The most popular place in Sun City is still the Valley of Waves. Although it is an artificial beach, all the sand and stones are transported from the seaside, and it can also create 2-meter-high waves for tourists to surf. Nalan Shiqi changed her clothes and enjoyed the impact of the "waves" like a child in the artificial swimming pool. Yunluo was too lazy to change into a swimsuit and stood outside in denim shorts to play "wave riding".
The sumptuous breakfast kept Nalan Shiqi and Yunluo strong until 3pm, when they returned to the Crystal Court of the Palace for afternoon tea. Although the food was not as good as the breakfast, the elegant environment, exquisite tableware, and the melodious piano sound still gave them a different kind of satisfaction. I forgot the price of afternoon tea, but it seemed to be around R150 per person. After the elegant afternoon tea, they bid farewell to "Suncity" with a sense of satisfaction mixed with a little regret.
After returning to Johannesburg, we stayed at the Mondior Emperors Palace near the airport. The price on booking.com was R1700/night, and the travel agency quoted R1490/night. There are four major casinos in Johannesburg, from largest to smallest: Monte Casino, Emperors Palace, Canival Casino, and Golden City. Each casino has hotels of different star ratings. The biggest advantage of staying in a casino hotel is safety. Even after dark, you can walk out of the room and find a place to eat, drink, and walk around. Mondior is a 5* hotel in Emperors Palace. Although the hotel facilities and casino scale are not as good as Monte, it is close to the airport, which is convenient for Nalan Shiqi and Yunluo to board the plane on the last day. During peak hours, traffic jams in Johannesburg are quite serious.
Mondior is a four-story white building. Whether it is the architectural style, interior layout or garden design, it is all pure European style. The corridor leading to the casino is also hung with classical oil paintings on both sides, although they are all fakes. But it still has a great atmosphere.
The casino area is connected to various hotels and shopping areas. The shopping area is similar to the Venetian, like a European town frozen in time, but the scale here is much smaller, most of them are restaurants, and shopping is basically hopeless.
Afternoon tea had already filled Yunluo up. She had no intention of having dinner and just wanted to stroll around the shopping area. As a result, she accidentally walked into an Italian restaurant. She ordered a cream mushroom pasta and an extra plate. When she saw the dessert area, she was attracted by the name "chocolatepizza". She knew she might not be able to finish it, but she couldn't resist her curiosity. The pasta came in 2 plates, and when she asked for an extra plate, she didn't say she wanted to share. As a result, Yunluo and Nalan Shiqi were wondering whether this was a portion of noodles while eating. They still gave her 2 portions, but after more than ten days of traveling, Nalan Shiqi had come to the conclusion that "if it was two portions of noodles, it would definitely not be that little."
In fact, there was quite a lot of food on Nalan Shiqi and Yunluo's plates, especially cheese. Both plates were filled with cheese. After finishing, they were so full that they could only pack up the dessert. The result of paying the bill confirmed Nalan Shiqi's conclusion. It was indeed packaged. The merchant's service was indeed very considerate. After returning with the change. There was only a 50 yuan bill and a few coins. Yunluo asked the waiter if he could exchange the 50 yuan. Xiaohei took the money and left for 7 or 8 minutes. He came back with a few 10 yuan and 20 yuan bills. It turned out that the store had no small denomination banknotes, so he went to other stores to exchange them. I didn't remember the price of this meal, but it was about R150 including the tip.
In foreign countries, the star rating of hotels is usually lower than that in China, and Mondior's facilities do not seem to meet the 5* standard. However, the happy day has filled Yunluo's heart with a great sense of happiness. She no longer cares about the standard of the hotel's facilities. There is also free wifi. After taking a shower, she lay on the bed, texting and falling asleep.
Although Mondior's breakfast cannot compare with Palace's, it has a Chinese style - white porridge and fried noodles. The taste is acceptable, at least Nalan Shiqi feels very comfortable eating it.
At 10 o'clock, Frank arrived at the lobby. Today he was going to Proteria, the administrative capital of South Africa. In 1652, Dutch colonists crossed the ocean and landed in Cape Town and immigrated to South Africa. Most of these colonists were farmers. The Dutch word for "farmer" - Boer is pronounced as "Boer", so the descendants of the Dutch in South Africa are called Boers. In 1855, Marthinus Wessel Pretorius founded Proteria, named after his father, the Boer leader Andries Pretorius, and his mother Ria. He himself was the only person who had served as the president of both the Transvaal and the Orange Free State. In 1860, Proteria became the capital of the Transvaal Republic; in 1900, it was occupied by the British; in 1910, Proteria became the administrative capital of the Union of South Africa (changed to the Republic of South Africa in 1961) ruled by white racists.
Every year from October to November, when the city is in spring, flowers are in full bloom, especially the purple trumpet flowers on both sides of the streets. The romantic purple color covers the entire street. The whole city holds a week-long celebration for this, so Proteria is also named "Purple Trumpet Flower City".
South Africa is still a young country on this planet, without a long history or many historical sites. The Voortrekker Monument, also known as the Voortrekkers Monument, located on a hill in the nature reserve in the southern suburbs of Pretoria, may be the most storied place in South Africa, and its existence is mixed with too many mixed reviews. The contradiction between national dignity and social progress is not only found in South Africa.
In the mid-19th century, in order to escape British rule and establish their own independent country, a large number of Boers abandoned their pastures and houses, drove cattle carts with the elderly and children, and left the Cape Peninsula to migrate to the northeast. This difficult migration in human history began in 1834 and lasted for many years. In the area between the Orange River and the Vah River, the Orange Free State was established. In 1856, Andres Pretorius established the Transvaal Republic (meaning "across the Vah River") in the northern part of the Vah River. During the thousands of kilometers of trekking, they encountered numerous difficulties along the way. Among them, the "Blood River Battle" with the indigenous Zulus in the Ncombe River not only changed the fate of the Boers, but also completely changed the historical process of South Africa. It has important significance in the history of South Africa. In order to commemorate their pioneers, the descendants of the Boers built this magnificent building at the place where they won the victory. It took 11 years to complete.
The Pioneer Memorial Hall was designed by the famous architect Gerard Moerdijk. Since its establishment, it has won numerous awards and was awarded the title of the best museum in Africa in 2006.
The black wrought iron gate and spear image of the memorial hall symbolize the power of Zulu King Dingane. In the "Battle of Blood River", the Boers used 64 oxcarts to form a temporary camp to prevent the attack of the Zulu people. The large oxcart camp composed of 64 magic stone granite symbols the protection of the memorial hall. However, the "oxcart formation" on the wall now has each car as high as 27 meters.
The Pioneer Memorial Hall is a 41-meter-high square building, majestic and solemn, built with red granite from the Parys area of the Free State. In front stands a bronze statue sculpted by Anton van Voll, showing a woman and her children, in memory of the Boer Pioneer women and their families; the black wildebeest carved above the bottom wall symbolizes the dangers of Africa; the granite stone above the front door is carved with a buffalo head, one of the most ferocious animals in South Africa, symbolizing the protection of the memorial hall and the resistance to foreign enemies; the four eaves above the exterior are made of sawtooth triangle patterns and are zigzag-shaped, symbolizing fertile soil and water, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the ancestors; there is a white granite statue in each corner of the building, three of which are famous Pioneer leaders - Pretorius father and son and the governor of the United Camp, Pietretief (Peter Retief), and the other anonymous symbolizes all other Pioneers, who stand in the four corners, guarding the memorial hall and the glory of the heroes.
Walking into the hall, the huge high dome, marble floor and ingenious wall carvings tell people about the historical events of the Great Migration period and the daily life of our ancestors.
The wall carvings are composed of 27 quercetta Italian marble reliefs. The total cost of the frieze construction is 60,000 pounds. The total weight of the raw materials is 360 tons, and the weight after chiseling is 180 tons. It was completed by four sculptors Hennie Potgieter, Peter Kirchhoff, Frikkiekruger and Laurika Postma after many years. Although the wall carvings were completed by four sculptors, the overall style is exactly the same. The characters are vivid and lifelike, as if you can hear their laughter when they are happy and their crying when they are sad during the migration. This group of reliefs not only depicts the political and historical significance of the Great Migration, but also shows its great achievements in social and cultural aspects.
Faith supported the Boers to open up new lands. In the difficult migration environment, animals and animal bones became playmates and toys for children.
During the migration, the governor of the United Camp, Pietretief, reached an agreement with the leader of the Zulu tribe, Dingane, that the Boers would assist the Zulus in defeating other tribes, and the Zulus would allow the Boers to establish their homes here.
The united camp helped Dinggan defeat the other tribes, but Governor Pietretief and his advance troops were killed in Dinggan's "Hongmen Banquet". It is said that there were 117 victims at the time, and the 117 steps leading to the memorial hall were built to commemorate them. (To be continued...)
