The little fox's feigning sleep trick successfully saved it from a "disaster".
Faced with He Mingxiao's all-seeing gaze, Nan Xian had no choice but to tell him the whole story.
He Mingxiao remained silent for a while, then looked the little fox over thoughtfully and asked, "Are you sure you brought it out of your dream?"
"No, to be precise, the reason I was able to wake up from that dream was because of it."
He Mingxiao raised an eyebrow in surprise, clearly not quite believing that the tiny little one pretending to be asleep in front of him could be so powerful.
Seeing his expression, Nan Xian suddenly felt a sense of shame and annoyance that her own child was being looked down upon, and quickly added, "Don't you believe me? This little guy is small, but he knows a lot. He can even cast spells. I couldn't wake up from my dream no matter what I tried, but he drew a spell on me, and I woke up as soon as I opened and closed my eyes!"
He Mingxiao saw through her little scheme and couldn't help but chuckle. He readily complimented her a few times, then quickly changed the subject:
"Why did you suddenly fall asleep and get caught up in such a... fantastical dream?"
He gazed intently at her, not missing a single expression on her face.
Including the tension and panic that unconsciously showed in her eyes when he asked that question, and the feigned composure that seemed to be trying to cover it up.
Nan Xian feigned calmness as she looked back at him. "President He, you seem to be too concerned about me. Perhaps I should remind you that our relationship is no longer what it used to be, and I have no obligation to report my private affairs to you."
He Mingxiao said in a low voice, "As long as you're willing, our relationship can be restored to what it was before at any time."
Nan Xian chuckled softly but did not answer.
A brief, eerie silence fell between the two, as if the air itself had frozen.
The little fox keenly sensed the strange atmosphere between its parents. Confused, it quietly opened one eye.
A golden light flashed quickly in its little black eyes. It saw a light red thread slowly emerge between Nan Xian and He Mingxiao, connecting their right wrists and tying a small knot in their palms.
It blinked, then immediately pricked up its ears in surprise.
Little Fox: What's going on? Why has the marriage line between my parents become so dim? And—why does the knot on my mother's side look like it's about to come undone at any moment!
This is terrible! This is really terrible!
If my parents can't achieve enlightenment in this lifetime, then I won't be able to save my own life either!
Thinking of this, the little fox's fur stood on end. It didn't care about pretending to be asleep anymore. It jumped up from Nan Xian's palm, rushed to the end of the marriage thread, bit its own paw, and muttered incantations while smearing its fox blood on the loose knot.
However--
Not only did the expected situation of the marriage knot becoming firm not occur, but its fox blood could not even seep into the knot, turning into a wisp of smoke and dissipating into the air as soon as it touched it.
The little fox was dumbfounded, and it tried again, refusing to believe it.
Similarly, it had no effect at all; in fact, the already loose knot was blown about by the smoke formed from the fox blood, making its color even darker.
"How could this be... This is impossible..." It collapsed to the ground, its fox eyes wide with disbelief.
Suddenly, it shuddered, and as if sensing something, it raised its head and sniffed the air with its nose twitching.
"This taste—"
