Chapter Five: A Little Interlude

After that exam, Pei Ke and Su Xun finally started to have real conversations, like a normal pair of deskmates. They would chat together after class, discussing what they had learned in the previous lesson, complaining about the food in the cafeteria, and making some small jokes.

Su Xun made new friends in her new class besides Tang Shi, which made her happy for a while. She gradually became less withdrawn and started to greet her classmates more often.

As the midterm exams approached this semester, a new anime called "Shugo Chara!" came from Japan and became very popular throughout the elementary school. Gradually, the most discussed topic during breaks became the Guardian Eggs and who was cooler among Amu, Tadase, and Ikuto. Some girls even split into two camps, one supporting Tadase and Amu being together, and the other supporting Ikuto and Amu being together. The girls in the "Tadase/Amu faction" and the "Ikuto/Amu faction" sometimes even argued.

In fifth and sixth grade, girls are always enthusiastic about these things, such as discussing whose look is more beautiful in the newly filmed period drama, or debating whether Jay Chou's or JJ Lin's songs are better. These are the little thoughts of elementary school, simple and beautiful.

"Ring ring ring ring"

The bell rang precisely on time to signal the end of get out of class. The chubby Chinese teacher was lecturing on Wang Anshi's poem "Mooring at Guazhou": "Between Jingkou and Guazhou, a single stretch of water separates us; Zhongshan is only a few mountains away. The spring breeze has once again turned the southern bank of the Yangtze green; when will the bright moon shine upon my return?"

Hearing the bell ring for the end of get out of class, Teacher Peng frowned, her eyebrows pressed together.

"That's all for today's lesson. Go home and memorize this poem. I'll be checking your knowledge tomorrow. get out of class dismissed!"

Before the teacher's "get out of class dismissed" had even faded, some students near the door started rushing out of the classroom. This was the fourth period in the morning, and the students were all hurrying to the cafeteria to reserve seats.

Although many students go home for lunch or have their parents bring it to them, the school cafeteria is often crowded during mealtimes because it is relatively small.

Tang Shi walked to the aisle in front of Su Xun's desk as usual and said quickly, "Xiao Xunxun, let's go eat. I heard that the cafeteria has new dishes today. If we don't go now, they'll be gone!"

Seeing Tang Shi's anxious expression, as if she wanted to grab her and run away immediately, Su Xun almost couldn't help but laugh.

Pei Ke smiled and stood up to give up his seat. He had seen everything Tang Shi had said, done, and said.

Tang Shi then turned to Pei Ke: "Pei Ke, would you like to come with us?"

"No need, I always eat at home." Pei Ke shook his head.

Su Xun took Tang Shi's hand and said as they walked, "Aren't you going to hurry up? Weren't you in a bit of a rush just now?"

The cafeteria was as crowded as she had imagined. Tang Shi finally found two empty seats amidst the sea of people, put down her tray, straightened up, and waved to Su Xun, who was looking around not far away: "Su Xun, over here."

Su Xun followed the sound and sat down next to Tang Shi, listening to Tang Shi chattering on and on about how she was late and missed out on the new dishes.

Su Xun was already familiar with Tang Shi's loud and boisterous personality, so she simply ignored her and focused on eating. Tang Shi didn't care either; she knew she was usually very talkative, and most people would have stopped her long ago. Only Su Xun, though she didn't listen, didn't find her noisy, which is why the two of them became friends.

Across from Su Xun sat a chubby boy who wasn't wearing a school uniform but his own clothes, making him stand out conspicuously among the uniform school boys.

"Su Xun, Tang Shi, it's you two."

The two girls were so engrossed in their conversation that they hadn't noticed the boy opposite them was their classmate, Pu Xiaochuan. This time, he took the initiative to greet them, and Tang Shi and Su Xun both replied before continuing their lunch together.

Pu Xiaochuan transferred from another school this semester. He has a cheerful personality and loves to talk. He quickly became friends with his classmates. Tang Shi and Su Xun sit a bit far apart, so they don't interact much.

After this meal, they gradually started to interact more.

By chance, Tang Shi discovered that Pu Xiaochuan was also watching "Shugo Chara!" The three of them often got together after class to discuss it, and gradually became good friends. Tang Shi and Su Xun formed a trio.

That day, Tang Shi took a day off to attend her sister's wedding with her family. Su Xun had to eat lunch alone.

Because Su Xun returned to the classroom early, there were few people in the classroom. He glanced around and saw Pu Xiaochuan sitting quietly in his seat, doodling on paper.

Su Xun walked over and knocked on Pu Xiaochuan's table. The sudden "bang bang" startled Pu Xiaochuan: "Su Xun, it's you! You scared me to death!"

"I saw you were so focused, so I wanted to see what you were doing. I'm sorry I startled you," Su Xun said, feeling somewhat guilty.

"I recently read a comic book, and here's the female protagonist in it," Pu Xiaochuan proudly showed Su Xun the drawing.

The female protagonist in the painting has beautiful long hair and big eyes. She is Jiu Yue, the female protagonist of the recently popular comic "Stealing the Stars in September".

After looking at the painting, Su Xun couldn't help but say, "Pu Xiaochuan, you painted it really well."

"No, I just really enjoy doing these things. I draw them for fun." Pu Xiaochuan scratched his head sheepishly.

"Really, you're very talented; I just can't draw like that."

"Hehe, then I'll draw a picture of you. I love drawing portraits. As long as you're not afraid I'll make you look ugly."

“Great, no one has ever drawn me before.”

Su Xun sat down in the seat in front of Pu Xiaochuan and quietly watched Xiaochuan doodle and revise on the paper. After more than ten minutes, Xiaochuan looked up and said shyly, "I drew a rough sketch, it's very simple, take a look."
