0167 Compensation
The next day, when Xiang Nannan arrived, she happened to run into Jiang Jifan having lunch.
She glanced down at the soups and broths on the table. "Do you eat this bland food every day?"
Although Tantai Qing or the caregiver would tell her what dishes were served before each meal, Jiang Jifan didn't remember any of them. She ate whatever they scooped out, and the taste was always pretty much the same.
"I think so," she said.
"That's no fun. How about I order you some hot pot?"
Upon hearing her words, the caregiver immediately said, "Miss Xiang, Miss Jiang has just recovered from a serious illness and cannot eat those kinds of random things yet."
Before leaving, Tantai Qing specifically instructed her not to give Jiang Jifan any food.
"Don't let the simple appearance of these dishes fool you, they're all made by five-star chefs..."
Xiang Nannan herself was someone who never watched what she ate when she was sick, and she thought everyone should be like her. After hearing this, she dared not do anything reckless anymore.
After regaining some strength, Jiang Jifan asked to eat by herself. Tantai Qing initially didn't want her to eat by herself, but after hearing from the caregiver that it would promote recovery, she had no choice but to agree.
She sipped her bird's nest porridge slowly, listening to their conversation and occasionally replying.
She had a poor appetite and only ate a small bowl of porridge and some snacks before putting down her spoon.
The caregiver said she ate as little as a cat and tried to persuade her to eat more, but she refused.
Later, someone knocked on the door. Just then, the caregiver was cleaning up the food that Jiang Jifan hadn't finished eating. Seeing that she was busy, Xiang Nannan went up to open the door herself.
When she opened the door and saw her mother, she exclaimed in surprise, "Mom? What brings you here?"
Xu Yan glanced at her and mocked, "What? As clueless as you, you don't even know to tell your family that your savior has woken up?"
"That's not true at all!" Xiang Nannan retorted.
"Mom, come in and sit down."
Xu Yan followed her inside and soon saw Jiang Jifan sitting on the bed.
"Hello, Miss Jiang, I am Nan Nan's mother. I heard you woke up, so I came to see you."
Jiang Jifan smiled and said, "Hello, Auntie."
Xu Yan sat down on the sofa, looked at her and said in a gentle voice, "My surname is Xu, and my given name is Yan. You can just call me Aunt Xu, like Tai Qing does."
She nodded and said, "Okay, Aunt Xu."
"Ji Fan, thank you for protecting our Nan Nan that day. If it weren't for you, we really wouldn't know what to do," Xu Yan sighed gratefully.
“Nian’s father also said he wanted to come and see you, but unfortunately, he’s been quite busy these past few days.”
Jiang Jifan remained composed and said calmly, "You're too kind. I've always treated Nannan like a younger sister; it's only right."
Seeing her like this, Xu Yan felt a sense of goodwill and smiled, "We only have one child, Nan Nan, and she doesn't have any other brothers or sisters. Ji Fan, if you don't mind, from today onwards, you are a child of the Xiang family. Let Nan Nan take good care of you, her older sister, okay?"
Upon hearing this, she immediately declined, saying, "No need, Aunt Xu, I..."
Xiang Nannan interrupted her, "Oh, don't refuse! It's settled then!"
She put her hands on her hips and said, "Jifan, from now on you are a daughter of the Xiang family. If anyone dares to bully you, just say the name of the Xiang family! I'll take care of them for you!"
Jiang Jifan smiled helplessly, and finally, at her urging, called Xu Yan "godmother".
"Hey." Xu Yan smiled broadly upon hearing this, and took her hands, saying, "Ji Fan, from now on we're family. If you encounter any difficulties in life, be sure to tell us, and we'll do our best to help you..."
When Tantai Qing returned from the company, he saw her sitting on the bed in a daze, clutching a check, and asked her, "Did someone come?"
Jiang Jifan then came to her senses. She looked down and squeezed the check in her hand, replying, "Yes, Nannan's mother is here."
He sat down next to her, and when he saw the amount on the check written in capital letters as "thirty million," he fell silent, afraid that their direct act of giving money would hurt her pride. So he explained, "Jifan, Nannan and Aunt Xu are very grateful to you. Please don't mind."
Jiang Jifan knew why he said that, but what did she have to be so high-minded about now?
She handed the check to her side and said, "Please keep it for me."
Seeing that her expression was normal, Tantai Qing felt relieved.
"good."
Later, after he said something more, Jiang Jifan learned that all of his hospital medical expenses had been paid by his family.
She felt a strange sense of relief.
This is for the best; it prevents her from owing him so much...
That evening, Jiang Jifan suggested that he wanted to take a shower.
When she learned that she hadn't taken a proper shower since her car accident, her face darkened. She tried to hold back, but finally couldn't resist her obsessive-compulsive disorder.
But in fact, her current condition is not suitable for taking a bath. Tantai Qing tried to persuade her again and again, but he couldn't persuade her otherwise, so he could only ask someone to prepare one.
Jiang Jifan lay in the bathtub with his eyes closed. His left leg and right hand, which were in casts, were immobilized and some distance from the water in the bathtub.
The warm water made her feel incredibly comfortable, as if every pore on her body was opening up.
Caregiver Aunt Li sat on a small stool next to the bathtub to wash her hair.
"Auntie, do I look ugly now?" she suddenly asked.
As the plump Aunt Li washed her hair, she laughed and said, "No, it looks beautiful. Mr. Dan has taken good care of you, making you fair and tender. He's put in much more effort than I have."
Jiang Jifan had seen herself looking like skin and bones before, which was an unhealthy and unattractive appearance. Hearing this, she only thought that the other woman was flattering her and did not believe it.
Seeing that she didn't believe him, Aunt Li added, "Mr. Dan puts those fragrant things on your face and body every day. He says that if you do that, when you wake up, you'll find that you're still as beautiful as before."
Jiang Jifan was slightly taken aback.
She hadn't expected him to be so meticulous...
"You don't know, every time you're resuscitated, Mr. Dan cries his eyes out, it's heartbreaking to see!"
Tantai Qing was crying her eyes out? She couldn't believe it...
Jiang Jifan felt that her words were exaggerated and was skeptical.
Afterwards, Aunt Li continued to ramble on about how much Tantai Qing cared for her, to the point that Jiang Jifan began to suspect that she was a lobbyist he had hired.
Aunt Li also said that she had served so many people with limited mobility, all of whom were bedridden and expected to be waited on hand and foot. She was the first person she had met who was so clean and self-reliant.
Jiang Jifan neither agreed nor disagreed.
Although she is blind, she does not rely on them excessively. For example, she insists on eating by herself and resolutely refuses to relieve herself in bed.
Even if she has to crawl, she'll crawl to the toilet.
So much so that Aunt Li often said she didn't seem like a patient.
Fortunately, the caregiver was quite strong and was able to meet some of her seemingly unreasonable demands.
Given her current awkward situation with Tantai Qing, Jiang Jifan didn't want to trouble him too much, especially with things that went beyond what's typical between ex-boyfriends and ex-girlfriends.
Not when she's not fully conscious, but at least when she is conscious, it shouldn't be...
After taking a shower, Jiang Jifan felt refreshed and his mood improved considerably.
Tantai Qing took a hairdryer and said she would dry her hair for her. She originally wanted to ask Aunt Li to do it, but the next second Aunt Li hurriedly left on the grounds of having a stomachache.
Jiang Jifan opened his mouth several times, but in the end he gave up.
She didn't know if he did it on purpose, but his blow-drying of her hair, which should have taken only ten minutes, took several tens of minutes. He even made her sit in one position until her butt started to hurt, but he still didn't stop.
"alright."
He finally stopped when she couldn't help but intervene.
Because they were so close, the fragrance of her hair kept wafting into his nose, making Tantai Qing a little distracted. Taking advantage of her noticing, he picked up a strand of her hair and lowered his head to kiss it.
Jiang Jifan happened to turn his head, his head bumping into his, his body stiffening, and he immediately guessed what he was doing.
Tantai Qing loosened her grip on the strand of hair, acting as if nothing had happened.
"It's getting late, go to sleep."
She pursed her lips, but ultimately said nothing and obediently lay down.
