Chapter 30 Beside You

"Yes, it's good to have a clean-cut haircut." He couldn't help but reach out and stroke Xia Lian's hair, enjoying its silky smooth texture. "How long have you been growing this hair?"

This was the first time Wenmer had ever seen such long hair; it was almost as tall as a small child.

Xia Lian paused, pursed her lips, and pondered carefully. After a few seconds, she simply replied, "I forgot. It's been... a very, very long time."

"Don't you like getting your hair cut? Or do you not trust the hair salons outside?" He teased, holding Xia Lian's hair. Although the girl looked frail and sickly, her hair was surprisingly good.

Upon hearing this, she shook her head.

"Getting a haircut hurts."

"Oh? Why does it hurt when you get a haircut?" Wen Mo asked, somewhat surprised.

However, when he heard the next sentence, Wen Mo's expression immediately turned cold.

“My former classmates said my hair was too ugly and offered to help me cut it.”

Xia Lian gestured to illustrate the scene, each cut was made without hesitation, and each time large clumps of hair fell down. Wen Mo could even imagine their disgusting faces at the time.

This isn't helping with a haircut; it's deliberately cutting it haphazardly...

Xia Lian, however, spoke as if nothing had happened, as if she weren't the protagonist of the whole story. Only at the end did her body tremble slightly.

Listening to her description, Wen Mo felt a pang of heartache, his heart pounding with anger, and his face darkening like a storm cloud.

He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself down, and put on a gentle expression. His pupils trembled slightly as he reached out and brushed her bangs aside.

Beneath the thick bangs, a pair of eyes filled with unease and fear were revealed, and the owner of those eyes looked up weakly at Wen Mo.

"Wenmo..."

Wen Mo didn't speak, but reached out and gently stroked her cheek, his eyes full of heartache. "It must have hurt a lot... back then."

Feeling the warmth of Wen Mo's palm against her cheek, Xia Lian pursed her lips slightly and lowered her eyes. "It hurts... and it looks awful..."

After the haircut, their disgusting laughter lingered in Xia Lian's mind, making it hard for her to breathe.

Xia Lian, who already hated mirrors, was forced to stare at her reflection. When she saw her expressionless face and messy hair, she felt a spasm in her stomach and vomited on the spot, which earned her a few kicks from the girls.

Just as Xia Lian was immersed in her memories, she suddenly felt a weight in front of her. When she came to her senses, Wen Mo was already hugging her.

Wen Mo hugged him tightly. Compared to the hug at the school gate before, this hug was filled with more emotion. Heartache and anger lingered in his heart for a long time.

"Let's not cut it anymore, let's not cut it anymore."

He was somewhat saddened, and his voice was choked with emotion as he said, "I'm sorry, I made you think of something sad."

Even though she's so upset, why is she still expressionless?

Xia Lian felt the warmth in his arms, closed her eyes, and wrapped her arms around his back.

“It’s okay.” She pressed her cheek against Wenmo’s. “I’m not in pain anymore… Don’t worry about me.”

A moment of silence fell over the room as they comforted each other.

"Wen Mo, don't apologize." Xia Lian buried her head in his chest. She liked this feeling; it always made her feel safe. "If it's Wen Mo... he can help cut it."

Although she was still terrified of getting her hair cut, Xia Lian wouldn't feel any fear if Wen Mo helped her cut it.

He was silent for a moment, then patted Xia Lian's back. Her soft body was pressed against his chest. He tried to force a smile to ease the tension. "Aren't you worried that my cooking is bad?"

“I believe you, Winmer.”

She nodded; Xia Lian now trusted Wen Mo completely.

With her words, Wen Mo breathed a sigh of relief and led her to the living room.

Not long after, Xia Lian sat nervously on the sofa, while Wen Mo behind her held a pair of scissors in a state of readiness.

"...Has it started...?"

Xia Lian looked somewhat uneasy, fidgeting with her fingers helplessly.

"It'll be quick, don't worry." Wen Mo let out a long breath, his gaze serious. "Don't worry about cutting you. If the scissors touch even an inch of your skin, I'll cut my finger right here and now..."

"No, you don't have to do that...!"

Wenmo's words only made her more afraid, except that the object of her fear had changed from herself to Wenmo's fingers.

"Then I'll begin."

"Uh-huh……"

She closed her eyes, like a lamb to the slaughter, as the "snip" of Wen Mo's scissors rang out repeatedly, and a few strands of black hair slowly fell to the ground.

A few minutes later, Wen Mo stopped what he was doing and slowly exhaled, "All done."

Upon hearing this, Xia Lian quietly opened her eyes. Because she hadn't looked in a mirror, she didn't know what she looked like.

"Wenmo, so fast."

"I just thinned it out a bit," he said with a smile, then took out a hair tie and skillfully tied the hair up. "It'll be perfect once it's tied up again."

"Wen Mohui, tying your hair?"

"I learned how to tie it by watching videos before," he explained casually. A moment later, a big, high ponytail appeared on the back of Xia Lian's head.

Wenmo walked up to her and carefully examined her, occasionally letting out a sound of admiration.

Do you mind looking in the mirror?

He had noticed that his cousin didn't like mirrors for some reason when they were shopping for clothes at the mall before, but today, in order to let Xia Lian see her new look, he still mustered up the courage to ask her.
