Chapter 10 The Chang Family's Daughter Has Grown Up
Chang Xixi was speechless for a moment. She wanted to marry Gu Rongyu, but she might not dare to do so. Was the village chief coming to force a marriage? Suddenly, she felt dizzy, thinking of this dynasty, if an unmarried woman had an affair with a man, she would be thrown into a pig cage.
Going to die again?
"Mom, what will happen if I don't get married? Will I die? Or will I never get married again?"
Dou choked and didn't dare to tell her the truth. She just shook her head and asked her what she thought.
What could Chang Xixi say? She could only claim that it was a misunderstanding and that she hadn't meant that at all. She also told Dou about the day when Gu Rongyu saved her with buns.
I sent him food because I felt sorry for him, and it was not a personal relationship at all, so Mrs. Dou should not think too much about it.
Seeing that Chang Xixi was speaking sincerely, Dou Shi did not take it seriously. She asked Chang Xixi to go outside for a while while she went to talk to the village chief first.
The village chief is here?
Chang Xixi pulled Dou into the house. The second brother heard the noise outside and opened the window with difficulty to look out.
"I said, it has nothing to do with Gu Rongyu! Let's just think of it as us breaking off the engagement together! It's not like we haven't been broken off before, so what are we afraid of?" When she saw the village chief, Chang Xixi made her intentions clear.
"This matter is no longer up to you. You and Mr. Gu will get married tomorrow, which will be an explanation to the villagers." The village chief learned from Dou that Chang Xixi had gone to deliver lunch to Gu Rongyu early in the morning.
Not getting married yet?
Everyone must break the backbone of the Chang family!
The village chief put down the marriage documents and left, running to the east end of the village and told Gu Rongyu, who was about to leave, to get married tomorrow.
Gu Rongyu was stunned for a while in surprise, and just coughed and said that he was too anxious, and asked if he could wait for a few days so that he could recuperate as his health was not good.
The village chief said that the longer the night, the more dreams there are. Others are looking forward to getting married, but he is hiding away. As the saying goes, one must get married first before he can take the imperial examination.
Gu Rongyu had no choice but to nod and say yes, and then added that there had not been a matchmaker to propose marriage and there was no betrothal gift, which was against etiquette and rules.
The village chief told him that he didn't need to worry about the witness and matchmaker, as he would be both. This time, he went to the girl's house first before coming to see her.
As soon as the village chief left, a dark figure came down from the beam, muttering in dissatisfaction, "Young Master, can we still leave here?"
Gu Rongyu ignored the black shadow and stared at the empty bowl on the table in a daze. Then he looked at the clean chopsticks in his hand. His fingers were slightly red and his eyebrows were slightly raised.
As the wedding day was approaching, uninvited guests arrived. Having suffered a loss last time, Second Aunt took this opportunity to come with a basket of sweet potatoes and a servant.
"Hey! Is sister-in-law busy? Why can't you see Xixi? She's a girl who's about to get married, so she really shouldn't be out in front of people."
With that, Second Aunt went straight into Chang Xixi's room. Fortunately, it was time for a nap.
Chang Xixi was in the space, staring at the pile of money in a daze. She wondered what kind of livelihood a woman could do in ancient times and that was acceptable to others.
She felt someone beside the bed, and suddenly opened her eyes. A woman's face with makeup appeared in her eyes, and she screamed in fright!
Second Aunt was actually frightened by her cry and started cursing, "You kid, you've lived in a big house before, how come you have no manners at all and are so jumpy."
Chang Xixi smiled instead of getting angry, "Second Aunt, you haven't suffered enough from the loss you suffered last time, so you're here to cause trouble again? If I were you, I'd leave here as soon as possible."
"You have no manners at all. I will stay at your house for a few days, until the day you get married." After saying this, she left embarrassedly, twisting her waist.
Chang Xixi cursed in her heart, thinking that the weasel had no good intention in paying a New Year's visit to the chicken.
Dou was in the yard, thinking that the two had quarreled, and was busy. Just as she was about to get up, she saw her second aunt coming out of the house with a gloomy expression on her face.
"Sister-in-law, don't argue with the child. She is still young and doesn't understand."
"Mom, why are you saying nice things to her! If it weren't for her... our Xiaohong wouldn't have died. I don't know how many eggs she would have laid for our family."
As soon as the words fell, Second Aunt was furious. Chang Xixi was picking a fight with her, waiting for her to get familiar with her so that she could take her money and run away.
She didn't know what kind of people her elder sister-in-law and elder brother were. They were just good people. Even if the money disappeared, they would not suspect her.
"Xixi, what are you talking about? Didn't your uncle pay you back? This time, I came here to arrange your marriage. Don't be ungrateful."
When the second aunt reminded her, Chang Xixi was about to run out, but Dou Shi grabbed her hand and said, "Xixi, your wedding is coming soon, you can't go out now."
Chang Xixi stopped and looked back at her smug second aunt. She rolled her eyes, turned back to her room, and slammed the door shut.
Sitting on the bamboo stool, she thought about how to meet Gu Rongyu and tell him that this marriage was not what he wanted! She found that Gu Rongyu didn't seem to want to have anything to do with the people here.
I wish I could die now so that it doesn’t matter who owns the house. I just don’t want anyone to get it for free.
A day passed in a flash.
By the time Chang Xixi found an opportunity, her second aunt was already snoring on the kang opposite. Dou suggested that she let her second aunt sleep in the same room with her. She also said that she wanted to teach Chang Xixi some tips on husband and wife, so Dou agreed.
God damn, there's no good intention in the way husbands and wives behave.
Chang Xixi had just opened her eyes and took advantage of the darkness to go to Gu Rongyu to explain clearly that he could cancel the engagement at any time. She couldn't let a man be bound by the traditional order just because of her.
As soon as she stood up, she heard something coming into the window. Looking in the moonlight, Chang Xixi saw a ball of paper.
She opened it and saw a note written in elegant small regular script, signed by Gu Rongyu. It said she needn't worry, as he had agreed and would not regret the engagement, and it was for her reputation.
