A long moon hangs in the bright sky; the night is deep.
The summer moon is exceptionally clear, and slivers of moonlight stream into the room through the window, giving the room a mysteriously hazy feel after the lights are turned off.
Wenmo rested his hands behind his head, his eyes opening and closing intermittently, tossing and turning in bed, unable to fall asleep.
He casually pulled out his phone from beside his pillow. The light from the lit screen was a bit glaring, so he squinted and glanced at it. "It's 12:30..."
It was already past midnight; people would usually be asleep by this time.
He sat up in bed, his right hand supporting his forehead, feeling as if so much had happened that day that it all felt unreal.
"There's someone else in the house, really...?"
He muttered to himself, unable to resist his curiosity, so he clung to the edge of the bed, cautiously peeking out little by little to see what was happening below—
The girl was fast asleep.
It seemed that she was too tired today. Since the moment the lights were turned off, there was no sound from Xia Lian, only the faint sound of her breathing beside her pillow.
Her long, flowing hair was hidden behind her back, and the moonlight shone on the girl's cheeks. Her sleeping face looked adorable because of its tranquility.
What was originally a pure and beautiful scene was marred by the girl's slightly furrowed brows, which added a touch of brokenness. Her body trembled slightly from time to time, and although she was asleep, a sense of unease seemed to still linger.
I wonder what the girl was dreaming about.
"Mom...no..."
Xia Lian buried her head in the pillow, and faint whispers came from her sleep, even tinged with sobs.
Wen Mo, lying on the bed, was stunned. He wanted to lean closer to listen, but then he felt that eavesdropping on someone's sleep talking was a bit impolite and disgusting... like a pervert.
Thinking of this, Wen Mo slowly pulled his head back onto the bed, turned over and faced away from her, but he kept replaying that dream in his mind.
"Mom...no..."
What does it mean exactly...?
I thought about it for a long time but couldn't come up with anything useful, which made it even harder for me to fall asleep.
Seeing Xia Lian's restless sleep, I felt a pang of heartache.
"Never mind, I can't sleep anyway."
Wenmo raised his head, as if he had thought of a solution.
Then, he grabbed his pillow with his right hand, leaned out of bed again, and gently tucked it into Xia Lian's arms.
As if "auto-pickup" was enabled, the sleeping girl immediately hugged his pillow tightly as soon as she touched it, pressing her entire cheek against it. After a few moments, her tightly furrowed brows gradually relaxed.
Seeing this, Wen Mo breathed a slight sigh of relief.
This trick really worked.
Many people feel uneasy when they sleep, mostly because they lack a sense of security. Giving them a pillow or a toy can help a lot, or having someone sleep with them can also solve the problem.
As a child, Wenmo was so attached to his parents that he couldn't even sleep alone. He would feel inexplicably scared and uneasy if he was away from his parents.
To solve this problem, his mother bought him an Ultraman doll to hold in his arms, and after that, Wenmer was never afraid to sleep alone again.
Everyone in the world who feels uneasy needs a plush pillow.
Xia Lian hugged her newly acquired "pillow" tightly, her breathing became even, and her chest rose and fell gently with each breath. She was sleeping soundly at this moment.
"If her face weren't so stiff, she'd actually be quite a cute girl." Wen Mo took a closer look by the moonlight.
Seeing that Xia Lian was sleeping much more peacefully, he felt relieved. He reached out to tuck her in and then lay back down on the bed.
Looking at the dark ceiling, Wen Mo felt a little sleepier.
But then again
Sleeping without a pillow is really uncomfortable.
He forced a smile, shook his numb arms, and forced himself to close his eyes.
...
The morning sunlight wasn't particularly harsh, casting a golden glow into the bedroom. Under the influence of her biological clock, Wen Mo peeked out from under the covers.
"What time is it...?"
He tried to get up, but then felt a sharp pain in his neck. "Ouch...!"
The "clattering" sound came from his cervical spine. It took him a few seconds to finally lift his head, but there was still a slight soreness and numbness in the back of his neck.
There was no pillow last night, and Wenmo doesn't know how he fell asleep. He even managed to wrap himself up completely in the blanket while he was sleeping. When he woke up in the morning, the bed looked like a spring roll.
Rubbing his sleepy eyes, Wen Mo was about to get out of bed when he quickly stopped himself. "I almost forgot there was someone sleeping under the bed..."
He tiptoed and quietly got off the bed from the other side.
Xia Lian slept soundly. Although she went to bed early last night, it didn't stop her from sleeping a little longer.
She was still clutching Wenmo's pillow, burying her entire face in it, and occasionally letting out soft snoring sounds.
Glug glug...
"Pfft..." Wen Mo tried hard to suppress his laughter. The purring sound was a little different from what he had imagined; it sounded more like a cat.
Seemingly sensing the presence of another person beside her, the girl's eyelashes trembled slightly, and she slowly opened her eyes under Wen Mo's watchful gaze.
She woke up.
My body is awake, but my mind isn't.
Xia Lian sat slumped on the bed, her eyes darting aimlessly around her, her head nodding slightly from time to time, her whole being in a half-dreaming, half-awake state.
Because of her thick hair, half of her face was covered by bangs, only revealing her still-smacking lips and ears tangled in her hair.
