Ye Wanshu held the hands of Gu Qingmian and Gu Tingji, brother and sister, but her eyes were fixed on Ye Huaisu who was lying on the bed.
After just a few days of not seeing each other, my aunt seemed to have lost a lot of weight, with only skin and bones on her face. It was obvious that I was the one whose engagement was broken off. My aunt looked as if she was the one who was broken off by someone else.
Perhaps this is the pain of people who are too vain and too concerned about their reputation.
Ye Huaisu forced himself to sit up, a smile forming on the corners of his pale lips: "Wanwan, you're back. Come quickly and let your aunt take a good look at you."
Ye Wanshu first hugged the tired-looking siblings Gu Qingmian and Gu Tingji with a distressed look, then she walked over and sat on the edge of the bed to take the medicine from her mother.
"Let me do it."
Just as he was about to feed Ye Huaisu the medicine, Ye Huaisu smiled faintly and shook his head: "I've been drinking medicine for several days in a row, and my mouth is astringent. When I heard that you were crowned as a princess, I was so happy that I felt much better all over."
Hearing this, Ye Wanshu felt an inexplicable pang of sadness in her heart.
My aunt sold her ancestral home and invested a lot of money, just looking forward to this event. However, as a princess, I am not the emperor. He did it because of the Ye family's contribution. He just wanted to promote my father and disgust the empress dowager.
"Aunt, Wanwan is now of age and can handle her own affairs. You don't have to worry too much about me."
Glancing at Gu Qingmian and Gu Tingji, Ye Wanshu said softly, "You'd better take care of yourself and take good care of your cousins."
The intention of saying this is not just to show concern for her, but also to serve as a reminder.
After all, her aunt is her grandmother's flesh and blood and her only relative now. She doesn't want to have such a quarrel with her aunt that they will never have any contact with each other again.
In fact, as long as she didn't instigate a marriage between herself and the Gu brothers, not only their aunt-nephew relationship, but also the mother-son relationship between her and the Gu brothers could continue to maintain superficial peace.
"My aunt has been married into the Duke's Mansion for so many years, and she knows everything about it. She should know that many things cannot be forced, so it is better to let nature take its course. My cousins are all my uncle's flesh and blood. Even if there is no marriage with me, no one will dare to treat them badly in the future."
Ye Wanshu's advice was straightforward, and Ye Huaisu could hear the hidden meaning in her words, which was that she was blaming him for meddling in other people's affairs.
"Wanwan, I admit that I hope you marry Tingzhou because I hope Qingmian and Tingji can be better cared for in the future. I also want to help your uncle make friends with your father, but my aunt is not entirely selfish. I am doing this for your own good."
Ye Huaisu said earnestly, "Your mother and grandmother are both gone, and your father is a greedy villain. You have no one to rely on. I hope you will stay in the Duke's Mansion and become my daughter-in-law, which will strengthen our relationship. It is better than marrying into another family and being embarrassed by your parents-in-law."
What she said was quite pertinent, and Ye Wanshu could feel her aunt's painstaking efforts.
But my aunt seems to have forgotten one thing: the so-called relationship between mother-in-law, daughter-in-law and sisters-in-law should first be based on the fact that the woman she marries is a good man.
If she is not even satisfied with the husband she is going to marry, and still considers the relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, then she is not living with her parents-in-law.
"Thank you for your concern, Aunt."
Ye Wanshu said truthfully, "Wanwan just had her engagement broken off and doesn't want to consider another marriage. My aunt's birthday is coming soon, so you should take care of yourself first and don't worry your uncle, Qingmian, and Tingji."
Ye Huaisu was clearly unwilling to accept this: "Wanwan, Tingzhou was confused for a moment, but Tingchen..."
"Aunt," Ye Wanshu interrupted her, "My two cousins are brothers. Since I broke off the engagement with my eldest cousin, I naturally wouldn't consider marrying my second cousin."
Gu An and Gu Tingchen led Imperial Physician Liu inside and just happened to hear these words at the door.
The father and son looked at each other. Thinking of his son's bold words at the door just now, Gu An suddenly lost his composure and his face became terribly gloomy.
Seeing this, Gu Tingchen entered the house first, pulling Ye Wanshu outside, "Wanwan, come with me."
Before Ye Wanshu could react, he forcibly pulled her out the door.
"Tingchen, don't hurt Wanwan."
Ye Huaisu's anxious voice came from behind. Seeing this, Gu Qingmian and Gu Tingji hurriedly chased after him.
It was not until they reached the corridor in the back garden that Ye Wanshu mustered up the strength to push him away.
"Gu Tingchen, what are you doing?"
Ye Wanshu said with a sullen look on her face, "We've long since ended our relationship. I made everything clear at the Ji residence that day. I respect you as my brother, and I don't want to embarrass my aunt. Please respect yourself."
Gu Qingmian and Gu Tingji chased after her and stood in front of Ye Wanshu, shouting, "Second brother, my cousin is back to visit mother, please don't mess around."
"Get lost."
Gu Tingchen's eyes were filled with sinister intent. With a casual push, he pushed the brother and sister far away, and they fell to the ground.
"If you don't want to be kicked out of the house, just stay away."
Gu Tingchen yelled at the siblings, but Gu Tingji stood up fearlessly, stepped in front of Gu Tingchen, and said righteously, "I won't allow my second brother to bully my cousin."
"How dare you meddle in my affairs."
Gu Tingchen was so angry that he mentioned Gu Tingji and was about to throw him out. Ye Wanshu was terrified and quickly stopped him, "Gu Tingchen, Aji is just an eight-year-old child. He is still your uncle's flesh and blood. Why are you so cruel?"
She stepped forward and pulled Gu Tingji back behind her, and hurriedly ordered, "Aji, quickly take Qingmian back to look after your mother."
"Cousin." Gu Tingji glared at Gu Tingchen: "I won't leave. I can't let him bully you."
"Cousin, you'll be fine," Ye Wanshu urged, "Go quickly."
