It seems that the moment Xia Lian was found in the stairwell, their fates were tightly bound together.
Hearing the girl's confession, her tearful yet smiling expression was very infectious. Raindrops wet her long hair, dripping down her big ponytail to the ground.
Wen Mo could sense that this confession was different from usual.
Xia Lian's mouth is full of words like "like" and "together," because she doesn't understand what they mean.
For this naive girl, liking someone is simply liking someone; it doesn't mean anything else, and the phrase "being together" is just that—a phrase.
Wenmo might have understood what she meant from the beginning. When did he start pretending not to understand? Was it because of their relationship? Or was it because of the distance between them despite their closeness?
The barrier of their social status made him ask himself countless times: Is this really okay? Is it really good? Will she agree?
After a series of questions, besides feeling uneasy, he was mostly determined. Since confirming his feelings, this man had never hesitated again.
Unfortunately, the planned confession didn't work out.
Xia Lian cried fiercely, almost sobbing uncontrollably, her head pressed against Wen Mo's chest, twitching with each sob, occasionally gently pounding his chest.
Even if the rain is heavy, they can still hear each other's heartbeats clearly.
Wenmo heard it all.
He also understood the choice in the girl's heart. Even if this path would be difficult and she might be met with strange looks and criticism from others, as long as there is love, nothing will be a problem.
He reached out to help wipe away the tears from Xia Lian's eyes, but it didn't help much. The tears flowed like a burst dam, mingling with the rain and hitting her face incessantly.
Wenmo's eyes reflected her face, her small face streaked with tears, and his strange emotions seemed to urge him to reveal the truth.
"Is it the kind of liking I'm thinking of?" he asked, pulling the girl into his arms and holding her tightly, almost greedily sucking on Xia Lian's hair.
"It's not like that...it seems, it's..." Xia Lian's body trembled slightly, and she stammered, nodding and shaking her head intermittently, "I like Wen Mo...I like him so much...I like him the most..."
The intense crying caused a temporary breakdown in her language system, and even Xia Lian herself didn't know what she was saying, but she still tried her best to express her feelings with her remaining consciousness.
"Wenmo is the best... I want to be with Wenmo forever..."
Like a cat abandoned by someone, hiding in a corner during a downpour, it was eventually picked up and taken home by a loving person.
"Is it that special kind of liking? You understand, right?"
Wen Mo gently patted the girl's back, his large hands occasionally stroking her back.
Feeling the warmth of the man's embrace, Xia Lian wiped her tears and snot on his chest, her eyes glistening as she choked out, "I want to be Wen Mo's lover... I want to date Wen Mo... I want to walk with Wen Mo forever..."
The girl spoke slowly, venting her innermost emotions.
It was the first time Wenmo had ever seen her speak so much in one breath. Although she still stumbled over her words, he was still amazed.
Especially the description of himself in the middle, which Wen Mo had never heard before, even made him somewhat doubtful whether the Wen Mo Xia Lian described was really that good. Even he himself found it hard to believe.
After a long while, when Xia Lian finally poured out her heart, Wen Mo's breathing quickened and his body trembled slightly.
Rainwater streamed down his collar and into his back. The temperature was already low, and being soaked by the rain, coupled with the weakness he felt after running, made Wen Mo feel like his body was about to freeze.
"Well, let's go back to the pavilion and talk about it slowly... I'm a little cold."
He forced a smile and pushed Xia Lian back to the pavilion they had just been in.
It's as if all the rain that hadn't fallen in the past few weeks has come down, and the rain outside shows no sign of stopping, leaving the whole world shrouded in darkness.
The two sat very close together, each obediently on one side.
Wenmo was very nervous. Apart from the first day of moving, he had rarely been this nervous since he was a child. His hands were loosely clenched into fists and placed on his thighs.
Xia Lian just said what she could and couldn't say.
Everything was said.
Those were the girl's innermost thoughts, and also the reason why Wenmo had always kept them hidden in his heart.
But at this moment, she had already broken through the barrier between the two of them, and with a hard poke of her finger, she pierced directly into Wen Mo's heart.
It felt like a kiss on the tip of his heart. Wen Mo was speechless, only feeling very happy, because he knew that the two of them had been in love from the very beginning.
Even though his body was as cold as ice, the heat from his heart and mind gradually warmed him up. Covering his chest, Wen Mo secretly glanced at the girl beside him.
Xia Lian's expression was obscured; her long, thin bangs, wet from the rain, covered most of her face, and only occasional sobs could be heard.
"To be honest, it's not fair that only you are speaking your mind..." Wen Mo scratched his head, his eyes fixed on her.
The suppressed affection was finally ignited by a rainstorm. Outside the pavilion, the rain poured down, but inside, only the sincere hearts of the young man and woman were reciprocated.
There are no barriers of identity; we are simply discussing the purest, most basic, and most primal form of love and affection.
"At first, I didn't see you as a romantic partner, or even as a girl. After all, we're family, and it would have felt strange to look at you differently."
