Chapter 229 "Fairy, watch your moves!"

Upon seeing this, Yu Lin looked puzzled: "Not here? Why?"

Nan Xian placed the bouquet of flowers on the bedside table, her fingertips gently tracing the delicate petals.

"We've been here for most of the day, and despite knowing there's something fishy going on in the village, we haven't found any direct evidence to prove it. That shows they're extremely cautious. But you just went to pick a flower, and they were exposed... Do you think that makes sense?"

Following her train of thought, Yu Lin pondered for a moment, his expression changing slightly, and he suddenly realized, "That's right! If I were hiding in the shadows to harm someone, the closer they got to my hiding place, the less I could panic. I had to act as if nothing was wrong to avoid being discovered. On the contrary, if I wanted to lure someone into a trap, I would deliberately expose a few flaws..." As he spoke, he patted his chest with lingering fear and looked at Nan Xian gratefully, "Luckily, you're smart enough to see through their tricks. Otherwise, if I had gone up the back mountain, I don't know what dangers I would have encountered."

Nan Xian smiled knowingly.

"But we really have to go to this back mountain."

In the dead of night, the lights in Buxian Village went out one by one, the earth fell asleep, and all was silent.

Two figures stealthily scaled the courtyard wall and slipped along the path towards the back mountain.

It was Nan Xian and Yu Lin.

"Sister, look over there!" Yu Lin called out to Nan Xian, pointing in a certain direction, his voice a little nervous.

Nan Xian looked in that direction and saw a faint blue flame floating in the woods not far away, swaying gently.

“That’s will-o’-the-wisp,” she said. “Don’t be afraid. Will-o’-the-wisp is just a chemical phenomenon caused by the spontaneous combustion of phosphine. Although it is very rare, it is not inexplicable by science.”

As soon as he finished speaking, a dozen or so identical will-o'-the-wisps lit up in the woods.

They were arranged neatly, roughly in two rows, drawing a dark blue path through the woods.

Yu Lin was so terrified by the bizarre scene before him that cold sweat broke out on his back. He swallowed hard and whispered, "Sister... can this be explained scientifically?"

Nan Xian's lips twitched slightly. "That's a matter for metaphysics."

In any case, it was clear that these will-o'-the-wisps were one of the tricks used by the person behind the scenes. No pain, no gain, so even though the two were very scared, they still gritted their teeth and followed.

Apart from their breathing and footsteps, there was not a sound around them, not even the winter night wind.

The pitch-black forest stretched as far as the eye could see, like a crouching beast ready to devour them at any moment.

The deeper you go, the fainter the light of those will-o'-the-wisps becomes.

Just as Nan Xian slowly put her foot down at the last wisp of will-o'-the-wisp, she heard a very faint "whoosh" sound, and then all the light behind her went out.

Yu Lin took out his phone to try and get some light, but found that no matter how he pressed the buttons, the phone wouldn't respond, and the spare lighter in his pocket had also disappeared.

A layer of cold sweat slowly crept up his back, and he subconsciously moved closer to Nan Xian.

Nan Xian noticed his nervousness and gently took his hand. Her warm body temperature seemed to have a soothing effect, which made his tense heartstrings relax a little.

The two stood quietly in the darkness, holding their breath and waiting.

Suddenly, the wind picked up, and the treetops around them began to sway violently, making a chilling rustling sound.

Nan Xian suddenly opened her eyes wide, a golden glint flashing across her pupils.

She reached into the bag slung over her back with her right hand and accurately grabbed a thermos. Her left hand swiftly unscrewed the lid, and with a deft turn, she thrust her right hand forward—

"Fairy, watch your move!"
