The main activity on New Year's Eve is for the whole family to have a reunion dinner together.
Once all the food was on the table, everyone happily shared dishes with each other.
There aren't many activities in my hometown, at least not in the evenings. Everyone eats at home, and every household turns on its lights, making the whole village much brighter.
Perhaps influenced by the festive atmosphere, the elderly Wen family father and son were allowed to have a few drinks, which could be considered a happy occasion.
Wen Yiquan loved drinking, but ever since he developed liver problems from drinking, Su Juan has completely banned alcohol from him; he can't even touch a drop.
So, when he finally encountered a rare moment of warmth from alcohol, his alcohol tolerance had actually decreased significantly. After only a couple of sips, his neck turned red and he was panting heavily.
"How can you be so useless! You can't even outdrink your old man!"
Grandpa got really into it, picked up his small wine cup and was about to pour it into his mouth, his face as red as Guan Yu's. You'd think he was about to go and kill Hua Xiong, but thankfully, before he could kill Hua Xiong, Grandma slapped him back to his original state.
"Speak properly! There are two children here, what kind of behavior is this, drinking like this!"
Upon hearing this, the Wen family father and sons immediately lost their drunkenness and became as obedient as rabbits, sipping their wine in small, delicate sips.
Wen Mo wanted to laugh, but didn't dare to laugh out loud. He pretended to be casual and continued to pick up food, but mostly he picked up food for Xia Lian, until the food in her bowl was almost piled up like a small mountain.
"Let's eat, ignore these two who are acting crazy while drunk."
Grandma picked up her bowl and chopsticks with a disgruntled expression. She first tasted the lion's head meatballs made by Su Juan. When her tongue touched the meaty aroma, she was immediately captivated by the dish.
"Juanzi's cooking skills are getting better and better!"
"No, no, I'm nowhere near as good as Mom," Su Juan said with a smile.
It is said that the relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law is the most difficult to manage in the world, but it is not so obvious in the Wen family. Although they are not particularly close, they are all harmonious and happy.
For no other reason than that when the Wen family was penniless, it was unthinkable that such a beautiful woman would suddenly insist on marrying Wen Yiquan.
The elderly couple in the Wen family had already considered that if their son really couldn't find a wife, they wouldn't mind putting in more money.
But to his surprise, without spending a single penny, a beautiful woman took Wen Yiquan home with her arm around his.
And it brought another surprise: she was pregnant.
In order to get her father to compromise, she was willing to get pregnant before marriage, determined to marry Wen Yiquan.
So, at least until now, her grandparents still feel indebted to her. This girl has sacrificed too much for the Wen family, and even had a big fight with her father.
Although Wen Yiquan still doesn't dare to face his father-in-law, this is partly the reason—he's difficult to deal with.
At the dinner table, a father and son were arguing noisily, while a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law were having a peaceful conversation. On the other side of the table, two little kids were whispering to each other, occasionally giggling to themselves.
"It seems like everyone in my family is henpecked. My grandpa is controlled by my grandma, and my dad is also controlled by my mom. It's quite interesting, you know."
Being henpecked is a blessing, at least your wife cares about you and follows you around in every way, even if she can be a little arrogant sometimes.
These are all expressions of love for his wife, especially Wen Yiquan, who felt sorry for Su Juan for suffering with him for so long, but fortunately, things finally got better in the end.
Xia Lian seemed not to understand the term, and blankly raised her head, "Henpecked?"
"It means... a wife cares a lot about her husband, something like that. She has to ask about everything she does."
Upon hearing this, Xia Lian suddenly realized, "Then I am too, henpecked."
"You're a henpecked husband, you should be... a henpecked husband, hahaha."
Wenmo was amused by his own self-invented words, picked up his rice bowl and tried his best to finish all the remaining dishes, but unfortunately, most of the dishes were still left on the table in the end.
"I'm full."
Looking at the large table of dishes, Wen Mo shook his head.
It looks like we'll be eating leftovers until the day we get home.
Tomorrow is the first day of the Lunar New Year. On the second day, we have to visit relatives and friends, and also buy some gifts to see our maternal grandparents.
"We're full, so we'll get off the table now."
The two younger members took their leave and prepared to go upstairs to their rooms to rest.
"Aren't you going to watch the Spring Festival Gala?" Su Juan shouted.
"We're not going to watch anymore, we'll go upstairs first, you guys take your time eating."
Wen Mo waved his hand and pulled Xia Lian upstairs.
Who watches that stuff? If it were the old Spring Festival Gala, it would be fine, but the current Spring Festival Gala is just indescribable.
Song and dance programs are a bit better, but comedy programs are the most difficult to endure. They are not funny and are awkward, yet the audience is forced to interact.
Let alone the younger generation, even the older generation like grandparents don't really like watching it. Last time I went home for Chinese New Year, my grandmother watched it for a long time but still couldn't understand what the crosstalk was about.
It wasn't until almost midnight, after the two finished washing up and went back to bed, that Wen Mo quietly closed the door and gestured for Xia Lian to come and sleep on his side of the bed.
Xia Lian nodded obediently, threw off the covers and crawled into bed. She seemed to be a little chilled by the cold air, and her body was shivering.
"You're not cold, I'll give you a hug."
Wen Mo's body temperature was very high. When Xia Lian was hugged, she felt as if she was being wrapped in a slightly hard doll.
Neither of them was wearing pajamas, only thermal underwear, which was very stretchy. Because the material was thin, they could clearly feel the curves of each other's bodies.
He held her waist in his arms, and Xia Lian tried to snuggle closer to Wen Mo's chest, as if she wanted to bury herself in it. She could feel his hot breath under the covers.
"Isn't it a little hot?" Wenmo asked gently, resting his chin on her head.
Xia Lian didn't speak, but shook her head. Her soft body seemed to be held in his palm, and her two little feet were obediently placed to one side.
Perhaps it was because the New Year was approaching, but firecrackers and fireworks rang out in the village as if by prior arrangement.
The city is strict and doesn't allow these things, but it's different in the countryside. People can do whatever they want. The inky night sky is dyed with brilliant colors as fireworks explode in the sky, scattering into countless sparks.
The two hadn't closed the window, so they could clearly see the colors of the sky. The bed was warm and cozy, and they were holding each other tightly in their arms.
"It looks like fireworks."
"Hmm..." Xia Lian pressed against his chest, not moving.
Aren't you going to go see it?
Xia Lian shook her head. "I want to see Wen Mo's face."
After saying that, she raised her eyes and met the face of the person in front of her, which was illuminated by the firelight in the night. She couldn't help but gently stroke it and leave a light kiss on the corner of his mouth.
"You're so lewd, you're molesting me again."
Wen Mo touched the corner of his mouth, then smiled and pressed his lips even closer together.
"Happy New Year."
"Yes, Happy New Year."
Perhaps, the end is drawing ever closer.
