Chapter 23 23. Obedient "Hey you?"
She wore light makeup, her skin was glowing white, a touch of pink after exercise was reflected on her cheeks, and her teeth were biting her lower lip helplessly.
Shi Jingzhou looked away after he finished speaking.
The pain disappeared, and Mi Yanyan wondered if she was hallucinating.
The word "yes" came out of his calm mouth for no reason. Was he feeling sorry for her, or for the God of Wealth kite?
The kite wasn't expensive, but selling it in a shop meant it had to be priced higher. The owner happily said eighty. Or perhaps it was unlucky for them, as business people, to let the God of Wealth go like that.
She completely understood and said, "Why don't we pick up the kite?" It had only been used once, so it would be a waste to throw it away.
"Need not."
"Then don't be angry." Mi Yanyan softened her voice, turned sideways and looked at him with a smile.
The topic did not continue. Shi Jingzhou looked at the time and asked her what she wanted to eat. He handed her a few restaurants to choose from. Unexpectedly, they were all Sichuan and Hunan cuisine with a strong flavor.
"Are you sure you want to choose from these?" Shi Jingzhou doesn't like spicy food, so no matter which one she chooses, it won't suit his taste.
"Choose, pick what you like to eat." He answered frankly.
After much deliberation, they finally decided on a fusion restaurant. She mentioned its name, and Shi Jingzhou naturally responded, "Help me navigate."
The two of them each performed their duties, the navigation's sweet voice sounded, the weather was clear and cloudless all the way, and the feeling of a date instantly rose.
They were seated. There were only a few tables occupied outside of mealtime, and Shi Jingzhou took the menu and waited for her to make her decision. After the order was placed, the truly awkward atmosphere began to unfold. The strangers, a man and a woman, faced each other as they waited for their food, their eyes fixed on each other in an epic scene of staring eyes.
They slept in the same bed and kissed just as much, but this relatively silent first date was even more uncomfortable than the day of the blind date.
"How's your hand?" Shi Jingzhou said, then he stood up and sat next to Mi Yanyan, picking up her right hand and looking at it carefully.
Blood dried in the cracks between the nails, and a small wound was slowly healing.
"It's okay, it will grow back soon." She moved a little closer to the window.
Shi Jingzhou followed suit and replied seriously, "It's better not to touch the water."
Fortunately, the food was served quickly enough. Mi Yanyan hummed and picked up the chopsticks, taking a breath that was barely noticeable because it pulled the wound. The person next to her had no intention of sitting back opposite her. He picked up the food and put it in her bowl, replacing the chopsticks with a small spoon and placing it in place.
"Hello?" he asked.
Mi Yanyan choked on her trachea, her face flushed red as she looked for water. After taking a gulp, she said, "No, no, it's too spicy."
He patted her back twice, which was bent from coughing, and her breathing became smoother, but her heart was about to jump out of her chest.
"Okay, eat it yourself." She signaled that there was no need to film anymore.
Shi Jingzhou withdrew his hand, glanced at the food on the table, hesitated for a long time, and then drank a sip of water.
"Is it not to your taste? These are the only non-spicy dishes here." Mi Yanyan was very cautious when ordering. She only ordered two Sichuan dishes and tried to choose lighter flavors for the others. She didn't expect that even the broccoli in the soup was soaked in dried chilies.
"You can eat it. You don't eat much during the fat-loss period." Shi Jingzhou took a sip and stopped. Perhaps because he was bored, he started to think about snatching her spoon.
After looking him up and down, Mi Yanyan was sure that Shi Jingzhou did not need to lose fat. His body proportions were well coordinated and he looked very pleasing to the eye when he took off his clothes.
A lot of images flooded into my mind, and the crab roe tofu slid softly into the spoon, coming at the right time.
He raised his body sideways and made an "ah" sound with his mouth.
"You're coaxing a child."
Mi Yanyan's face flushed as she looked around. The few tables of guests had already been attracted by them. From time to time, they would cast a few curious glances at her. When their eyes met, they would quickly look away. When they lowered their heads, there was still a smile on the corners of their mouths.
He held the spoon in his right hand and supported it with his left hand to prevent the oil from dripping. He looked stubborn and said, "I won't leave until you eat this." Mi Yanyan had no choice but to lower her head to hold the fallen hair and opened her mouth to eat it.
It’s not the first time he feeds me. I don’t feel anything at home, but it’s so embarrassing when I go out.
"Children are more obedient than you." Shi Jingzhou took away the porcelain spoon and was considering what to feed the child next.
Suddenly, an illusion struck her. Shi Jingzhou's fierce image gradually faded from her memory. The way he coaxed her with a smile on his face was both stubborn and childish. If he became a father in the future, he would probably be as contradictory as he is now, not annoying.
The sudden thought scared me. It must be because it was too hot today and my brain was confused, otherwise I wouldn't have been thinking about these unattainable things for no reason.
Shi Jingzhou sits upright, has good dining etiquette, and has received a good education since childhood. It is normal for him to show his concern for his wife by acting in a corresponding way.
He said he would treat his marriage well and that no matter who became his wife, they would be treated the same and there would be no need to bear too much burden.
The skirt was getting tighter and tighter. Mi Yanyan made a quick decision not to eat any more. She pointed to her slightly bulging belly and said with a pout, "Stop feeding me."
Shi Jingzhou lowered his eyes and looked over. It was quite cute.
The phone on the table vibrated and rang. Mi Yanyan turned it over and swiped the screen upwards.
"Mi Yanyan, is this us from the Second Traffic Police Brigade of Nancheng? We had a traffic accident with you and the vehicle involved has been found. You need to come to the Traffic Police Brigade tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 PM to coordinate the handling of the matter."
Many days had passed since the accident, and she replied "wait a moment", then opened the surgery scheduling records in the work group.
"I'm sorry, I can't take a day off tomorrow. Can I change another day?" Jianuo has two important operations tomorrow and she must be present.
Shi Jingzhou touched her arm. Mi Yanyan turned her head, looked at him and whispered, "I'll go."
"Are you free? Tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock." she repeated.
"Okay." Shi Jingzhou nodded.
"Well," Mi Yanyan paused, "can I let my husband handle it?"
The restaurant's glass was wiped especially clean, and the reflection showed a man supporting the table with one hand, with the corners of his mouth raised.
"Okay, come on time tomorrow." The other party hung up the phone.
Just half an hour after two o'clock the next day, Mi Yanyan received a message from Shi Jingzhou saying that the accident had been handled. She replied thank you, put her phone away and went into the operating room.
Shi Jingzhou came out of the traffic police brigade. Secretary Zhou had a gloomy expression on his face. After the two of them got into the car, he turned around and reported.
"Boss Shi, Shi Zekai went to Mingyuan Hospital today and came back to ask Boss Liu about the health of the old man from the Mi family. I asked someone to check it out. The old man was hospitalized a week ago. He has a late-stage tumor and a sudden cerebral infarction."
Shi Jingzhou's face darkened instantly. He held the phone and thought for a moment, then dialed the number, but no one answered.
Secretary Zhou handed over a number and said, "Jianuo front desk."
After answering the call, the girl greeted him politely. Shi Jingzhou told Uncle Wu to drive to Jianuo, and asked what time Mi Yanyan could have the surgery.
When Sun Siyuan heard that it was Sister Yan's handsome husband, he quickly ran upstairs and ran back.
"Brother-in-law, it will take about two hours."
"Are there any other operations later?" he asked.
After confirming the appointment form, Sun Siyuan replied: "Not yet, I've finished everything this morning."
Mi Yanyan just pushed open the door of the operating room and stood there in a daze. She took off her mask, stepped on the medical waste bin, and threw it in.
"What happened?" Mi Yanyan rushed to the operating room door to wait for her, feeling vaguely uneasy.
Shi Jingzhou stood up from the wall and walked in front of her.
"There's a situation. Don't worry, just listen to me."
Seeing his serious expression, Mi Yanyan became more gentle and nodded in agreement.
"Grandpa is in the hospital and has just passed the critical period."
Shi Jingzhou had said many more bloody, cruel and arrogant nonsense, but just stating the fact, when he met her wet eyes, he immediately felt too much pity.
"Is it serious? Has the tumor worsened?" Logically speaking, the old man's condition is almost certain to end. Fortunately, the old man has a slow metabolism, and with regular conservative treatment, he can theoretically prolong his life for some time.
Shi Jingzhou patted her head and comforted her: "Go change your clothes first, the car is downstairs."
Uncle Wu rarely drove fast, and Mi Yanyan said nothing the whole time, letting Shi Jingzhou hold her hand. The smell of disinfectant on her body had not yet dissipated, and she soon entered another solemn space.
The VIP ward was silent. She ran inside, and Shi Jingzhou followed closely behind her. When they reached the ward door, she stopped and looked through the round glass. She could only see half of the quilt. Just as she was about to push the door open, a pretty figure came out from behind the wall with a smile.
Both of them paused for a moment, and the other person reluctantly called out "Sister", and Mi Yanyan walked straight in.
Mi Xiner was so angry that she gritted her teeth and wanted to explode. She raised her eyes and saw Shi Jingzhou who was above her. She swallowed the dirty words back and didn't even dare to squeeze out the word "brother-in-law".
"Oh, Yanyan is here." Mi Wenzhong put down his crossed legs, sat up straight with embarrassment, and a few wrinkles appeared on his old-fashioned face due to smiling.
She didn't respond, but leaned over and pressed against the person on the bed, calling out softly.
After two sounds, the old man half-opened his eyes. Blood flow had been restored after the surgery, but the risk of complications hadn't passed. She bit her lip and grasped his bony, vein-ridden hand, tears welling in her eyes.
"Xiaoyan." Mi Zhenhua finally spoke.
"Well, he was fine a few days ago." She swallowed back a sob.
"I'm old." The old man forced a smile at the corners of his eyes. He tried to use more strength in his hands but it was too weak. In the end, Mi Yanyan clenched her hands again.
"Where is Jingzhou?" he asked.
Shi Jingzhou strode over from the foot of the bed, leaned over and called out, "Grandpa."
"Here you are, Jingzhou. I'm not feeling well and I'll probably have to stay in the hospital soon. I'll ask you to take care of Xiaoyan."
"I will." Shi Jingzhou said, hugged Mi Yanyan, and took out a piece of paper from the bedside table and gave it to her.
"Okay, okay, as long as you're all fine." The old man said and closed his eyes again. Mi Yanyan turned around and stopped looking.
The quiet outside the ward turned into a quarrel. Mi Yanyan closed the door and went out, only to find Mi Wenzhong standing at the emergency exit, facing off with Zhang Qiaoshu. The two men were incompatible, and when he saw Mi Yanyan, he saw her as a savior, beckoning her over and unleashing a barrage of abuse.
"It's fine if I didn't know the old man was sick, but you didn't know either. Why are you so busy all day?" Zhang Qiaoshu ignored the etiquette of a daughter-in-law and was furious. "Mi Wenzhong, you are not a human being. You only knew how to call in outsiders to take care of us, but kept us mother and daughter in the dark. What are you thinking?"
Mi Wenzhong looked like a dead pig that was not afraid of boiling water, not feeling the slightest bit of pain or discomfort. He smiled and said, "How can I feel at ease? You said you were not feeling well and couldn't take care of the old man, so you went out to relax. Yanyan was busy with work and I didn't want to disturb her. Isn't this a kind gesture?"
Zhang Qiaoshu has been watching this kind of behavior for half her life and no longer feels any emotion at all. The person inside is destined to live and die and has reached the age of knowing the destiny. All she cares about is Mingyuan, the popular commodity.
Thinking of this, she became even more angry at her daughter for not living up to her expectations. She picked up her bag and threw it at Mi Yanyan, complaining in a harsh voice with tears in her eyes, "I really hate you Mi family. The old ones are useless, and the young ones are useless."
Mi Yanyan stood there in a daze, her mind filled with the image of her grandfather who was so thin that his bones were visible. She didn't make a sound even when she was hit by the pain.
Shi Jingzhou was coming out of the clinic and saying goodbye to the doctor when he saw someone from a distance. Someone shouted "Stop!" from four or five meters away.
The three of them looked and saw him running towards them.
