Chapter 11: Big Brother and Father Come Home
"Thank you, brother. You must be tired after traveling."
Chang Sheng hurried to see Chang Hai and told him to bring the ox cart back from Chang Xixi, as he had to go and see if the groom was tired. He then rushed into the house.
Dou was extremely happy. Her eldest son only came back once every one or two months, and he would have someone bring back the money he earned, along with a letter to let them know he was safe.
The head of the family came back in the evening and bought a few feet of red cloth and some festive cakes and fruits in the town.
Seeing Chang Xixi looking left and right, he said that she had grown into a girl and was going to get married, and her husband was the village scholar, and he was happy for her.
Late at night, the moon was bright and the stars were sparse. The head of the family asked Chang Sheng to carry Chang Hai to see Gu Rongyu, and they didn't come back for a long time.
After Dou settled the two brothers, she went to the pig shed to feed the pigs. Chang Xixi heard their conversation and asked, "Boss, are all these things expensive for you?"
"Isn't this the child's wedding? We may not be a wealthy family, but we can at least make ends meet. I can still earn some money, so let's just buy it."
Dou sighed, her figure stretched out in the light of the oil lamp. "What about Chang Hai and Chang Sheng? No one in our family is willing to marry them into our family."
"No, there's also Chang Hai? He makes money alone, and we can add some more."
Dou said it was a good idea, saying that Xixi's marriage was more important, and that Gu Rongyu was also a miserable man, so we had to treat him well after he came to our family.
Upon hearing this, Chang Xixi turned around and went into the house. Her tears didn't burst, but her nose felt a little sore. She made up her mind to make money to support her family and not be as arrogant as the original owner.
The wedding is approaching.
Second Aunt was also happy to watch the fun. The neighbors said that Xixi had brought a sickly child home, and she wanted to see if the child was going to die.
The morning dewdrops shine brightly against the green grass under the sunlight, without the noise of suona and gongs and drums.
Gu Rongyu, helped by the black shadow, put on the wedding dress sent by Chang Hai. It was just a long gown with a big red flower on it.
The black shadow grinned as he put the only jade pendant on the young master. The dark color had a hint of red, and that red color was like scarlet blood, hanging around his waist.
The auspicious time is approaching.
Chang Hai walked to the front of the dilapidated house. Gu Rongyu looked normal, with no expression of joy on his pale face, except that his brows were a little relaxed.
This subtle change didn't even register with the dark shadow that had been beside him all day. Gu Rongyu pointed to a bundle on the side and said, "Brother, could you help me carry my gift?"
"Okay."
First, bow to heaven, second, bow to parents, third, bow to each other as husband and wife!
A loud voice rang out in the courtyard. A pair of red candles were burning brightly on the table. Chang Xixi looked through the red veil and saw a festive atmosphere.
There were several tables filled with food and wine in the yard outside the door, and it was lively and peaceful.
Zhang Xiucai was the most educated man in the village, so naturally he was invited to share in the joyous occasion. When Gu Rongyu toasted him, the two of them were on edge.
"A moment of spring night is worth a thousand gold, I wonder if Brother Gu's body can bear it."
Gu Rongyu glanced at Zhang Xiucai's handsome face, curled his lips slightly, but there was no smile on his pale face.
"Don't worry, Brother Zhang. Xixi and I will take care of the affairs between husband and wife. As for you, it's not a big deal if you keep trying to steal chickens but end up losing rice. Let your family marry you off soon."
Mr. Zhang's face turned pale from choking. He finished the wine in his hand, waved his sleeves and sat down.
Gu Rongyu ignored them and followed the neighbors and fellow villagers in toasting one by one before she had the chance to enter the bridal chamber.
Chang Xixi was sitting on the edge of the bed when she heard footsteps. She was so nervous that she tightly grasped her red skirt, and her palms were sweating.
Gu Rongyu lifted the veil without hesitation. He was stunned for only a second before turning around and handing Chang Xixi a cup of tea. "You haven't eaten much all day. Drink some water first. Mom will cook dumplings for you later."
"I'm sorry, I didn't expect things to turn out like this."
"No problem." Gu Rongyu said calmly, and then he undressed in front of Chang Xixi. He glanced at the wine glass on the table and asked, "Do you want to drink the wedding wine?"
"You are not in good health and you drank a lot outside just now. Please skip this cup." Chang Xixi did not dare to look at Gu Rongyu's pale face and lowered her head.
Dou brought a bowl of fried eggs and half-cooked dumplings, and the two of them shared the meal. Chang Hai peeked through the crack in the door and saw that the two of them were in a good mood, so he locked the door from the outside.
Chang Xixi and Gu Rongyu looked at each other in surprise. This... she spoke first.
"I know you're only marrying me for my reputation. It's not necessary."
"Let's go to bed." Gu Rongyu opened the quilt and lay down directly. The red candle was still burning. According to custom, the red candle had to burn all night.
Chang Xixi listened to the even breathing sound, and angrily lay down on the bed, pulled a corner of the quilt over herself and fell into a deep sleep.
The dark shadow on the beam widened his eyes when he saw this tacit scene. Other people's wedding nights were filled with passion and excitement, but the young master fell asleep immediately.
The next day.
Chang Xixi opened her eyes wide as soon as the rooster crowed. The sleeping face of the man next to her was so handsome. She stared at him like a nympho for a long time, then got up and put on her clothes.
Chang Xixi saw her family's blessings yesterday and their genuine happiness for her in the past few days, and felt guilty when she thought of the original owner's actions.
As I walked out of the room, Dou came to meet me, "Why are you up so early? Why don't you sleep a little longer?"
"Mom, it's not a big deal."
Dad and my eldest brother sat at the pale table, drinking a bowl of porridge, a few yellow steamed buns with white steam coming out of them, and a bowl of pickles.
The eldest brother smiled and called Chang Xixi over. "Dad and I left after breakfast. The foreman only took two days off. We are all happy to see you get married."
