Interlude Afternoon

An office building.

The girl walked slowly down the unfamiliar corridor, dragging her suitcase.

The corridor was almost eerily quiet, with only the soft footsteps of a young girl and the sound of her suitcase wheels echoing through it.

Finally, she stopped in front of a door.

"Thump, thump, thump..."

"Please come in." A slightly deep, middle-aged man's voice came from inside the door.

The girl gripped the doorknob and slowly pushed the door open.

The interior resembled an office, filled with all sorts of things, including sofas, cushions, and even cacti growing on the windowsill for relaxation.

A man was standing by a desk, holding a glass of coffee, his gaze fixed on the girl.

"Uncle..." She slowly lowered her head and softly addressed the man in front of her, though her address was slightly hesitant, clearly indicating that she was not yet very familiar with him.

Wen Yi smiled broadly, patted her shoulder, and led her to sit on the sofa to the side, "Let's sit and chat."

The girl had just sat down when the man in front of her, as if by magic, pulled out a cushion from somewhere and gently placed it in her lap.

"This is?"

She glanced at the cushion in her hand; it felt very soft and had a woman's photo printed on it.

"I don't know if you'll be nervous, maybe a cushion will help." Wen Yiquan sat back in the office chair next to him, his smile never fading. "The person in the photo is my wife, isn't she beautiful, haha."

The girl nodded gently upon hearing this.

"very beautiful."

However, she did not feel nervous; on the contrary, her expression was calm, unlike someone who had just arrived in an unfamiliar place.

Looking at her expression, Wen Yiquan realized that he had been worrying too much.

"You haven't been crying lately, have you?" He took a small sip from his cup, then observed the girl's face. The redness and swelling around her eyes when they met before had disappeared. "Little girl, you probably don't like bitter things... How about milk?"

"Thank you, Uncle..." she whispered, took the milk Wen Yiquan handed her, and took a small sip from the rim of the cup. "I haven't cried lately."

Although I cried almost every night at the beginning.

Later, somehow, I seemed to get used to this situation, and my eyes could no longer shed a single tear. Even if I wanted to cry occasionally, I would always force myself to hold it back.

Looking at the girl's expressionless face, Wen Yiquan felt a strange sense of distance, as if she were unapproachable.

"You've really worked hard." He patted the girl on the shoulder.

The girl slowly lowered her head, her eyes filled with emotions that others could not see.

Seeing this, Wen Yiquan stopped mentioning her situation and skillfully changed the subject.

"You got into that top school, right?"

"Um."

"How about you live near the school from now on? I'll arrange housing so you can get home faster from school." He took out his phone, seemingly searching for something.

Upon hearing this, the girl's expression finally softened. She slowly rose and bowed deeply to Wen Yiquan, "Thank you... Uncle..."

"Hey, hey, don't rush to say thank you, I haven't finished speaking yet." Wen Yiquan quickly helped her up. "There's just one additional condition, I don't know if you can accept it."

The girl looked up, her face full of confusion.

"What, the conditions?"

Wen Yiquan waited for her to prepare herself before clearing his throat and slowly saying, "Well... you don't live alone, my son—your distant cousin—also lives there, he..."

Before Wen Yiquan could finish speaking, the girl gently shook her head, "It's alright..."

Having a place to stay is already a blessing.

"Really? I'm worried you'll hate living with him."

The girl tilted her head and said earnestly, "Uncle, don't worry... I won't hurt my cousin."

Upon hearing this, Wen Yiquan almost couldn't help but laugh, but he gently patted her head with his large hand.

This girl speaks in a deliberate, slow-paced way; it's quite interesting.

"Okay, okay, as long as you don't mind, I think your cousin probably won't mind either."

Even if he minds, it's no use.

After saying that, Wen Yiquan took out his phone, found the photo he had prepared, and showed it to her. "This is your cousin."

In the photo, a boy is making a peace sign and smiling at the camera; the background appears to be a classroom in a school.

Upon closer inspection, the boy has a pair of delicate almond-shaped eyes, a small nose, red lips and white teeth. His features, combined with his small face, give him an indescribable handsomeness, although he still looks a little immature.

“This photo was taken two years ago. The boy should look about the same as he does now…” Wen Yiquan looked at his son in the photo and began to have doubts.

The girl didn't have any opinion about him, but she felt a little relieved, at least he didn't seem like a scary person.

"I called a taxi for you, it should be almost downstairs now." Wen Yiquan glanced at the time.

"Thank you, Uncle..." The girl bowed again obediently, her expression remaining unchanged.

After saying that, Wen Yiquan waved his hand, picked up the girl's suitcase, and gestured for her to follow him downstairs.

The two had just come down from the elevator when they saw a black car parked right in front of the door. After briefly checking the license plate, Wen Yiquan told the driver to open the trunk and put the suitcase inside.
