Chapter 6 Auntie Comes to Make Trouble

Chang Xixi didn't get angry either. She handed the peanuts to her second brother and said, "Second brother, peel some so we can make porridge tonight."

Dou was just about to apologize to her sister-in-law and second brother, but she didn't expect Xixi to be so sensible today. She didn't lose her temper, but took the initiative to greet them and smiled with relief.

"Let's be frank. Sister-in-law, you've been married into the Chang family for so many years, and you haven't taken care of the elderly at all, leaving everything to us as the head of the household. The shop's income is low and its expenditure is high. It's almost the end of the year, and we can't pay the wages. I thought about borrowing some money from you, your family, as they are still well off."

Dou was in a dilemma.

The eldest son and the old man in the family both work as laborers at the docks, earning only a few hundred dollars a month. The family's fields are all supported by her alone. Her second son is paralyzed at home and needs medicine all year round. Where does she get the spare money?

The only money she had was a few taels of silver from pawning Xixi's jewelry. Dou felt the change in her coarse cloth clothes.

This scene happened to be seen by the sharp-eyed Second Aunt. A hint of cunning flashed in her eyes and she immediately wiped away tears.

"Sister-in-law, I won't hide it from you. My family has been eating porridge for quite some time. I only have this set of decent clothes in the family, and it's just for the sake of face."

Chang Xixi raised the corner of her mouth. The bracelet on her fair wrist would be worth a lot of money if sold!

Come to cry poor?

In the memory of the original owner, Chang Xixi knew that Dou was used to being soft-hearted and couldn't bear to see others complain to her.

"Mom, go and return the rice you borrowed from your sister-in-law next door this morning! It's not good to owe others money." Chang Xixi deliberately spoke loudly.

Dou then remembered this matter and asked her sister-in-law and second brother to stay at home, and she would be back soon.

After Dou left, Chang Xixi lay down beside her second brother's legs and cried.

"Second brother! You seem to be feeling better today. Mother was so happy that she sold some eggs and bought some rice. It's hard for you to drink rice soup every day. It's my fault that I let Mr. Zhang cheat me out of my money."
