Chapter 19 The Thief Li
He secretly made a plan in his mind, exchanged a few words, put away his sachet, stuffed it into his arms, and walked towards Dou's house with a vicious look on his face.
Chang Sheng came out of the yard leaning on a crutch. His skinny body had gained some weight, and his skinny cheeks had become rounder.
Li became even more certain of what she was thinking. It must be Chang Xixi who used her own personal money to hire a miracle doctor to treat Gu Rongyu. Otherwise, how could such a sickly person suddenly... be cured?
The good ones are still inexplicable.
Seeing that there were not many eggs in the cabinet, Chang Xixi took twenty or so copper coins and went out to buy eggs from Dou's house.
Li felt that the opportunity had come. Since she couldn't wait for Gu Rongyu to die, and she was not allowed to take the initiative, she saw Chang Xixi cherishing the wooden box so much last time.
That's where the money should be!
I walked around the wall, found a spot, and then went to the nearest neighbor's house to borrow a ladder. I climbed up the wall and jumped down.
The black shadow noticed the movement and hurried into the house to report. Gu Rongyu put down the pen when he saw him coming.
Li went straight to the couple's room and searched through all the drawers and cabinets but couldn't find the wooden box. Even on the dressing table, there was no valuable jewelry, only a gold-plated bracelet.
She had come here for nothing. She tried hard to put the bracelet on her arm, but she looked everywhere but couldn't find anything good. She sighed and cursed Chang Xixi for being too shrewd and not leaving her any loopholes.
Calculating the time when Chang Xixi would come back, she walked towards the door, smoothed her hair and clothes, and then reached out to open the door.
The door opened with a clang, but Li's mouth twitched. How did this girl come back so quickly? Without changing her expression, she said, "Hey...you're back?"
Chang Xixi was stunned. How did she get in? Did Gu Rongyu open the door?
As she thought about it, her eyes unconsciously stayed on Li's wrist. That was her gilded bracelet. Gu Rongyu would not give her things to Li.
"Aunt, why don't you sit for a while when you come? You just leave when you see me come back?" As she said this, she started to pull Li. Li felt guilty and didn't want to stay here for a moment. She avoided looking at Chang Xixi.
"Xixi, this is not a good way to pull and tug. People have three urgent needs, and now I'm in a hurry to go to the toilet. Let go of your hand."
"You can go, Auntie, but we have to make things clear. For example, how did you get in here? And where did you get that bracelet on your hand? If you can't explain it clearly, you'll suffer."
Chang Xixi simply stretched out her hand to block the person at the door. If she didn't let anyone in, Li wouldn't be able to climb over the wall either. The two of them were deadlocked, and then Gu Rongyu walked out of the study.
There was a trace of confusion on his regular facial features, and his delicate eyebrows were twisted together.
"My wife?"
"I accidentally fell asleep at the desk. Why did my aunt stand in the yard? I heard someone climbing over the wall. I thought it was a thief, but it turned out to be my aunt. So everything is fine. It was a false alarm."
Chang Xixi raised her eyebrows and said, "Oh? So you climbed over the wall to get in..." After closing the door, she shouted to the villagers who were doing farm work around her.
In less than a cup of tea, the villagers came one after another, either carrying hoes or holding shovels and sticks.
Chang Xixi was shouting that there was a thief in the house.
The village chief also rushed over after hearing the news. Seeing that there was no thief in the yard but Li, his face turned pale, with a hint of toughness in his eyes, and he kept pinching his handkerchief in his hand.
"Which thief came from Xiao Chang's family? It's only your aunt."
Soon, a villager came out from the side of the courtyard wall in a panic, carrying a ladder. He put the ladder on the ground and said:
"I just lent the ladder to Mrs. Li. She said Mrs. Dou needed a ladder to get something at home, so I lent it to her. I didn't expect it to be placed outside the wall of Mrs. Chang's courtyard."
Even the dumbest person could see that the thief was none other than Li.
Chang Xixi was furious. She had given face to Li before because she was her uncle's wife, and later she did so for Dou's sake.
If she doesn't do something tough, one day he will take advantage of her absence and sell the house without her and Gu Rongyu knowing!
She only recognized the Dou family as her relatives! She had no feelings for this sudden aunt and uncle.
Before she could open her mouth to accuse him, Li said directly, "Xixi misunderstood. I thought no one was home, so I wanted to help you look after the house."
"Auntie is so good at talking. She's here to take care of the family, but it's obvious she's here to steal things."
Chang Xixi grabbed Li's hand and showed it to the villagers, "This thing is mine! Before I got married, Dou went to the county to collect my father's wages and made me a silver bracelet. But she didn't want it to look plain, so she gilded it."
A villager came forward and took a closer look at the bracelet on Li's wrist. Li suddenly withdrew her hand and hid it behind her back.
"Yes, this is the bracelet that Dou bought on the street that day. I remember the pattern on the bracelet. Dou and I picked it out together."
Seeing this, the villagers also had a clue in their mind. They pulled Chang Xixi's sleeve and walked to the side. "What are you going to do? Don't air your dirty laundry in public."
Chang Xixi thought about it and decided that she had to teach Li a lesson. She couldn't let her get away with it for nothing. No one who could take advantage of her had appeared yet.
Maybe, she traveled here to deal with these bad guys and shrews.
"We are all family. It would be inappropriate to be magnanimous when meeting officials. As the saying goes, a son hides for his father and a father hides for his son." Chang Xixi kept saying.
Chang Xixi's words and actions implied that she would not pursue the matter, so the village chief left.
As soon as the villagers left, they heard a scream in the yard. The brave villagers pushed the door open and entered the house, only to see Li lying on the ground with one leg hanging down.
Chang Xixi was holding a hoe in her hand, her eyes were ferocious but her face was very calm.
The villagers left and came back, filling the yard again. "Since you are my aunt, I will not pursue the matter at this time. I will only break one of your legs. You can take care of yourself in the future."
"I am your uncle's wife, how dare you do this to me! I will tell Dou Shi when I get home and beat you up for running around."
Chang Xixi squatted down, pulled the bracelet off Li's wrist with force, put it in her arms, and slapped Li in the face.
"Don't think I don't know what you're up to! As long as I, Chang Xixi, am here, you can never dream of entering my and my husband's house. In the past, I gave you some face for my mother's sake, but if you continue to push me, don't blame me for being ruthless."
"He stole things and bit people! He's a mad dog."
Li felt both pain and shame, she lowered her head and said nothing, her fair arms were stripped of skin.
The village chief also came back and saw Li like this. He asked several village women to carry the person away. He could only sigh in his heart that Chang Xixi was also cruel and ruthless.
