousin, he didn't feel much joy; instead, he felt more upset.
He had also seen other people dating, and they looked so good together, harmonious and loving, both of them a perfect match.
I remember attending a wedding when I was a child. People said that the couple standing there were the perfect match, and it would be a shame if they didn't get married.
But when it's your turn, the situation is different.
It's not that Wenmo doesn't want to be in a relationship; on the contrary, he had received several love letters before, but he rejected them all in the end.
Because Wen Mo didn't think it was love, he had only met the girl who wrote the love letter a few times, and he couldn't even say her name.
But now things are different; I've actually found someone I like.
But the hurdle in his heart kept weighing him down. Only then did he realize how important his father's words were, but was it too late to think about it now?
Wen Mo gave a bitter laugh, then pulled the blanket over his head. The stuffy heat might make him dizzy for a while, but tonight's events were far beyond his capacity to bear, causing him to give up thinking about it several times.
He is a rather traditional person who believes that if you're going to date, you should be thinking about marrying the other person. This idea was ridiculed by his classmates twice, but Wenmo didn't take it seriously.
He never expected to be so pathetic. He had previously thought that the flutter in his heart was just a result of dependence, but tonight he couldn't find any reason to refute himself.
The feeling of being suffocated under the covers wasn't pleasant. Wenmo buried his head in the pillow, and the throbbing in his heart made him unconsciously call out.
"Xiao Lian..."
"What's wrong? I'm here."
Xia Lian pushed the door open and came in with a strange expression, holding the clothes she had already changed out of.
"Holy crap...!" Wen Mo quickly poked his head out from under the covers. The temperature difference between the blankets and the outside world made him feel dizzy for a moment. He looked up and saw Xia Lian already walking towards the balcony.
"Are you done washing?"
The girl nodded gently, put the clothes in the laundry basket on the balcony, and prepared to wash them tomorrow. After doing all this, she returned to her bedroom.
“Just now, Wen Mo called… my name.” Xia Lian lay obediently half-lying in the quilt, her body still warm from her recent shower, her little feet gently pressed against Wen Mo’s legs, soft and yielding.
"It's nothing, it's nothing, I just suddenly wanted to call your name, haha..." Wen Mo laughed awkwardly, scratching his cheek helplessly, while avoiding looking at her.
Perhaps it was the strange feeling in his heart, but the girl who had just come out of the bath looked very warm, and the fragrance of the shower gel kept wafting into his nose.
Wen Mo's Adam's apple bobbed, and he subconsciously swallowed lightly.
He was wearing long pajamas, and he had specifically chosen the safest and most conservative one when he bought them, but even so, Wen Mo still turned his head away.
That said, something was already off when the two of them were sleeping together, so isn't it a bit too late to realize it now...?
"Wenmo, what's wrong?"
Xia Lian was a little confused, so she moved a little closer behind him.
"It's okay, let's just go to sleep. Let's go to bed early tonight." Wen Mo casually replied, not really knowing how to face her.
Her mind was a jumble of thoughts. All Wenmo wanted was for the rain outside to be loud enough to drown out her own heartbeat.
Just then, a small, fair hand touched his chest and stopped at his heart, causing him to tremble.
"What's wrong?"
Wen Mo chuckled awkwardly. The room lights were still on, and he could clearly see the confused expression on Xia Lian's face.
"Wenmo's heart is beating so fast."
"...It's probably just my imagination. My heart has always been beating pretty fast."
"Really?"
"When have I ever lied to you?" Wen Mo smiled, feigning composure, and reached out to press the switch for the overhead light by the bedside. "I'm turning off the light. Let's sleep."
As soon as he finished speaking, the room went dark.
The room windows were not closed. Although the weather is getting cooler now, the room would feel stuffy if the windows were closed for a long time, so it's good to let some air out.
The light rain outside created a white noise-like atmosphere that gradually calmed Wenmo's heart, allowing him to finally spend time with the girl beside him as usual.
Being too nervous is unpleasant, especially when the girl you like is sleeping next to you.
"Xiao Lian."
A sound broke the silence of the room. Wen Mo stared at the dark ceiling, his brown eyes seemingly lost in thought.
"Um?"
Xia Lian slightly raised her head, her arm still resting on Wen Mo's body. The girl was used to sleeping with him in her arms, always feeling a sense of security that way.
"What is our relationship?" Wen Mo suddenly asked.
Turning to the side, I could face the girl in front of me directly. The only light source was the bright moonlight from outside, and I could vaguely see Xia Lian's eyes.
"Cousins".
Is there anything else?
"Hmm... let's still be friends." Xia Lian gave her answer after thinking for a while.
After he finished speaking, there was no more sound in the room. As if he had found his answer, Wen Mo pursed his lips, and the breeze that occasionally blew in from outside the window calmed his mind.
After a long silence, he finally uttered only one word, "Hmm."
Xia Lian didn't know why he suddenly asked these questions, but she could tell that Wen Mo was feeling a little different at the moment. However, she couldn't quite put her finger on it, so she simply rubbed her cheek against the back of his hand.
The soft touch came from his hand. Wen Mo squinted and reached out to stroke the girl's head, as if that would make him feel a little better.
What did you wish for today?
"I……"
"Don't tell me, just let me guess."
Wen Mo remained calm, without giving much thought, and casually gave an answer.
"Want to eat cake every day?"
Upon hearing this, the girl nodded.
"Did I guess that accurately? Well, it seems I'm quite good." Wen Mo smiled faintly, or perhaps calling it a smile was a bit of a stretch; it was more like the corners of his mouth were slightly raised.
After a long while, there was no more sound in the room.
Xia Lian gazed at Wen Mo's face, lost in thought.
Once she was sure he was really asleep, she quietly moved closer to Wen Mo and said gently, "I'm sorry..."
Although girls know that lying is wrong, they also have their own little thoughts.
No one could guess what Xia Lian truly wished for; perhaps only she herself knew.
After all, wishes won't come true if you say them out loud...
