Chapter Two: My New Desk Mate

Pei Ke had excellent grades and was also very cute, so she quickly became an outstanding student that teachers often talked about.

In any class, there are always a few key figures who consistently attract everyone's attention, such as Pei Ke and Pan Yingying. Both are top students academically and are polite, making them memorable.

In every class, there's always that one person who is average-looking, neither beautiful nor ugly, always quiet, with average grades, and avoids participating in activities whenever possible. They're the kind of person who would never be noticed in a crowd.

Su Xun happens to play this role, always deliberately minimizing her presence, so much so that even the homeroom teacher often mispronounces her name.

Actually, it's not entirely Su Xun's fault. Her parents were very strict with her from a young age. Her father had a bad temper, and her mother was a strong-willed woman, so her natural instincts were inevitably suppressed to some extent. Moreover, she was short and too quiet, making her hard to notice.

Su Xun had thought about changing. Before the start of each semester, she would secretly tell herself that she would become a lively, cheerful, and likable girl starting this semester.

She made a rule for herself: to raise her hand to speak in class and to talk to her classmates.

Unfortunately, change is always too difficult for a child, and she never succeeded. Eventually, the matter was left unresolved.

After returning the book, Su Xun and Pei Ke had little contact. Due to her personality, Su Xun didn't often interact with her classmates, especially the popular ones. From beginning to end, Tang Shi was the only friend she could really talk to.

As for someone as outstanding as Pei Ke, she tried to avoid associating with him as much as possible. Pei Ke, naturally, wouldn't even notice that Su Xun existed in the class.

This state of being essentially strangers continued until fifth grade.

That semester, they changed classes once. All the students in the grade were shuffled and regrouped into classes. Su Xun and Tang Shi were in Class 3, which made them happy for a while. Pei Ke was also in this class.

The new homeroom teacher was a young, chubby male teacher with triangular eyes that made him look a bit fierce. His surname was Li, and he taught them math.

The new class will rearrange the seating. Ms. Li stood on the podium, scanned the students in the class, and began to say, "Because it is the new semester, the seating needs to be adjusted. Now, please stand in the corridor in order of height, and I will arrange the seats."

The students were somewhat intimidated by their seemingly stern homeroom teacher and immediately lined up obediently in the hallway. Some students who had previously been in the same class and sat together were a little unhappy about being separated and slowly walked out of the classroom. Su Xun and Tang Shi were among them.

"Su Xun, we've finally managed to be together again, I don't want to sit separately from you." Tang Shi pouted, her eyes full of dissatisfaction.

Su Xun was quite optimistic and comforted her, "It's okay, we're still in the same class, I can come find you to play after class."

Although that's what she said, Tang Shi was still very reluctant to pull Su Xun slowly out.

Actually, Su Xun was also quite nervous. She wasn't good at socializing, and she was only really familiar with Tang Shi in the class. If she had to sit with other people, she would have to start getting to know them all over again. And if her new deskmate was someone difficult to get along with, it would be really troublesome for her...

Outside the classroom, the students had already lined up in order of height. When Su Xun came out, she glanced at the line and took the initiative to stand at the first position. As soon as she stood there, her face turned red again.

Su Xun didn't know why, but her classmates always seemed to grow much faster than her. In the past five years, many classmates who were the same height as her were now half a head taller than her, and she always seemed to be the shortest person in the class.

Actually, her family's genes weren't bad, and her parents weren't short either. Sometimes Su Xun would wonder if there was something wrong with her body, like she had dwarfism or something, and she was always very worried about it.

Teacher Li stood at the door, calling the students in one by one to arrange their seats. She was the first one called in and sat in the first seat of the last group, by the window. This made Su Xun secretly happy. Outside the window was a very tall camphor tree, which must have been quite old, with thick branches and lush leaves.

Su Xun could see a patch of green outside the window with just a turn of her head, and sometimes she could even hear birds chirping.

She really liked this corner.

Suddenly, the chair next to me was pulled out, making the creaking sound typical of wooden chairs; my new deskmate had arrived.

Su Xun looked up, somewhat surprised. It was Pei Ke. Pei Ke wasn't short, so he shouldn't be sitting in the first row.

Perhaps sensing Su Xun's gaze and guessing what was going on, she explained, "I was originally going to sit in that seat over there, but I'm a little nearsighted, so the teacher let me sit here." She then smiled slightly.

Su Xun blushed slightly. His voice was still the same as he remembered, but it was different from the voices of his other classmates. Although it was also a childish voice, it gave people a particularly pure feeling, like the spring water in the woods near his grandmother's house, "ding-dong ding-dong," that was the only way Su Xun could describe it for the time being.

After all the students were seated, Teacher Li went up to the podium and began to talk about the tasks and precautions for the new semester, followed by the distribution of new textbooks.

Su Xun has a habit of writing her name in large letters in the middle of the second page of a new book after it's been distributed, as if that makes her the protagonist and the book completely hers.

Pei Ke watched quietly as her new deskmate carefully wrote her name. Under the sunlight, her long eyelashes cast a shadow under her lower eyelids. Her eyes were focused on the book, and the pen made a "rustling" sound.

He was enveloped in a soft light, and his heart felt as if it had been gently brushed by a feather, leaving a ticklish sensation.

My deskmate is quite cute.

After finishing the Chinese textbook, Su Xun continued writing the math textbook. Once all the textbooks had her name engraved on them, Su Xun gently put down her pen.

Pei Ke suddenly realized what was happening, awkwardly turned her head, and glanced in her direction again. Seeing that she didn't react strangely, she couldn't help but feel a bit childishly unwilling and said, "It's just writing a name, why are you taking it so seriously?"

Su Xun's face flushed red instantly. Had he been staring at her the whole time?

In the early morning of September, the sunlight was no longer so intense, streaming warmly through the old glass windows into the classroom, occasionally punctuated by the chirping of cicadas. Two small figures sat by the window, one with an unnatural tilt of his head, the other blushing.

I could no longer hear the voices and laughter of my classmates around me. The scene was frozen in time, and many years later, when I think back on it, a warm feeling will rise in my heart.
