Chapter 5

Chapter 5

Su Mu lay on the bed, carefully recalling what his sister had just said.

Was my decision too impulsive? But if I quit after only one day of practice, wouldn't that be too embarrassing?

I remember how my family used to support me no matter what I did, but I couldn't keep going for more than two or three days. My parents would just comfort me, while Ren Dong would mock me mercilessly.

Should we be ruthless this time and prove ourselves to Honeysuckle?

As he pondered these thoughts, Su Mu drifted off to sleep.

It was noon when I woke up the next day.

Su Mu shouted as he quickly put on his clothes, yelling, "Father, Mother! Why didn't you call me?!"

Mr. Zhao said leisurely, "Don't you want to work hard on your own? Do you still need us to wake you up?"

Su Mu was angry but dared not vent. "I'm leaving. Remember to leave me some dinner." After saying that, he quickly ran towards the martial arts arena.

When he arrived, everyone was already having lunch. Su Mu knew he was going to lose face again, so he silently went to the side and started doing push-ups.

I absolutely cannot fall behind again!

After everyone finished resting, they arrived at the training ground and began training quietly.

When Old Li saw Su Mu arrive, he smiled but didn't say anything, and continued to lead everyone in training.

After seeing this, Su Mu silently started practicing along with him.

Time flew by and the sun had already set. Old Li dismissed everyone, while Su Mu went to the side and began his own training.

Old Li walked over after seeing this and asked, "Have you made up your mind?"

Su Mu hummed in agreement, but his body didn't stop moving.

Old Li sat down next to Su Mu. "There was someone like you who came here before. Her name was Bai Tan. She was just a little girl, but she was very talented. Captain Wu took pity on her and gave her a steamed bun. She followed the captain and later said she wanted to join the demon-slaying team. At first, we all looked down on her, but she suddenly grabbed the captain's knife and slashed at him. Captain Wu quickly grabbed a knife from one of his teammates to react, but she was not to be outdone and slashed at the captain again and again. Although she didn't have any fancy moves, her speed and reaction were top-notch. Every slash hit the captain in unexpected places, but she stopped when she was in the most danger. After seeing these moves, not only did we look at her with new respect, but even Captain Wu praised her highly."

Su Mu stopped what he was doing. "And then?"

"Later, Captain Wu personally taught her how to use a knife, and she went from a small-time vagrant to a remarkable exorcist. After that, she easily killed several low-level monsters with her small stature. From then on, she and the captain were practically unstoppable outside the city, and they wiped out all the idle monsters outside the city. But in one operation, we encountered a mid-level monster. At first, they dealt with it relatively easily. After they worked together to cut off the monster's head, a woman suddenly emerged from the monster's body. She said that the two of them had actually killed her beloved pet. She never expected that a high-level monster would appear in this remote place. At this time, the two of them had no way to retreat. Some of our team members even threw down their weapons and fell down. In the end, she slaughtered them one by one. Seeing that things were not going well, Captain Wu ordered us to retreat. He and Bai Tan stayed behind to deal with the female demon. But the result was predictable. Only the captain was seriously injured and fell at the city gate. From then on, the captain became more and more silent and always trained alone."

"Then Captain Wu's injury on his back was from that time, wasn't it?"

Old Li nodded helplessly.

"People like us in remote areas can only train ourselves and take up arms to protect ourselves, but the effect is minimal. I asked the captain why he didn't join the team of the strongest demon exorcist, Lan Jueming. His strength would definitely be even higher there. But he said that he also wanted to go there to improve his strength so as to avenge Bai Tan. However, if he left, the people here would be even more powerless to resist the attacks of those monsters, so he decided to stay and protect this place."

After hearing these words, Su Mu realized how naive his reasons for coming here were.

"Old Li, I'll go where the captain can't go. When I become an even more powerful demon slayer than Lan Jueming, your whole team will come to celebrate for me!"

Although Old Li didn't want to hurt the child's self-esteem, he couldn't help but retort, "You think you can take me on?"

"Hey Lao Li, starting tomorrow you're going to train me twice as hard. I'm going to learn all of the captain's skills!"

"Alright, alright, but don't complain about being tired later!"

The night before, Su Mu was still pondering whether joining the group was the right or wrong decision. But Old Li's words today made him realize that if the monsters weren't eliminated, their home would be filled with danger every day. Ren Dong had said that high-level monsters wouldn't come to such remote places, but that had been proven wrong. He couldn't believe what would happen if a monster were to break into his home. Therefore, as the man of the house, he couldn't continue to be so mediocre. Although he wasn't particularly talented, or perhaps he had no talent at all, hard work wouldn't let him down. He believed that if he didn't have talent, then he would persevere!
