Chapter 45 Protective Desire

The girl's eyes lost their brightness, becoming melancholy and confused, sinking into deep despair.

Seeing her like this, Wen Mo felt as if his heart had been gripped tightly and slapped, a strange heaviness lingering in his heart that he couldn't shake off for a long time.

It was like a sharp sword piercing his heart.

Xia Lian hugged her knees, buried her head between her legs, and mumbled, "I'm sorry... I made you feel annoyed..."

"I don't know how to get along with my friends..."

"I don't understand how to maintain a sense of distance either..."

Her mother hadn't taught her these things, and it was the same at her previous school. Everyone else got along well, but she was the only one who was isolated.

All she could do was obediently follow orders and do whatever others told her to do.

Xia Lian tried her best to get along with her classmates, but even so, they still didn't seem to accept this introverted girl.

"That laugh is disgusting."

"Stay away from me, you're filthy, tsk."

Despite being bullied and in pain all over, she would still force a smile despite her fear. But since then, the girl has never smiled again.

"I will be good, please don't leave me... okay?"

At this moment, Xia Lian reached out and grabbed Wen Mo's sleeve, raising her eyes to look at him pitifully, her face filled with pity and helplessness, like a little animal afraid of being abandoned by its owner.

Wen Mo opened his mouth slightly, and through her lifeless eyes, he could read the grievance and frustration hidden in them. Even though she was so careful in every move, she still hoped that he would not leave her.

Only at this moment did the man truly understand what he wanted to do.

After a moment of silence, he slowly raised his head.

"Just pretend I didn't say anything," Wen Mo said, his gaze becoming much deeper.

"Huh...?" Xia Lian, who was still feeling down, suddenly raised her eyes and looked over with a puzzled expression.

"Um."

Wenmo smiled and patted her head.

I've figured it out.

He didn't know what role he was playing, but he didn't care. Wen Mo only knew that he wanted Xia Lian to be happy and content, and that was enough. As for all that other bullshit "distance," to hell with it.

As long as Xia Lian is happy, we can ignore the opinions and gossip of others.

“From now on, we’ll continue to get along as before. You don’t need to change yourself, and I will never leave you.” Wen Mo said, gently tapping her forehead. The heavy atmosphere from before had completely dissipated.

"Really?"

Xia Lian said slowly, her face still showing some confusion, but her mood had clearly brightened a bit.

"When have I ever lied to you?"

She stared blankly at Wen Mo for a long while, then leaned forward, her eyes regaining some of their sparkle. "Can we hold hands in the future...?"

"sure."

"Where's a hug?"

"Mmm, hug me however you like!"

"Then, shall we sleep together...?"

"Uh... sleeping together occasionally is fine for building a relationship, but we can't sleep together too often." After a moment's thought, Wen Mo gave an affirmative answer.

Before he could finish speaking, a familiar warmth enveloped him.

"There's no need to be in such a hurry," Wen Mo said with a smile, gently stroking the back of her head with his right hand.

In the city, on a hazy, ordinary night, they embraced each other tightly.

The moment he hugged her, the girl completely relaxed, rubbing her soft face against Wen Mo's chest, feeling a little ticklish.

"Don't do that in public," he gently reminded her, inhaling the intoxicating fragrance of Xia Lian's hair.

Several minutes later, Xia Lian finally released her hands from his waist. When she raised her head, her delicate, expressionless face was flushed with a few blushes.

Wenmo stared at the scene in astonishment.

So you can blush too?

I thought she was emotionless no matter what she did, but this attitude is really rare.

Seemingly noticing that her cheeks were burning, Xia Lian reached out and covered both sides of her face, lowered her head, and her eyes trembled slightly.

"I'm going back to my room..."

After uttering those words, she fled back to Wenmo's room as if escaping a disaster, though she would occasionally peek her head out.

"Okay, I got it." Wen Mo scratched his head, looking at her departing figure with a strange expression.

However, after resolving one of my worries, I felt much refreshed.

"Go take a shower."

...

"Are you asleep?" When Wen Mo returned to the room, more than ten minutes had passed, and the light was still on, as if they were waiting for him to come in.

"Already asleep."

A soft response came from inside the blankets.

"You can still talk while you're asleep, that's pretty impressive." Wen Mo's lips curled up slightly as he turned off the light and sat down on his bed.

Xia Lian, hiding under the covers, relaxed a little after sensing some movement next to her.

"Go to sleep early, you have class tomorrow," he said casually, shifting his body a little to the side.

Although she kept saying she wanted to go to bed early, Wenmo subconsciously took out her phone and played with it for a while, planning to go to sleep after she got sleepy.

"Um?"

The distance that was originally in the middle was gone, and Xia Lian had leaned against him without him noticing, her head resting on his shoulder.

"If you can't sleep, you can play on your phone for a while; maybe that will help you fall asleep," Wen Mo couldn't help but say.
