Chapter 29 Missed Opportunity

The next morning, it suddenly started raining heavily.

Nan Xian woke up as soon as the rain started. She sat at the entrance of the cave, the wind making her arms feel cold.

She was completely unaware, her eyes fixed on the horizon.

Last night the sky was cloudless and full of stars, but today a sudden downpour has begun.

This doesn't make sense.

Nan Xian had a vague, strange premonition, she couldn't quite put her finger on it, but the last time she had this feeling was on that stormy night.

He Mingxiao sat on the other side of the cave, silently whittling a walking stick.

He hadn't slept all night, his eyes were bloodshot, and his face looked haggard.

He brought Nanxian breakfast in the morning, but she didn't touch it. He tried to persuade her, but Nanxian completely ignored him.

He Mingxiao's heart felt like it was soaking in lemon juice, both sour and astringent.

He mechanically performed the actions at hand, his mind a jumble of thoughts.

Because he was hated by his friends when he was young, he always believed that his curse was extremely ominous.

For many years afterward, he kept the curse his deepest secret, not daring to utter a single word about it, not even to his parents.

But he forgot—

Nan Xian was not that companion. She was kind and tolerant. Although she was allergic to cats, she took in herself who had turned into a kitten.

He had preconceived notions and kept her on the other side of his heart's wall as well.

He was wrong; he shouldn't have kept things from Nan Xian.

He should, he should tell her everything!

A sudden pain shot through his hand; the stone knife had cut his skin, and bright red blood quickly seeped out.

He Mingxiao ignored his wounds and looked up at Nan Xian, his eyes burning with an unprecedented determination.

"Nanxian, actually, I was cursed when I was a child—"

He had barely begun speaking when Nan Xian, who had been sitting still, suddenly stood up and ran wildly toward the beach.

He Mingxiao paused for a moment, then put down his tools and walked out of the cave.

Two rescue helicopters emerged from the rain in the distance, crossed the sea, and landed steadily on the beach.

Several people stepped out of the helicopter and greeted Nan Xian, who was stumbling towards them, by wrapping her in a raincoat.

They whispered something in her ear, and Nan Xian nodded vigorously. Then, they helped her board one of the helicopters.

He Mingxiao stared blankly at the scene, at a loss, until a voice brought him back to his senses.

"Mr. He, we are a rescue team here to take you home. It's raining right now, please come with us, okay?"

He Mingxiao lowered his eyelashes slightly, and his face quickly regained its composure.

"Okay, please wait a few minutes, I have something to take care of."

The rescue team waited at the entrance of the cave and saw him lift several wild rabbits out of the enclosure, and then wrap some odds and ends in palm leaves and carry them in his hand. They scratched their heads, puzzled.

He Mingxiao took one last look back at the cave where he and Nan Xian had spent six days alone.

Let's go.

**

The rescue helicopter landed on the island.

As soon as Nan Xian came down, she was embraced by a familiar embrace.

Mother Nan's face was streaked with tears, and she choked out, "My darling, thank goodness, thank goodness, I knew you'd be alright..."

Nan Xian hugged her tightly, and looking at her father and brother, who were also filled with relief, she couldn't help but feel a lump in her throat and tears welled up in her eyes.

"I'm sorry to have worried you..."

"Waaaaah, Nanxian, you've gotten so dark and thin! Your cheeks are so pale, it breaks my heart to see you like this, waaaaah—"

A loud wail instantly startled Nan Xian back to tears, and she stared in shock at Yao Mingke standing next to her own brother.

Yao Mingke was bare-faced and crying her eyes out, completely losing her composure.

Nan Yi sighed helplessly and took a tissue to wipe her nose.

"Alright, the boat is ready. Let's go to the hospital first."

Yao Mingke nodded hurriedly, "Yes, yes, right, hurry up and get Nan Xian to the hospital!"

Nan Xian's gaze swept between the two of them, and she raised an eyebrow with interest. "You two—"

Nan Yi clenched his fist and coughed softly, a rare blush creeping onto his handsome face.

"We'll talk about this later."

**

The reporters on the island had all been "invited" away by the He Group, so the group encountered no obstacles and sailed back to the nearest inland city.

As soon as the car stopped in front of the hospital, it was immediately surrounded by reporters who had been lying in wait.

Yao Mingke glanced out the car window and immediately gritted his teeth in anger: "These unscrupulous media outlets have no shame when it comes to generating buzz!"

"Nanxian, don't worry, I'll go down and fight them right now, and drive them all away!" With that, she rolled up her sleeves and got out of the car.

Nan Xian raised her hand to stop her, a cold smile curving her lips.

"Don't panic, let me handle it."

She opened the car door, stood on the running board, and glanced at all the reporters behind her sunglasses, raising her hand to signal for silence.

The reporters, who had been chattering away moments before, fell silent upon seeing this and stared at her, bewildered.

Nan Xian's voice was soft, but firm: "One at a time, otherwise I won't answer a single question."

Everyone present was stunned when they heard this.

Whenever such a major event occurs, they don't expect the parties involved to respond; all they want are firsthand photos.

Nan Xian's actions were truly unprecedented for them.

Everyone looked at each other, but no one moved.

Nan Xian raised an eyebrow. "No problem at all? Then let's call it a day."

As soon as he finished speaking, a reporter rushed forward.

"Nan Xian, were you really stranded on a deserted island with President He for six days?"
