Chapter 11 Walkthrough: Halfway through the eleventh day of harassment.
Xiang Di was very happy to be Bai Jiangxin's deskmate.
She dreamed of being Bai Jiangxin's deskmate, but when that day actually came, she didn't dare to.
But she had no choice; she dared not disobey her homeroom teacher's orders and could only bite the bullet and move the desks.
When Xiang Di saw her desk merged with Bai Jiangxin's desk, she felt a sense of unreality.
I felt light and airy from head to toe.
She sat down lightly. Normally, she wished her eyes could turn into radar, searching for Bai Jiangxin 24 hours a day. Now that he was right next to her, she could see him with just a slight turn of her head, but she dared not look at him.
I really wanted to say hello to him, or maybe offer some guidance, but the words stuck in my throat.
Perhaps it's best not to try and fawn over someone who doesn't reciprocate your feelings. Haven't you learned your lesson from the morning self-study session yet?
With the new seating arrangements settled, some are happy while others are sad. After all, whether the seat is good or bad, and what the deskmate is like, will directly affect one's enthusiasm for learning. If you sit in a bad seat and have an annoying deskmate, you might not even want to go to school, let alone study.
Chen Jinghua said, "The seating arrangement is as it is, based on your individual circumstances. As for why it is arranged this way, the teacher has her reasons. You just need to know that the teacher would never harm you; it's all for your own good. With so many people in the class, it's impossible to arrange seating to everyone's satisfaction."
Suddenly, a boy sitting in the VIP seat next to the podium muttered, "Then why should I sit in the VIP seat?"
"Wang Sichen, what are you complaining about? Don't you know why I arranged you in the VIP room? You talk more than any old lady selling vegetables at the market. I arranged a deskmate for you, and you're always whispering to her. How are you supposed to get into university?"
The boy named Wang Sichen argued, "Then teacher, you can assign me a deskmate who doesn't like to talk."
Chen Jinghua scoffed, "I'll even arrange for you to sit next to someone who doesn't like to talk. Even if I arranged for you to sit next to a mute person, you could still chat with them using sign language like crazy."
Laughter filled the classroom. Wang Sichen, shameless as ever, pouted and said, "I'm just exchanging pleasantries with my deskmate."
"You just need to connect with your teacher."
"That's so boring."
"So, who do you think would be interesting to connect with?" Chen Jinghua couldn't help but laugh. "Is it interesting to arrange a female deskmate for you? Do you want to connect with someone, or develop a relationship?"
Teenagers love this kind of joke, and the laughter grew even louder. Wang Sicheng looked embarrassed and suddenly pointed to the prime seat in the middle of the classroom.
"If we're talking about developing feelings, teacher, you've arranged for Bai Jiangxin and Ye Minjia to be deskmates with girls. Isn't that creating opportunities for them?"
As soon as he said this, everyone's eyes turned to the two people he had named.
Indeed, the teacher's seating arrangement this time was quite unexpected. Usually, the teacher tries not to arrange boys and girls to sit together. Even if they do, it is after careful consideration. You can tell at a glance that these two are definitely not going to develop a relationship. They are purely study partners or cleaning partners. Boys and girls working together doubles the efficiency.
Ye Minjia and Liang Qianqian are alright, one is the class monitor and the other is the subject representative, but Bai Jiangxin and Xiang Di...
Bai Jiangxin goes without saying; those who know, know. He's famously aloof and independent. As a top student, he certainly has the right to be aloof. As for Xiang Di, aside from being lively when he's with a few girls he's close to in class, he's usually quite quiet and doesn't talk much to the boys in class.
The boys in the class occasionally talked about her. Since they didn't know her well, they couldn't really give her a rating. To be honest, she was actually quite innocent-looking. Her features were the kind that would seduce straight men: almond-shaped eyes, pink lips, and an oval face. She was beautiful without being aggressive, and her skin was fair. She was the kind of girl who smelled nice at first glance. She just had too much of a girl-next-door vibe. Making jokes about her made me feel inexplicably guilty.
Do these two people know each other?
"Wang Sichen, why do you care so much? Just focus on maintaining your own grades. I didn't even bother to comment on your ranking in the last joint exam. You'll be the only one in the class who didn't make it to the key university admission line. Let's see how you explain that to your parents."
“They’re different from you. They know what’s most important right now. Who they sit next to won’t interfere with their studies. Do you think they’re like you, with nothing on your mind but studying all day long?”
As soon as he finished speaking, Chen Jinghua raised his chin again, specifically addressing Bai Jiangxin: "You agree, right?"
Bai Jiangxin was wondering when he could finally escape the daily harassment from someone's thoughts when he was suddenly called out. He was a little confused, but still gave the teacher a polite nod.
Chen Jinghua finally started the class and asked everyone to take out the test papers that had been handed out a few days ago.
Xiang Di quickly searched through the desk, wondering if fate was deliberately creating an opportunity for her to talk to Bai Jiangxin. There were a bunch of test papers on the desk, but she couldn't find that one one.
Fortunately, she wasn't the only one who couldn't find it. Someone said, "Teacher, those papers were handed out a long time ago. There are too many papers, and we can't find them."
Chen Jinghua clicked his tongue: "You can't even keep a single test paper safe. If you can't find yours, just share it with your deskmate."
Xiang Di: "..."
[Oh my god, that assist was absolutely brilliant!]
[This devout woman wishes to live a life of balanced diet, free from labor, with no worries about food or clothing, enjoying the fruits of others' labor without reward, and providing for you without any effort.]
Bai Jiangxin: "..."
They ate and took.
[Xiang Di! Your golden opportunity to make your crush come true has arrived! Today you'll be looking at the same exam paper, tomorrow you'll be sleeping in the same bed!]
Then, dating, engagement, meeting the parents, marriage, obtaining the marriage certificate, and holding the wedding banquet all happen in one go, and your bright future together is just around the corner!
Whether you can grow old with him in a rocking chair in the future depends on your actions now, so go for it!
Bai Jiangxin: "..."
However, the person who was cheering himself on just a second ago suddenly collapsed onto the table.
The louder the slogans and the more wonderful the imagination, the less daring one is.
[Waaah, I still don't dare.]
Bai Jiangxin tugged at the corner of his lips.
So what? What's the point of God giving her a boost? What's the purpose of that long wind-up animation?
On the podium, the teacher had almost finished explaining the multiple-choice questions. If this continued, the entire test paper would be finished, but she was still pushing forward.
Oh well. After all, she didn't mean to miss the exam paper.
Just as Bai Jiangxin was about to move the test paper a little, Xiang Di suddenly sat up, turned to Liang Qianqian and said, "Qianqian, I can't find my test paper. Can I borrow yours?"
"Huh?" Liang Qianqian blinked and glanced at the back of Bai Jiangxin's head. "You can look at one with Bai Jiangxin."
"Oh dear, he definitely won't lend it to me. Please, lend it to me, and I'll treat you to grilled sausages."
"How do you know he wouldn't if you didn't even ask..."
Before Liang Qianqian could finish speaking, Xiang Di had already snatched her test paper away and then quickly turned his head back.
With the exam papers in hand, Xiang Di finally breathed a sigh of relief.
That way, there's no need to borrow the exam papers from Bai Jiangxin.
Now I can finally pay attention in class.
She could now concentrate on the lesson, but Bai Jiangxin's expression was not good.
What's the meaning?
He was shouting his inner slogans louder than anyone else, fantasizing about growing old together, which drove him crazy. But it was all for nothing.
Either be honest and don't have any thoughts about him or disturb his peace, or be bolder. Otherwise, what's the difference between this and harassing someone and then suddenly pulling up your pants and saying, "Sorry, I suddenly realized this is illegal, so goodbye."
If harassment starts halfway and then abruptly stops, does that mean it's no longer harassment?
Bai Jiangxin: "Xiang Di."
Xiang Di, who was diligently taking notes, looked up and asked, "Huh?"
Her innocent eyes made it seem as if the person who had just planned out the entire process of their relationship and marriage wasn't her at all.
Bai Jiangxin paused for a moment, while Xiang Di was still wondering why he called her. She looked down and suddenly realized that she had been so focused on taking notes that she hadn't even noticed that her arm had crossed the 38th parallel.
It must be because of this!
"Oh, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to."
She quickly pulled her arm back and moved her chair to the other side, trying to get as far away from him as possible.
She then smiled politely at him and continued taking notes.
After doing all that, she felt quite pleased with herself, thinking to herself proudly: "Hmph, luckily I was clever enough, otherwise he would have hated me."
Bai Jiangxin suddenly didn't know what to say, so he could only give up.
No matter how much she fantasized about him in her heart, at least on the surface, her sense of propriety was impeccable. She even avoided him as much as possible, for fear of offending him and leaving him with no excuse to blame her.
Bai Jiangxin remained silent, outwardly calm, but inwardly his heart was like a dormant volcano, churning and boiling, threatening to erupt at any moment.
What's wrong with the homeroom teacher? Why did he suddenly arrange for Xiang Di to be his deskmate?
He clicked his tongue and rubbed his temples hard, his fair and handsome face filled with irritation.
She thought that pulling one arm back would be enough, and that moving the chair would be enough.
But what she truly crossed the line and disturbed him was far more than just an arm and a chair.
-
After her test paper was snatched away, Liang Qianqian had no choice but to say to Ye Minjia, "Class monitor, my test paper was snatched away. Let's share one."
Ye Minjia generously moved the test paper over and looked at it with her.
Looking at the backs of the two people in the front row, Ye Minjia looked thoughtful.
"Hey, I have a question for you." He suddenly leaned closer to Liang Qianqian.
Liang Qianqian: "Huh?"
"You're with Xiang Di every day. What do you think of her relationship with Bai Jiangxin?" He paused, narrowing his eyes slightly.
"How was it?" Liang Qianqian said. "Not so good."
Ye Minjia: "Why?"
Liang Qianqian shrugged: "If they're not even willing to look at a single exam paper, how good can our relationship be?"
Ye Minjia clicked his tongue: "You just don't understand."
Liang Qianqian asked, puzzled, "Don't understand what?"
"It's nothing." Ye Minjia looked at her affectionately. "Go home, child. Remember to sit at the children's table when you eat next time."
Liang Qianqian glared at him, completely bewildered.
Looking at the two people in front of her, who were clearly deskmates with their desks next to each other, it was as if there was a galaxy between them. Ye Minjia was immediately more certain in her heart.
True friendship is about being open and honest; if you're so cautious that you avoid even looking at the same exam paper, then something's fishy going on.
He was certain that there was something fishy going on between those two.
-
As soon as get out of class ended, Xiang Di dragged Liang Qianqian to the restroom.
After Liang Qianqian finished, she asked Xiang Di as usual if he was done, and Xiang Di said he wasn't.
Liang Qianqian said, "Then I'll wait for you outside."
"Don't wait for me, I think I have a bit of diarrhea, you should go back to the classroom first."
"I'll be going now."
"Uh-huh."
However, not long after Liang Qianqian left, Xiang Di sneaked out of the restroom.
She didn't go back to the classroom. She stood in the corridor in a daze until the bell rang for class, and then slowly made her way back to the classroom.
At the end of the day, Xiang Di would go to the toilet as soon as get out of class ended. Although girls like to go to the toilet in groups, Liang Qianqian couldn't accompany her every break.
Liang Qianqian was a little worried that Xiang Di might have eaten something that upset her stomach, and asked her if she should take a day off to go to the hospital to get checked out.
Xiang Di said, "No need, no need, I'm perfectly fine."
Once she left the classroom and felt the breeze in the corridor, her heartbeat calmed down a little.
The early spring nights are still cool, perfect for calming the mind and letting the flute play a whimsical tune.
She felt awkward after class because she didn't have much to talk about with Bai Jiangxin, so she had to make an excuse to leave the classroom. But she was reluctant to actually ask for leave.
Xiang Di was a little angry with herself. She'd been longing for this for three years, and now that her dream had come true, why was she chickening out again?
She thought she must have gotten used to having a crush, used to silently admiring that person, used to being an observer. Having a crush doesn't require any courage. Because she was used to being a coward, when she was actually pushed in front of that person, she became timid instead.
She even considered going to her homeroom teacher to ask for a different seat; she was more used to being a coward.
Sigh, so some people deserve to only ever have unrequited love in their lives.
Xiang Di found himself at the office door as if possessed.
Just as she was about to go in, she noticed that Bai Jiangxin was also there.
Her heart tightened, and before she could even flinch, she heard the homeroom teacher ask her, "Do you have some kind of conflict with Xiang Di? Why don't you want to be her deskmate?"
