Chapter 3 Motion Sickness Patches and the Green-feathered Sparrow in the Forest Farm
After assigning tasks to the three chickens, Gu Yiliu went to the kitchen to see how to prepare breakfast.
Having eaten fast food for several years since the apocalypse, she hadn't made breakfast in a long time and wasn't sure if she still could.
As soon as she stepped inside, Min Songyue waved to her, "Gu Yiliu, yours is here."
He handed her two sweet potatoes and three steamed buns, and then explained.
"Uncle Ma steamed it. If you want some, just give him a portion of your rations after you finish eating."
Gu Yiliu accepted it without hesitation and nodded.
"Anyway, I can't cook, so I plan to have Uncle Ma cook three meals a day for me. It'll be more lively if we eat together. I'll give him an extra 2 jin of rice and flour every month as a fee for his hard work. What about you?"
Gu Yiliu was indifferent; she was happy to have someone help with cooking. "Let Uncle Ma try cooking a meal tonight, and then we'll see how good his skills are."
“I thought you would be reluctant to part with the food,” Min Songyue said with a sigh. “In my memory, you have always been very protective of your food.”
It's not normal to be possessive of food; in the apocalypse, you have to fight for anything you find. The original owner of this body was also possessive of food, so Gu Yiliu understood perfectly. She glanced at him; she had a gut feeling that the original owner and this person probably didn't know each other in college, but she still cautiously probed with a question.
"From what I remember? You're talking like you know me very well?"
Min Songyue's eyes flickered, and he explained with a smile, "I don't know you very well. There aren't many female classmates in the same grade, so it's easy for me to find out about you."
That's true; there are far more men than women at the police academy. Gu Yiliu thought about it and didn't delve any further. She ended the topic with a single sentence: "People change."
After breakfast, Ma Quan led them through half an hour of speed and endurance training under the willow trees outside the outpost.
Gu Yiliu felt quite relaxed. Having superpowers made all the difference; she felt much stronger. During the same training, she only blushed and sweated, but Min Songyue couldn't manage it.
He was breathing heavily and laboredly.
"Uncle Ma, can we take a 10-minute break?"
“I don’t think Xiao Gu is tired.” Ma Quan shook his head with a smile. “If you’re tired, take a rest.”
Min Songyue looked at Gu Yiliu, who was carrying a bucket full of water in each hand and smiled brightly at him.
"..." It felt like they were mocking him, but he really wasn't as good as them.
After resting, they did not continue training.
A fellow villager arrived at the outpost; he was from a village under the jurisdiction of the Hongbuya outpost. He was building a house and making furniture, so he applied for a tree-cutting quota. He applied for it before Gu Yiliu and his companion even reported to the outpost. Today was the day for tree cutting, so he went to the outpost and called Ma Quan to go to the site.
“Okay, wait a moment,” Ma Quan replied, looking at Gu Yiliu and the other person, “Pack your things, let’s go take a look together.”
The three of them went with the villagers to Shifeng Forest Farm, which is located more than 50 kilometers east of the outpost.
The villagers' mode of transportation is a bicycle, and the outpost also has one; it's just right for two people to ride on one.
Gu Yiliu asked Min Songyue to give her a ride. The mountain road was rugged and uneven, so they rode slowly.
Gu Yiliu was looking around when she heard Min Songyue ask her a question.
"I'm going to eat out in the county on Sunday. Is there anything you need me to buy?" He asked this because he thought we were classmates and wanted to ask out of friendship. He was happy to help if I needed anything.
How will you get there?
"I'll get up early to take the bus." The man's tone was somewhat annoyed. There was a bus in the town that went directly to the county, but the distance between the town and the county was far, and it would take more than three hours by bus. Just thinking about it made him tired.
“I’m going too.” She was going to send money to the school to pay her tuition.
After they reached an agreement, they stopped talking.
"Cuckoo, cuckoo"
The call of a cuckoo came from overhead, and Gu Yiliu looked up in surprise.
"Cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo," three chickens told me that Officer Gu at the Hongbuya outpost could understand us and that we could contact her if we needed anything.
"Cuckoo, cuckoo"
Gu Yiliu mentally called out to the system, "Dian Dian, the cuckoo actually knows me?"
Dian Dian exclaimed excitedly, "The Yellow-bellied Horned Chicken is amazing! It completed the task you assigned so quickly!"
really.
Gu Yiliu nodded. He wondered how the yellow-bellied pheasant had managed to persuade the cuckoo. Its efficiency was impressive.
"If the cuckoo calls like that, won't a lot of animals know who I am? Won't I be too busy to handle them all?" Gu Yiliu was dumbfounded.
DianDian: "Don't worry, host. I'm not that powerful yet. For now, I can only receive emergency calls near where you are."
"And I will also help the host with the screening."
Gu Yiliu raised an eyebrow. That's good.
Next, along the way to Shifeng Forest Farm, you can hear the call of a cuckoo every now and then, dutifully promoting her.
Although the system didn't speak again, Gu Yiliu could sense that it was very happy.
The villagers wanted to cut down two trees, and Gu Yiliu watched as Ma Quan and the villagers talked.
"Host, there's a baby sparrow that's only been born in that tree. I heard its cries for help. Please save it. Its parents heard the cuckoo's call and flew over to find it. They'll be back soon."
"Will there be good reviews?"
Dian Dian gave a light and cheerful "Mmm".
Gu Yiliu responded with an "oh," and as soon as she finished speaking, she heard a faint cry for help.
After looking up for a long time, I finally saw a round bird's nest on a branch.
Gu Yiliu clicked to receive the alert and then told Ma Quan about the situation.
"Uncle Ma, there's a bird's nest in the tree, and there are birds inside. I can hear them chirping."
Ma Quan was taken aback, looked up, and saw it too.
He smiled at the villager and said, "Since this bird has made its home here first, you should take down the nest before cutting down the tree."
The villagers naturally had no objections, climbed the tree, took down the bird's nest, and handed it to Gu Yiliu.
Gu Yiliu looked at the bird chirping in the nest with its beak open. It seemed to be thanking Gu Yiliu and asking the system, "Dian Dian, did you receive the positive review?"
"We've only received 1%, so let's wait a bit longer; its parents haven't returned yet."
Gu Yiliu: "Are you so sure it will also receive positive reviews from its parents?"
"certainly."
As the villagers cut down the tree, Gu Yiliu finally heard two more bird calls.
"Chirp, chirp," my dear, my dear.
It flew up to the top of Gu Yiliu's head in no time.
Gu Yiliu moved the bird's nest to a safe spot, away from the logging site. He listened to the three birds chirping and chattering.
"Mom, Dad, she's the one who had someone save me!"
Gu Yiliu saw two green-feathered birds looking at her and chirping twice. "Thank you!"
Gu Yiliu nodded to the two birds and then returned the way he came.
The two green sparrows tilted their heads as they watched the direction she left.
After chirping for a while, one of the green-feathered sparrows flew to Gu Yiliu's side and asked her a question.
"Are you Officer Gu, the one Bugu was talking about?"
Gu Yiliu nodded.
A green sparrow landed on her shoulder. "You really can understand us?"
Gu Yiliu nodded again.
The green-feathered sparrow said nothing, then flapped its wings and flew away.
After a while, the green-feathered sparrow flew back to Gu Yiliu's side again, "Officer Gu, I've found something good for you, come with me quickly."
Gu Yiliu glanced around and saw that the villagers hadn't finished cutting down the trees yet, so she followed them.
The green-feathered sparrow led her to a patch of grass and gestured for her to part the grass.
Gu Yiliu dug it open and found a nest of grayish-green eggs.
"This isn't your egg, is it?"
The green-feathered sparrow nodded. "Wild duck eggs, laid by the ducks raised by the forestry workers. They lay them everywhere, there are several nests of duck eggs around here. Officer Gu, you should take them. If you don't take them, we'll end up eating them anyway."
"..."
Gu Yiliu accepted it with a smile.
Just as I was picking up the duck eggs, I heard Dian Dian's excited voice, "Great review! The approval rating is 6%! Host, thank you!"
"You're welcome!" Gu Yiliu was also very happy. There were 12 wild duck eggs in total. Judging from the number, no one had visited this duck nest except for ducks. He didn't even know if some of the eggs were still edible.
"Gu Yiliu, what are you doing sneaking around here!"
A voice suddenly came from behind.
Gu Yiliu was still startled and turned to let Min Songyue come over, "Put the duck eggs away and take them back to the outpost."
"...How did you know there were duck eggs here?"
"you guess?"
Back at the outpost, Ma Quan examined the wild duck eggs and concluded, "There are a few eggs that we can't eat. If we incubate them a little longer, they should hatch into ducklings."
Gu Yiliu was taken aback for a moment, "Then let those chickens hatch them, fatten them up, and then eat them." After all, raising chickens is raising ducks, and raising ducks is raising ducks too.
How did you find so many wild duck eggs?
"It's all thanks to those green-feathered birds; without them, I wouldn't have found it."
Ma Quan found it somewhat amusing.
Take out the edible duck eggs, and let the three chickens incubate the rest.
"I'm a rooster! I can't hatch!" The chicken, which Min Songyue almost caught and ate, resisted.
"They'll be out soon, they'll only be incubating for a few days, you just have to get through each day." Gu Yiliu looked at the chickens, knowing that those who ate her food had to listen to her.
"..." People will make things difficult for chickens.
Despite its resistance, it hatched anyway.
The rooster incubating its eggs startled Ma Quan, who lingered near the henhouse frequently.
Ignoring the people and the chickens and ducks, Gu Yiliu carefully washed his hands and ran back to his room.
With a 3% increase in positive reviews, she can enter the prize draw again. I wonder what the gift will be this time.
"DianDian, I need money again this time! 10 yuan isn't enough to pay my tuition!"
Dian Dian remained silent and brought up the lottery panel, placing it in front of her.
Gu Yiliu took a deep breath, clicked start, and counted until the wheel had spun eight times before clicking pause.
A blue and white medicine box slowly appeared on the turntable, with the words "Motion Sickness Patch" written on it.
Gu Yiliu knew at a glance that it was for her: "You even know I'll get carsick tomorrow?" Tomorrow is Sunday, and she's going to town to send money.
In the 1980s, buses still used diesel as engine fuel, which smelled terrible.
"Dian Dian doesn't know."
Gu Yiliu didn't believe it. She snorted. This system was no ordinary system; its true colors had already been revealed.
A box of motion sickness patches contained four patches, and Gu Yiliu carefully put the box away. He applied them to the sides of his ears the next day. The entire carriage was filled with a nauseating, fermented stench, and soon after boarding, the sounds of vomiting filled the carriage.
Min Songyue, who was traveling with them, vomited until his face turned pale.
Gu Yiliu kept his distance from him and closed his eyes to sleep. But the unpleasant smell lingered around his nose, making it impossible for him to fall asleep.
After getting off the bus, Gu Yiliu and Min Songyue parted ways. She went to send money to the school; she still owed the school 125 yuan in tuition fees.
After thinking about it, Gu Yiliu sent all 10 yuan he won in the lottery to the school, leaving him with 115 yuan.
After sending the money, she planned to wander around and explore the county town.
As I was walking, I heard the system issue an alarm.
"Host, there's a dog calling you from the next street. Someone's trying to kidnap its little owner. Go check it out."
