Chapter 8: Seeking Justice for Her

During the recording, He Mingxiao stood next to Director Zheng.

He was wearing a gray hoodie and khaki casual pants, with sunglasses perched on his nose, his long legs casually splayed out. Assistant Jiang was standing next to him holding a parasol, and a small fan in his other hand.

His rich young master demeanor was so eye-catching that it attracted the attention of the young women in the production team, who frequently stole glances at him, blushing and huddling together to whisper among themselves.

As luck would have it, Nan Xian was standing right in front of him.

Embarrassed, she gripped the ground with her toes, trying her best not to pay attention to him, but out of the corner of her eye, she could still see his bangs constantly swaying in the wind, and her emotions rose and fell like a swing.

Fortunately, this part was over quickly, and the next step was to draw rooms.

All four rooms belong to locals. The best room is built high in the valley, with a good location and plenty of sunlight, and is decorated in a very distinctive way. The worst room is a small mud house, which is not only in a remote location, but you also have to go two miles to get water.

Nan Xian was the first to draw a room and was very lucky to get the best one. Yu Lin was the second, and he got the third room, which was not bad.

Next was Gu Changlin. He paused noticeably when he reached into the box, and when he took out the note and looked at it, his face immediately turned ashen.

Lang Zhuo stepped forward and peeked out, then burst into laughter, teasing, "Chang Lin, looks like you're having a bad day. You still got the worst one out of two!"

Gu Changlin forced a smile, "It's alright, I'm a man, a little hardship is nothing."

That's what he said, but he gave Nan Xian a furtive glance from an angle out of the camera's view.

Nan Xian was speechless, wondering how she had offended him again, but suddenly a thought struck her, and she subconsciously looked at He Mingxiao.

He was clearly waiting for her to look over, gazing at her through his sunglasses, a meaningful smile curving his thin lips, and lightly tapping his right fingertips twice with his arms crossed.

Nan Xian was familiar with this gesture; he would do this after successfully scheming against someone.

What does he mean by that? Is he implying that he was the one who made Gu Changlin take the worst room?

They're already divorced, and he still wants to take credit for himself?

Nan Xian pursed her lips, raised her chin, and turned away like a proud white peacock.

He Mingxiao was slightly taken aback, then couldn't help but chuckle softly.

**

Nan Xian lives in a two-story stilted house. On the first floor lives a family of three: young parents and their thirteen-year-old daughter.

The girl's name was Ajiao. She had honey-colored skin, bright and clear eyes, and wore local ethnic clothing. When she moved, the bells jingled as they rang.

Nanxian used a bag of candy to win over Ajiao and extract a lot of information from her.

This place was originally a large Gu village, and their ancestors were all Gu masters. They had a long tradition of making Gu, but many people died during the great turmoil decades ago.

The surviving villagers hid the book recording the art of Gu poison in a place unknown to anyone. Later, the villagers died, and the art of Gu poison was lost.

"So, you know about Gu, but you don't know how to create it?" Nan Xian asked.

Gillian nodded, glanced at the camera, and whispered in her ear with her hand covering her mouth, "My mother said that Gu is a hoax, there is no such thing as Gu magic!"

Nan Xian mimicked her, "Then what's the meaning of the poisonous snake embroidered on your body?"

Gillian blinked, looking at her with surprise, "Sister, didn't you know that snakes were considered deities in ancient times, and could protect us?"

Nan Xian suddenly realized: "So that's how it is, sister, I've learned something new."

"Not only snakes, but also spiders and scorpions, all of which have very good meanings—oh dear, my mother is calling me to dinner, goodbye sister!"

Watching Ah Jiao skip and hop down the steps, the sound of bells fading into the distance along with the sound of the stream, Nan Xian cupped her face in her hands and fell into deep thought.

**

Night falls early in the valley, and the four of them exchanged information about what they had gained at Langzhuo's house.

Langzhu walked around the entire village, getting a general understanding of the terrain, and also discovered many snakes and insects that were rarely seen elsewhere—he was an insect enthusiast who enjoyed collecting specimens in his spare time.

Gu Changlin was ordered around by the house owner to fetch water all afternoon, and he was so tired that he didn't want to say a word, without getting any clues.

Nan Xian told everyone what the little girl had said, then turned to look at Yu Lin.

Yu Lin scratched his head, a little embarrassed, "I...I ate a lot of delicious food today..."

Others: ......

In conclusion, no one had obtained any valuable clues, so they all went their separate ways.

Nan Xian was walking along the path carrying a lantern when the cameraman filming her suddenly spoke up: "Teacher Nan Xian, if there is a special mission, completing it will grant you an important clue to unraveling the mystery of the Gu technique, but failing to complete it will result in losing all subsequent clues. Are you willing to accept it?"

Nan Xian was somewhat surprised, as she hadn't been informed of any special mission beforehand. "Do I have to make a decision now?"

"You can choose to accept at any time."

"Oh...is this a perk for the female guests?" She raised an eyebrow.

The cameraman nodded.

She thought for a moment, "It's only been a day, it's still early, let me think about it first."

As they were talking, they arrived at the small building.

As soon as she reached the second floor, her expression changed slightly when she saw the person standing in front of her.

"He... what are you doing here?"

He Mingxiao withdrew his gaze from surveying his surroundings, turned to look at her, and gave her a gentle smile.

"I'm not used to living in tents. The production team said there's another room here. If you mind, I can—"

"No need, Mr. He, please stay wherever you like."

Nan Xian forced a smile and slammed her bedroom door shut.

As soon as she entered the room, her face fell instantly. She pointed angrily in the opposite direction and muttered, "He Mingxiao, you did this on purpose!"
