Chapter Nine: Reconciliation

Pei Ke and Su Xun were classmates again.

On the first day of school, Pei Ke greeted Su Xun, but Su Xun did not respond, probably still upset about Pei Ke's absence from the graduation ceremony.

Leaving without a word did leave Su Xun feeling disappointed for a while, but after a summer vacation, that disappointment had long since faded, and Su Xun wanted to wait for an explanation.

Suddenly, I felt incredibly willful, even pretentious. Pei Ke had no reason to tell me his private matters, yet I had taken them to heart.

When did I start caring about these things? I never used to have high expectations of other people.

When did it start?

During lunch break, all the students go to the cafeteria for lunch, which is always crowded. Su Xun usually goes 15 minutes later to avoid the peak hours.

The classroom was quiet, with only a few people in twos and threes.

Su Xun sat quietly in his seat, staring blankly at the camphor tree outside.

It's autumn again, but camphor trees don't lose their leaves in autumn. Even in winter, they remain lush and leafy, making the winter less desolate.

I want to go and see the intense autumn in the North described in the book.

Just then, I heard a rustling sound beside me.

Su Xun turned to look at his side and saw that Pei Ke had returned.

Finally, she couldn't resist and decided to break the silence that had been building between them for the past few days.

"You eat so fast." Su Xun casually made a remark, then immediately regretted it; it was such a terrible topic.

These past few days, seeing that Su Xun didn't want to talk to him, he hadn't taken the initiative to speak. Hearing Su Xun's words, he finally spoke.

"I didn't go to eat. Teacher Liu just called me, so I went to his office."

"Mmm," Su Xun responded softly, and then fell silent.

The atmosphere fell silent again.

"By the way, I'm sorry about graduation." Seeing that Su Xun was silent again, Pei Ke took the initiative to break the silence.

Pei Ke thought about it for the past few days and realized that Su Xun seemed to have some misunderstanding about him, probably because of his absence from the graduation ceremony.

"It's okay, it's just that I was very worried that day." Su Xun thought that since the two of them would continue to sit at the same table in the future, they should act more normally, and besides, this was originally just a small matter.

"I had some stomach problems those two days and spent a few days in the hospital, so I missed it and didn't have time to say goodbye to you all."

“We’re still together now, so there’s no need to say goodbye,” Su Xun replied.

The atmosphere finally returned to normal, and the two were still good deskmates.

After entering junior high school, the academic pressure increased significantly, from two main subjects in elementary school to seven, and the difficulty also increased.

Although English classes started in the third grade of elementary school, most parents and teachers did not pay much attention to them at that time. In English class, the teachers simply explained the text and did not have high expectations for the children.

Only some parents with good family circumstances realize the importance of learning foreign languages and send their children to various tutoring institutions to study English on weekends.

Pei Ke was like that; he had been studying outside since the fifth grade, so the first year of junior high school was not difficult for him.

But Su Xun was different. No one around her reminded her how important English was after entering junior high school, so she didn't pay attention in class. She could barely recite the twenty-six letters of the alphabet after graduating from elementary school, which is no exaggeration.

As a result, Su Xun couldn't keep up with the course progress at all.

She discovered that most of the students in the advanced class had proactively studied English during the summer vacation and generally had some basic knowledge. Only a few, like her, were carefree and went straight into the class without any preparation.

Su Xun, who was memorizing vocabulary at the moment, was filled with regret. Why didn't she study properly in class before? Now she was just staring blankly at a string of words in the textbook.

Five minutes later, still staring at the same word, he made sure he had memorized every letter.

Suddenly, Su Xun closed the book, wrote down the word he had just read on the draft paper next to him, and compared it with the one in the book. It was still wrong.

Su Xun resignedly put down her pen, lay face down on her textbook, and remained motionless, like a wilted little flower under the scorching sun.

Pei Ke, who was doing math problems next to him, seemed to notice his deskmate's movement. He stopped writing, turned around, and saw his deskmate lying on the table in a very lazy posture.

He couldn't help but chuckle softly, and poked the arm of the person next to him with the blunt end of his pen.

Feeling the touch on his arm, Su Xun stood up and turned his head to Pei Ke, his eyes full of doubt: "What's wrong? Is the teacher here?"

As if trying to confirm his guess, he looked around. The students were all studying with their heads down, and the surroundings were quiet as usual. He didn't see the teacher.

She turned back to look at Pei Ke with a puzzled expression, as if asking what had just happened.

Pei Ke watched Su Xun looking around blankly, appearing very cautious, and shook his head inwardly. He then wrote a few words on a piece of paper and handed it over.

"You can't memorize words like that. I'll teach you a better method after class."

Upon receiving the note, Su Xun quickly opened it and felt both embarrassed and touched after reading it.

He was embarrassed because his clumsy method of memorizing words had been discovered, but he was touched because Pei Ke was willing to teach him.

Although it wasn't the first time, I was still touched.

Just as Su Xun was about to slip the note into her desk, a tall figure appeared at the classroom door. The sound, which could be heard in every corner of the classroom, startled her.

"Hey you over there, yes, it's you. I've been watching you guys for a while now. You were looking around during self-study and even passing notes!" After saying that, he quickly walked over to Su Xun's desk.

Upon seeing who it was, Su Xun knew he was doomed.

She is the teacher checking on students during tonight's self-study period, and she is also the grade leader in charge of teaching tasks. Her usual conduct is comparable to that of the homeroom teacher, Ms. Liu, and she is the most feared figure among those troublesome students.
