The speeches didn't last long. Various school leaders said a few words in turn and then returned to their offices. No one wanted to stand there and talk nonsense in the sweltering heat.
The principal, in particular, crumpled up his prepared speech into a ball and stuffed it into his pocket. After loudly reciting a few lines to welcome the new students, he stepped down from the stage on his own.
The brief welcome party officially ended once all the new students had returned to their classrooms.
"It's so hot! It's so hot!" Yin Tao stuck out her tongue, fanning herself with her hands and breathing heavily. "Luckily, the speech was relatively short, otherwise I would have fainted if I had stood there any longer."
"Are you a dog, sticking out your tongue and panting?"
Ye Qingzhou returned to her seat and gave her a disdainful look.
"You're the dog! I'm just cooling down." Yin Tao snorted unhappily, then lazily stretched. "Go home and enjoy the air conditioning!"
Perhaps because school starts tomorrow, everyone in the class is in a state of excitement and trepidation, talking about school one after another.
Xia Lian kept her head down since returning to the classroom, her expression unreadable, as if she were completely stunned.
"Xiao Lian, Xiao Lian?"
Just then, a voice came from the side. Yin Tao looked at her with some concern. Xia Lian hadn't been showing any emotion since earlier. "What's wrong with you? Why are you spacing out?"
Xia Lian then came to her senses, her innocent big eyes revealing nothing of her thoughts. "It's nothing."
"It's good that you're alright, hehe. How are you going to get home later? If it's on the same route, we can go together?" Yin Tao leaned close to her face and said with a grin.
"Cousin, you'll pick me up."
She remembered Wen Mo saying that he would wait for her at the school gate when she went home.
"Oh, I see." Yin Tao lay bored on the table, her eyes constantly scanning her. "I feel like... Xiao Lian seems to be very clingy to him."
The girl in front of me looked thin and small, and I couldn't see any other expression on her face. Upon closer inspection, she looked like someone who could be easily bullied.
The two had known each other for less than an hour, and Xia Lian probably hadn't said more than ten sentences in total, five of which were about her so-called cousin.
"Um?"
Xia Lian tilted her head in confusion, seemingly puzzled.
"Oh, it's nothing. I just talked too much." Yin Tao smiled playfully and winked.

But before she could finish speaking, Xia Lian suddenly raised her head, her eyes fixed on the clock on the wall, "Time's up..."
She didn't know when it had arrived at the time Wen Mo had arranged with her. Although only a few seconds had passed, she inexplicably wanted to see Wen Mo as soon as possible.
See you tomorrow.
"So soon?" Yin Tao was a little surprised, but she still waved gently with a smile on her face. "Okay, see you tomorrow then."
Xia Lian nodded and was about to take a step away when she inexplicably turned back. She took a few light steps to stand in front of Yin Tao and the other person, staring intently at them with unreadable emotions in her eyes.
Yin Tao felt a little flustered by the stare, wondering what was going on. "Um... what's wrong, Xiao Lian?"
Just as she was about to continue asking questions, she felt a soft object in front of her.
The girl in front of her gently hugged her.
"Huh? Huh?" She was stunned.
Nevertheless, she still instinctively hugged back.
After hugging for several seconds, Xia Lian slowly let go, while Yin Tao was still in a daze.
Xia Lian then said goodbye once more and left the classroom.
The two watched her departing figure and remained silent for a while.
"This girl... is really quite interesting." Recalling the warmth she felt earlier, Yin Tao scratched her cheek somewhat shyly as she watched her leave.
Ye Qingzhou pursed her lips, a hint of reminiscence flashing in her eyes.
"What are you thinking about? What are you so engrossed in?"
"It's nothing, I was just thinking about things from the past." Ye Qingzhou nodded thoughtfully, resting his chin on his hand. "When we graduated from junior high, you rushed up to me and cried your heart out. I had almost forgotten about it, but thankfully it reminded me just now."
"...I hate you."
...
Principal's Office.
Wenmer returned the formulaic speech draft.
The principal didn't even glance at it, casually crumpled the speech into a ball, and threw it into the trash can.
He raised his head, looking at Wen Mo with interest. "I say, you've never given a speech on stage before, have you? What's gotten into you today?"
The welcome speech for new students at Linchuan Middle School never includes a segment where the student council president goes on stage. Usually, the principal and other leaders just say a few words and then the class dismisses.
Moreover, Wen Mo, the student council president, rarely shows his face in front of students. He leaves any tasks that require him to appear in public to the vice president. He rarely even goes to the student council office; he's just a figurehead with the title of president.
“There’s no harm in helping with the ‘Anti-Bullying Education’ materials, it’s for the sake of our school’s atmosphere.” Wen Mo sat down on the sofa next to him with a smile, showing no seriousness even in the office.
"Tomorrow is the start of the senior year exams. Aren't you going back to review?" the principal asked without looking up.
He didn't care what the kid was thinking; as long as Wenmo's grades remained stable, he could do whatever he wanted.
"Just take the test casually, and if I can pass, I'll be fine."
Wen Mo yawned, put his hands behind his head, got up and walked out of the office. "Then I'll be going now. Thank you for today."
The principal raised an eyebrow, watching him leave, and then added, "Didn't you say you didn't want to be the student council president anymore? Have you changed your mind now?"
Upon hearing this, he stopped in his tracks.
"I've changed my mind. Let me serve for another year."
The position of student council president is still useful, even though the student council doesn't have much power. It's better than nothing, and occasionally it can be used as a disciplinary committee member.
As long as he remains the student council president, no one in the school will bully Xia Lian. Today, he has given the freshmen a taste of his power.
To be honest, he doesn't like being in the public eye, and he was a little nervous giving his first speech on stage today, but overall the effect was still good.
"I never thought I'd have selfish thoughts one day."
Wenmo is someone who hates trouble and prefers things to be simple. However, now, if it can make his cousin happier at school, he doesn't mind if his own affairs are a little more complicated.
He shook his head with a wry smile and walked away from the principal's office.
