Nan Xian looked up at the mountain peak that was so close at hand, then looked back at the narrow path that had been left behind, and was momentarily dazed.
My fingers gently brushed against the hard mountain wall; the rough texture felt so real, yet for some reason, I couldn't feel the cold that I should have felt.
At that moment, she suddenly realized that this was another dream.
A feeling she couldn't quite define—a mixture of joy and helplessness— welled up within her. She thought for a moment, then raised her hand, gazing at it intently, a thoughtful look flashing in her eyes.
Since this is my own dream, does that mean I can do whatever I want?
She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and imagined what the flower looked like.
My palm softened, and it reappeared in my hand.
Nan Xian was overjoyed, but then she heard the familiar bird call again. The elusive little blue bird reappeared, flying at an extremely fast speed with a pointed little beak, its target the flower.
She quickly tucked the flower behind her back, her gaze fixed on the little bird, and softly said, "Stop!"
The little blue bird froze instantly. It stood in mid-air for a second with its wings outstretched and eyes wide open, then crashed to the ground with a "thud".
Nan Xian walked forward unhurriedly, bent down to examine it, and asked, "Why did you steal my flowers?"
Upon hearing this, the little bluebird immediately sprang to its feet, put its wings on its hips, and began to chatter away in bird language.
Nan Xian couldn't understand a single word, so she simply raised her hand and said, "Speak human language!"
The little bluebird was taken aback, then spoke again, and its voice indeed became human language: "This mountain is my home, and those flowers are my flowers too! You are not allowed to pick them!"
Nan Xian laughed, crossed her arms and looked at it, "Oh, so you think it's yours just because you say so? Then I'll say not only this mountain, but everything here is mine, including you—you're mine too!"
Upon hearing this, the little bluebird chirped in surprise, its tiny, beady eyes widening instantly, and the feathers on its cheeks bristling. "You, you shameless human, how dare you flirt with me! How dare you!"
Nan Xian was taken aback, then burst into laughter: "Hahahaha, you little bird, you actually know what flirting is!"
"What are you laughing at!" Hearing this, the bird's feathers stood on end even more. It jumped up and down angrily, pecking at Nan Xian's hand with its sharp beak. "Don't laugh! Don't laugh!"
Nan Xian wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes, flicked her finger, and easily sent them flying far away.
The little bluebird slammed onto the stone wall with a "plop," slowly sliding down and silently spreading out like a bird pancake.
She looked down at it leisurely, then poked its fluffy head with a finger. "Tell me where this is, and I'll give the flower back to you, okay?"
The little bluebird closed its eyes and pretended to be dead, ignoring her.
Nan Xian raised an eyebrow, let out a surprised "Oh ho!", and said, "You little thing, don't let your small size fool you, you have quite the temper... If this weren't a dream, I'd really like to keep one like you as a pet..."
Her next sentence was a muttered word, but she didn't expect the little bluebird to have such good hearing that it heard it all and immediately became unhappy.
It sprang up again with a "whoosh," raised its head arrogantly, and gave her a disdainful "humph."
"You think you can take care of me? Do you even know who my previous owner was? You'd be terrified if I told you!"
Before Nan Xian could ask, it answered itself: "Bestowed by Heaven, the only guardian demon of the Nine Provinces—Lord Red Fox! How about it, are you scared now!"
After saying that, it proudly shook its feathers, looking quite pleased with itself.
Nan Xian slowly raised her eyebrows.
Guardian demons, a red fox... and this mountain, this little world...
Hmm? Something feels off.
Could this be referring to my past life?
