This is their third day stranded on the deserted island.
The number of wild rabbits in the grain reserve increased from one to five. He Mingxiao cut down trees to build a fence for them, and Nan Xian named them.
She stood by the fence, teasing them with a blade of grass in her hand.
"Xiao Yi, He Mingxiao said we're having you tonight, stewed rabbit soup." She poked the head of the largest wild rabbit among them.
The little one got up, grabbed a blade of grass, and ate it without a care in the world.
Nan Xian turned her head to look at the sea horizon, her eyes lost in thought.
It's been three days, and no search and rescue boats or aircraft have appeared.
She even began to wonder if they had traveled through time.
"Nan Xian."
She turned around.
He Mingxiao stood at the entrance of the cave, carrying a water bottle made of conch shells and palm leaves woven together.
"Let's go check the other side of the woods."
She perked up a little, put on her straw hat, and followed him.
Trapped for three days, the furthest she ever went was that freshwater pond; she never ventured into any deeper water.
The paths in the jungle were difficult to traverse, especially since she had snake and insect repellent leaves strapped to her legs.
She figured it out herself, imitating the shape of tall boots. Although it was bulky, it was indeed effective.
After walking for about two hours, they arrived at a very tall and dense forest.
She watched as some brightly feathered parrots flew from one tree to another and couldn't help but exclaim, "This looks terrifying!"
"Hmm?" He Mingxiao turned to look at her, somewhat confused.
Nan Xian clenched her fist and covered her lips. "Ahem, I mean, these birds are very beautiful."
“Hmm, but parrots require a lot of care, so they might not be suitable for you.” He seemed to have thought of something, and his ears turned slightly red. “If you like pets, you can get a cat. Cats don’t need much space to move around, so they’re very easy to care for.”
"...I am allergic to cat hair."
He Mingxiao froze, then lowered his head in annoyance. "Sorry, I suddenly forgot."
The two continued walking in silence.
Nan Xian was admiring the scenery when suddenly her eyes lit up—
"Wait, what's that...?"
She rushed to a rotting tree, picked a small white mushroom from it, and exclaimed, "He Mingxiao, a mushroom!"
He Mingxiao stepped forward, took it, and examined it carefully.
"They look no different from ordinary white mushrooms. Just to be on the safe side, I'll give a few to the rabbits when we get back."
Nan Xian picked half a basket of mushrooms. On the way back, she thought about mushroom soup, which dispelled her low mood when she arrived. She even unconsciously started humming a song.
He Mingxiao walked ahead, listening to her singing, and the corners of his lips unconsciously turned up.
Back in the cave, Nan Xian immediately cooked some mushrooms, tore them up, and fed them to the wild rabbit Xiao Yi.
Watching it chew and finish the whole thing, Nan Xian poked its head with satisfaction.
"If this mushroom isn't poisonous, Xiao Yi, you'll be a hero. I'll have He Mingxiao put you last so you can live a few more days."
Xiao Yi glanced at her sideways, as if to say, "Then I really thank you."
**
An hour later, Xiao Yi was still lively and energetic, even looking more energetic than before.
Nan Xian was overjoyed. She immediately chopped vegetables and washed the pot. After the water boiled, she added mushrooms and scallions, squeezed a lemon, and sprinkled a few peppercorns.
These are the only two plants they found on the island that can be used as seasonings.
Previously, He Mingxiao had sun-dried some coarse salt from seawater, but because it could not be purified, it tasted very bitter, so he had to give up.
Soon, the steaming hot mushroom soup was ready.
Nan Xian served herself and He Mingxiao a bowl, blew on it, and took a small sip.
She immediately squinted her eyes in satisfaction—
For her, who had been eating wild rabbit meat and crab soup for three days in a row, this bowl of simple mushroom soup in front of her was simply a delicacy!
After gulping down two bowls of soup and eating a few sweet and sour wild fruits, Nanxian felt that the world was beautiful again.
She leaned against the cave, enjoying the sea breeze, watching the seagulls pecking at the small fish and shrimp washed ashore on the beach, and her mood inexplicably lifted.
She turned to look at He Mingxiao, who was carefully carving a soup spoon with a stone knife.
"I have a question that I've been curious about for a long time."
He Mingxiao continued what he was doing, "Hmm?"
"If you hadn't met me, who would you have married?"
He looked up and said without hesitation, "I wouldn't have gotten married if I hadn't met you."
Nan Xian chuckled, raised an eyebrow, and said with a teasing tone, "What about Wei Zeling? Isn't she your childhood sweetheart?"
He Mingxiao frowned almost imperceptibly.
“She and I are at most neighbors. After we grew up, she had more contact with my parents. The relationship between our two families is a bit complicated. More than 20 years ago, her father helped my father a lot. They were a rare benefactor, so my father has always been very grateful to them and they have kept in touch over the years.”
Seeing that Nan Xian was staring intently at him, he quickly added:
“Wei Zeling and I rarely have private contact. If we do, it’s always her who comes to me. I don’t reply unless it’s something important. Is this one of the reasons you asked me to divorce you?”
He seemed to have grasped some clue; his eyes lit up and he stared intently at her.
Nan Xian laughed and waved her hand, "It's all in the past, let's not talk about it anymore. I was just curious."
He Mingxiao lowered his eyes in disappointment.
"Then why did you marry me?" She tilted her head, pointed to her face, and smiled mischievously. "Don't tell me it's because I'm good-looking."
He chuckled softly and looked directly into her eyes.
"If I say it was love at first sight, you might not believe me, but it really is true."
"The moment you opened the door at our first dinner party, I couldn't take my eyes off you."
