"Stay for a simple meal. It's not easy for you two to come all this way."
"No need, thank you for your kindness, we already ate just now." Wen Mo said goodbye, pulling Xia Lian to the doorway.
I was just here to take a look around, so it wouldn't be right to bother them any further.
As evening approached, gusts of cold winter wind blew against their faces, stinging their cheeks, prompting them to pull their scarves up a little more at the same time.
"Let's go to the hotel and drop off our things. Speaking of which, shouldn't we have gone to the hotel to drop off our luggage when we first arrived..." Wen Mo muttered, suddenly feeling a little silly.
"Um."
Xia Lian nodded slightly, but didn't seem to care much about what Wen Mo was saying; her thoughts were still on her old home.
"We can come back and visit again when we have time, there will be a next time." Wen Mo understood her feelings and continued walking forward as if it were nothing.
The room I booked is until noon tomorrow, which is perfect timing to have lunch before going to the cemetery to sweep the tombs, and then take a bus home in the afternoon.
Wen Mo easily hailed a Didi ride on his phone, glancing back at Xia Lian's mood from time to time while waiting.
Fortunately, the girl seemed to have let it go, as her expression remained as calm as before.
When the car arrived, Wen Mo opened the door first, and then got in after Xia Lian got in.
Looking at the sky gradually darkening outside the window and the lights slowly rising, Wen Mo's eyes flickered slightly. "Have you stayed in a hotel before?"
Perhaps feeling a bit bored, he took the initiative to bring up a topic.
"No." Xia Lian shook her head.
I've never left the city since I was a child, so there's no need for me to stay in a hotel. The only time I traveled a long distance was when we moved from the countryside to the county town, and it was from that time that my mother got sick.
"It might be quite novel for you," Wen Mo joked with a smile, completely ignoring the strange expression on the driver's face.
The driver's lips trembled slightly as he glanced at the two little ones in the rearview mirror.
They all look so young, but why are they talking about such mature topics?! Where did they even get to? They're talking about booking hotel rooms, oh my god!
Kids these days...tsk tsk tsk.
Perhaps seeing through his thoughts, Wen Mo glanced at Xia Lian, then looked at the driver's expression in front, and suddenly had an interesting idea.
"Please don't misunderstand, we are cousins." After saying that, he took Xia Lian's small hand and showed her his most intimate side.
Upon hearing this, the driver suddenly realized what was going on.
It startled me; I thought they were up to something. The two of them were staying in a hotel.
Seeing his master's reaction, Wen Mo really wanted to laugh. The highest level of lying is to lie with the truth. What he just said was flawless.
"You two are on vacation?"
“Yes, we just arrived this morning.” Wen Mo scratched Xia Lian’s chin, causing her to squint her eyes slightly, like a melting kitten clinging to him.
Even his previous explanation was starting to sound off.
These cousins are way too clingy... They almost seem like they're about to kiss.
While waiting at the red light, the driver secretly glanced at the rearview mirror again, but when he saw the two people's nonchalant expressions, he felt his entire worldview collapse.
"Aren't you guys going a bit too far...?"
"Oh, it's okay, we're doing this normally, don't worry." Before the driver could finish complaining, Wen Mo immediately took over and explained, his calm expression revealing no flaws.
"Are you really alright?"
"Nothing could possibly happen, you can rest assured." Wen Mo's expression remained as calm as ever, and he almost believed his own words.
The driver pressed the accelerator with some skepticism, but he just couldn't calm down.
Is there something wrong with my worldview? Or am I just part of the game?
They didn't understand the problem even after they got off the bus, leaving the driver bewildered in the wind.
"Sometimes it's quite funny to see other people's surprised expressions." Wen Mo only dared to show his barely suppressed smile after the driver drove away.
Looking at him, Xia Lian suddenly felt that her boyfriend was like a villain, and she felt inexplicably scared.
"Wenmo, that's bad."
"What's wrong with me? I wasn't telling the truth."
Wen Mo shrugged indifferently, not feeling anything was wrong, and pulled Xia Lian step by step into the hotel lobby.
"Hello, I have an appointment."
He took out his ID card, and the receptionist checked it before handing Wen Mo a room key. But before leaving, she glanced at Xia Lian beside her one more time.
The room was on the fifth floor. There weren't many good hotels in this small county town, so we just found a chain hotel with decent reviews and made do for one night.
The furnishings inside were much the same as those in a regular hotel, with white sheets and a large quilt, a bedside table and a wall-mounted TV, as well as a fairly spacious bathroom.
Wen Mo threw the bag off his back and placed it on the bedside table before collapsing onto the bed and bouncing back and forth a few times.
"Want to try pouncing on me? It's fun."
He waved and smiled, signaling Xia Lian to jump on.
Xia Lian froze for a second, then, like a child, she lay back on the bed and buried herself in the quilt.
For dinner, we decided to order takeout and grab something quick. We were both quite tired today, having walked a lot and taken a long ride in a Didi (ride-hailing service).
Xia Lian took off her sneakers, and her two little feet, covered in white socks, seemed to still be warm. She sat on the edge of the bed like a good baby, swinging her little feet back and forth.
Watching this scene, Wen Mo was somewhat lost in thought, subconsciously swallowing hard. When he came to his senses, he felt that he was being rather perverted and quickly looked away.
Back then, she kept saying she didn't like feet, but now she's changed her mind...?
Humans are fickle creatures.
Ultimately, before, I had only observed from afar and rarely had the opportunity to actually hold onto it, but now, in this situation... it seems like I can do whatever I want, right?
The room was unusually quiet.
Xia Lian doesn't talk much, which is normal. On the other hand, Wen Mo is like a steam engine, his whole body is hot after taking off his coat.
"Wenmo?"
"Ah, ah...?" Wen Mo wiped the drool from his mouth and subconsciously responded.
"You've been looking at me for a long time."
"Oh, I'm so sorry, I was just engrossed in what I was watching." He scratched his head and apologized sheepishly, quickly looking away and turning to take out his phone to order takeout.
But my heart just wouldn't stop beating.
We were just sitting on the same bed as usual! Why did the atmosphere suddenly become so... suggestive?
"It's a bit hot."
Xia Lian murmured something and took off her coat, revealing a pure white sweater underneath.
