Nan Xian didn't know what the Man Ge Hua looked like, so she took on the role of a guard, vigilantly observing her surroundings and watching out for any sudden attacks from the boar beast.
Suddenly, she noticed that several smaller boars were still in the nest, seemingly fast asleep and unaware that someone had broken in.
She leaned closer to examine them more closely and was surprised to find that the boars' bellies were all swollen; they were pregnant!
A rough count revealed that there were at least twenty pregnant boars.
She asked Huo Shaoying in a low voice, "Approximately how many cubs can a boar produce in one litter?"
Without looking up, Huo Shaoying replied, "Don't be fooled by the huge size of the boar beasts now. In fact, they are very small when they are young. They just grow much faster than ordinary beasts... So, they don't need much space in the mother's womb. Sometimes they can give birth to eight or nine at a time."
Nan Xian was shocked by this answer. She knew that cats and dogs usually only have five to six offspring per litter. Moreover, animals at higher levels of the food chain typically have fewer offspring per litter. For example, lions and tigers, as predators, usually only give birth to one to four offspring at a time.
The boar, however, seems to be the complete opposite.
This utterly natural violation of the laws of nature instilled in Nan Xian a chilling sense of dread.
These boars roamed the valley with tyranny. They had no natural enemies, plenty of food, and reproduced quickly. Over time, like some invasive species, their numbers grew exponentially, turning into another kind of "plague" that ravaged the land!
