The old house was quiet.
The rice in the rice cooker emitted a fragrant aroma, accompanied by a light side dish. Xia Lian took out an insulated lunchbox and carefully packed the rice and dish inside.
She glanced back at the clock on the wall, then, without further delay, grabbed her lunchbox and headed out the door.
It was the transition from summer to autumn, and she was wearing a short-sleeved shirt. Having just taken a shower, a gust of evening wind made Xia Lian shiver.
Fortunately, her destination wasn't far from home. She gritted her teeth and ran out quickly.
About ten minutes later, a white building appeared in front of her. The hospital exuded a cool atmosphere, as if it were already a common sight. Xia Lian skillfully found the inpatient department.
The hospital corridors were deep and occasionally filled with the pungent smell of disinfectant. Outside the large wards, there were hurried footsteps and deliberately quiet conversations.
As they arrived at the ward, a doctor happened to come out. He turned around and seemed to notice Xia Lian, who was panting, so he came over and patted her head. "Little Lian has come to see her mother again?"
"Hmm." She took a breath and bowed slightly to the doctor. "Dr. Li, did you just examine my mother? Is she feeling any better now?"
Dr. Li paused, a fleeting sadness flashing in his eyes, but he didn't show it. Instead, he patted her shoulder and smiled gently.
"Your mother is waiting for you inside. Go in."
After saying that, he turned and left the ward.
"Goodbye, Dr. Li." Xia Lian waved goodbye, then gently pushed open the door and quietly entered the room.
On the hospital bed, a beautiful woman sat upright, looking out the window at the scenery, her hands tightly gripping the white quilt, her face haggard.
She was as fragile as porcelain, as if a gust of wind could shatter her. Her snow-white skin and emaciated figure seemed to be the best description of her frail health.
"Mom." The girl, who was still panting, immediately put on a joyful expression when she saw her mother, and walked to the bedside with the lunchbox.
Zhou Yu turned around upon hearing the voice, her tired expression brightening slightly. "Xiao Lian is here."
Xia Lian placed the food on the table, pulled up a chair and sat down next to her mother. "Let's eat first, Mom, otherwise it will get cold and won't taste good."
She smiled and opened the lunchbox, and a delicious aroma immediately filled the entire ward.
Actually, the hospital does provide meals, but the prices aren't exactly cheap, and the taste isn't particularly delicious. Eating there every day would probably cost a lot of money, so Xia Lian would go home after school every day to cook the meals and then bring them over.
Looking at her daughter's pale face, Zhou Yu reached out and stroked her cheek. The outside temperature wasn't high, and her face felt icy cold after being blown by the wind.
"It's already autumn, why don't you change into a long-sleeved shirt?" She felt so sorry for you that she didn't rush to eat.
"It's alright, I'll change it in a few days. You go ahead and eat."
Zhou Yu had no appetite, ever since she was diagnosed, but seeing the food her daughter had painstakingly brought her, she forced herself to eat a few more bites.
Xia Lian smiled. Lately, her favorite thing to do was watch her mother eat. The fact that her mother could eat meant that her health was improving and that she would soon recover and no longer have to stay in this depressing hospital room.
After her mother finished eating, she snuggled up to her mother, and the two leaned on each other.
"Xiao Lian, how's school?"
"That's great! My grades have never fallen behind, Mom, don't worry~" She nestled in her mother's arms, looking very obedient.
Zhou Yu stroked her head and shook her head. "I wasn't asking about your grades. How are you getting along with your friends?"
Upon hearing this, Xia Lian's smile froze, but she quickly recovered and replied, "Everything's fine. I'm getting along well with my friends at school, haha."
"That's good. Xiao Lian, you must get along well with your friends."
When Zhou Yu said those words, a faint sadness was hidden on her face, and her eyebrows were lowered.
She hopes her daughter can get along well with her classmates. Since Xia Lian is currently alone at home, she shouldn't be too lonely at school.
"Don't cause trouble for others," Zhou Yu said gently. "We should be honest and kind so that we can get along well with others."
"Oh, don't worry about me, I'll be fine." Xia Lian said sweetly, finding solace in her mother's arms, one of the few places where she could truly relax. "Mom, you're the one who needs to take good care of yourself and get better..."
The two spent some time together, and after a while, a nurse-like woman entered the ward, and Xia Lian knew that the visiting time was about to end.
"The little girl has come to see her mother again."
The nurse put down the form in her hand. Her face was obscured by her mask, but you could tell she was smiling as she spoke.
"Good evening, sister." Xia Lian greeted her obediently.
The nurse was delighted, took off her gloves, and gently ruffled the girl's hair. "Oh, this little girl is so cute!"
Suddenly, she stopped what she was doing.
"Xiao Lian, did something burn the back of your neck?"
A sharp-eyed nurse noticed a small, round scar on the back of Xia Lian's neck.
Upon hearing this, Xia Lian froze, quickly brushing her hair back to cover herself.
"I accidentally burned myself while cooking, it's nothing serious," she explained casually, her smile never fading.
As she explained, the nurse was still a little confused. Getting burned while cooking is a common occurrence, but how could she have burned the back of her neck like that?
