Chapter 239 Scheming

Wen Mo, who had been scared half to death just now, finally came to his senses and listened carefully before he understood what the girl was saying.

He rubbed his forehead, pinched his aching brow, looked up at Xia Lian's innocent face, and beckoned her with his hand, asking, "How did you know this word?"

Just a minute ago, Wenmo was so frightened by those two words that her face turned pale. But after thinking about it carefully, she realized that something was wrong. Lianbao was still clueless about the meaning of love, so how could she understand what breaking up meant?

Xia Lian tilted her head and pointed to the phone that Wen Mo was holding in his hand. There was a video in the history that she had only watched half of.

"video."

"Videos?" Wen Mo was taken aback, flipped his phone over, and looked at him strangely. "You've even learned how to watch video apps?"

"I take a look occasionally."

Xia Lian nodded, her expression becoming quite relaxed when talking about video apps. Before she had her own phone, she had no idea that such interesting things existed in the world. Every video was incredibly novel, and she could easily become engrossed in them every time she watched one.

Wen Mo pursed his lips, gripped his phone, and scrolled through his previous viewing history.

Sure enough, the video I only saw halfway through had the word "breakup" in big letters on the cover, and the video was about relationship problems between couples.

Xia Lian leaned closer, her two large, blinking eyes staring straight at her. "Break up? What do you mean?"

She asked this question because she genuinely couldn't understand why there were so many sad comments under the video, comments that she couldn't comprehend.

"...It means something bad, like the couple not planning to stay together." Wen Mo subconsciously took a step back, feeling a little flustered being stared at by those clear, big eyes.

Xia Lian is completely ignorant about the principles of interpersonal relationships, so Wen Mo will slowly teach her these principles, but he never intended to expose her to negative news.

If it weren't for this video, she might never have heard the word "breakup" in her life.

Upon hearing this, Xia Lian looked puzzled. She clutched the familiar hem of her clothes with her small hand, gently rubbing it with her fingers. She lowered her head slightly, then looked up again, seemingly at a loss.

"Can't...be together?"

"Yes, couples who use this word usually don't plan to continue being together, which is why they bring up breaking up."

Why don't they get married?

"...Couples can't just get married as long as they're dating. If that were the case, the civil affairs bureau would be overflowing with people." Wen Mo patiently explained, swiping his phone screen to search for the word "breakup" in the browser and showing her the search results.

However, Xia Lian's mind was not on her phone at all. Instead, she stared wide-eyed, her eyes trembling slightly, especially when she heard Wen Mo's words. Even her eyelashes seemed to be trying to absorb new knowledge.

She didn't speak for a while, seemingly understanding just how heavy the words "break up" truly were.

Wenmo shook her head helplessly. At this moment, she finally understood what breaking up really meant, but her reaction was much stronger than Lianbao's.

I never imagined that one day I would be so frightened by just two simple words that my face would turn pale. I had a strange feeling of wanting to cry and feeling a pain in my heart, as if something very important was about to disappear from my life.

Fortunately, it was all just a misunderstanding.

It's alright...it's alright.

After a long while, neither of them spoke again. The breakfast in the pot smelled burnt, but Wen Mo ignored it, picked up the spatula and casually scooped the blackened fried egg out of the pot, feeling inexplicably irritated.

This morning was anything but uneventful. He took out a plate, put the fried eggs on it, called out to them, and then sat down at the table to eat his breakfast. The burnt fried eggs were in his bowl, while the slightly better ones were on Xia Lian's plate.

"Let's eat breakfast first. You'll have the energy to think things through after you eat." Wen Mo's voice was a little hoarse, perhaps because he hadn't drunk much water since he had just woken up. His tone was low but deep.

Xia Lian didn't respond. She gripped the chopsticks tightly in her small hands, and her originally clear eyes seemed to have become somewhat listless. The chopsticks poked several holes in the fried egg on the plate, revealing the cooked yolk.

"Just now……"

"Hmm?" Wen Mo bit the end of his chopsticks and looked up in confusion.

All I could see was Xia Lian with her eyes lowered, her eyelashes trembling slightly, her lips flat, and a strand of overly long bangs falling between her eyebrows. She raised her eyes cautiously and asked, "Does what you just said still stand?"

"Huh?" Wen Mo was taken aback. "What did you say?"

Xia Lian leaned forward, her bangs brushing against the breeze from the window, and her previously obscured vision was cleared again.

"Marriage...that phrase."

Her slender, pale fingers intertwined carefully beneath her, as if clinging to a sliver of hope that Wen Mo's words still held true.

Wen Mo was stunned, and after thinking for a while, he looked embarrassed.

Does the marriage vow still stand?

I honestly don't know if it counts... After all, it was just something I made up on the spot. I was really flustered by Xia Lian's "break up" just now, and I made the promise in a desperate attempt to find a solution.

Wen Mo sincerely assured himself that he had never been this flustered in his life. He might have panicked when he took his father's treasured red wine to a beer bar when he was a child, but that was nothing compared to the misunderstanding he had just experienced.

In particular, Xia Lian always spoke with a calm and expressionless face, and you couldn't tell anything from her face, as if she was saying the words "break up" very seriously.

Holding her forehead, the two at the dinner table fell silent for a while, seemingly considering Wen Mo's difficulties. Xia Lian didn't ask any further questions, but instead ate the fried eggs on her plate in small bites.

After finishing the fried eggs, she took a tissue to wipe her mouth, her lifeless eyes remaining expressionless. She looked at Wen Mo and whispered:

"It's okay if we don't get married right away."

"As long as we don't break up, that's fine..."

"Being together all the time is enough."

She raised her eyes, her gaze filled with a hint of hope, her lips slightly pursed. Perhaps she was truly frightened by the thought of breaking up, for she offered no further explanation at that moment.

Wen Mo listened quietly to Xia Lian's innermost thoughts without ever looking up. After a long while, he finally made a move, sitting there like a statue.

"well……"

He sighed softly, stood up, and smiled, as if to express his helplessness. He walked to the opposite table and gently hugged Xia Lian's head.

Xia Lian's emotions were written in her heart and expressed in her actions. For example, at this moment, she subconsciously hugged Wen Mo back, holding his back and silently inhaling the fragrance in his arms.

Seemingly having hugged her enough, Wen Mo released her, gave her a mysterious smile, turned around and went back into the room to rummage through something. After a while, he came out with a small bag in his hand.

"Here, take this."

Xia Lian was taken aback, and subconsciously took it with both hands, her expression puzzled. "Wen Mo, what is this...?"

Wen Mo shrugged helplessly and rubbed her head.

"My household registration book and ID card are inside. When I reach the legal age, we'll go get the marriage certificate."
