Chapter 90: His poor judgment is his loss!
Shen Yuejiao, accompanied by two maids, quickly squeezed through the crowd. She had obviously come in a hurry after hearing the news, and her hair was still a little disheveled.
She first bowed to the frightened woman and said apologetically, "Auntie, I'm so sorry, I'm really sorry. My brother has been in a bad mood lately and drank a few too many cups. He's out of his mind and offended you and your son. I apologize to you on his behalf."
As she spoke, she gestured to her maid to take out a money bag and stuff it into the woman's hand: "This little bit of silver is to calm your nerves and your son down. Consider it compensation. Please be magnanimous and don't hold it against my brother, and don't report it to the authorities."
Seeing that Shen Yuejiao was dressed so well, and that she was so sincere and had given generous compensation, the woman's anger dissipated considerably.
She weighed the silver in her hand, muttered a few words like, "Keep an eye on your family from now on, don't let him go out and scare the children," then picked up the still sobbing child and turned to leave.
The crowd gradually dispersed when they realized there was no more excitement to be had.
Shen Yuejiao then turned around, looked at Lu Xinghe who was leaning against the wall and had fallen into a deep sleep, and sighed.
She instructed the servant who had come with her, "Go, help the person into the carriage."
Inside the carriage, Lu Xinghe kept calling out Xiaoyu's name the whole way.
Upon arriving at the Lu family home, Shen Yuejiao knocked on the door and personally handed the person over to Mr. and Mrs. Lu before turning back to the next room.
The maid behind him asked, puzzled, "Miss, Young Master Lu is drunk, why did you bring him back?"
Given that her young mistress likes Young Master Lu, she should personally take care of him at this time; perhaps she can move Young Master Lu's heart.
Upon hearing this, Shen Yuejiao paused in her tracks: "You think I should personally take care of him, serving him tea and water, staying by his side without taking off his clothes, so that when he wakes up and sees me, he will be moved?"
The maid nodded subconsciously.
Isn't that right?
Shen Yuejiao raised her head and said firmly, "Xiaoyu once said that you can be kind to someone by taking the initiative, but you can't give yourself away without reservation, blindly follow others, or lose yourself. At any time, you must put yourself first."
She paused, looking at the tightly closed gate of the Lu family, her voice tinged with a hint of bitterness;
"Besides, didn't you hear? She kept calling out Xiaoyu's name."
"If I, an unmarried young woman, disregard my reputation and take care of a drunk man alone late at night, what will people think? Even if he sobers up, whether he will be grateful to me or think I am frivolous and took advantage of him is another matter."
"I like him, but he has a certain weight to his heart, and I'm not someone to be looked down upon."
The personal maid was stunned, feeling that these words were not something her young mistress would say.
This contradictory attitude left the maid utterly bewildered.
In fact, Shen Yuejiao had wavered in her heart, but in the end, reason prevailed.
It's true that she likes Lu Xinghe, but she would never lower herself to his level, nor would she make cheap, self-indulgent sacrifices when he has someone else in his heart.
As Xiaoyu once said, you can't win someone's heart by flattering them, and you can't earn respect by sacrificing your reputation.
She thought it made a lot of sense.
...
That night, Shen Yuejiao couldn't sleep.
The next day, she invited Su Xiaoyu out for tea, her hands supporting her chin, her face scrunched up like a bitter gourd.
"Little Fish, when do you think he'll finally forget you completely and see how good I am? Sigh!"
This was the 108th time Su Xiaoyu had heard her sigh that morning.
She swallowed the candied hawthorn in her mouth, reached out and poked Shen Yuejiao's forehead, and said in a tone of someone who had been through it all:
“My dear sister, three-legged toads are hard to find, but there are plenty of two-legged men. Look at you, you have a good family background, good looks, a good temperament, and you even know kung fu. Why do you insist on hanging yourself on a... well, a tree that hasn't fully matured yet?”
"If Lu Xinghe has poor judgment, that's his loss!"
Shen Yuejiao burst out laughing at her words, giving her a reproachful look: "I give up, where did you get so many nonsensical words from?"
After laughing, Shen Yuejiao's eyes darted around, and she leaned closer to Su Xiaoyu, her little face full of gossip.
"Hey, stop talking about me, tell me about yourself! You and your young master... um?"
Shen Yuejiao shrugged her eyebrows; "How far has it progressed? Quick, tell the truth!"
Su Xiaoyu was taken aback by the question, and a chaotic night flashed through her mind, along with that unexpected 'kiss' that knocked Xiao Jingheng to the ground.
Her cheeks flushed bright red instantly, and her eyes began to dart around, but she forced herself to remain calm: "What, what step? Don't talk nonsense, it's not true."
Seeing this reaction, Shen Yuejiao knew exactly what was going on. She immediately put on a stern face and pretended to be angry.
"Well, Su Xiaoyu, aren't you being a good sister? Is there something I can't know? I've heard Lu Xinghe calling your name drunkenly all the way here, and you're hiding it from me?"
Su Xiaoyu was embarrassed, and then she caught a glimpse of Shen Yuejiao's 'I'll break up with you if you don't tell the truth' expression. So she blushed, leaned close to Shen Yuejiao's ear, and whispered a few words.
The next second, Shen Yuejiao's almond-shaped eyes widened, and she blurted out in a loud voice:
"Climbing through the window in the middle of the night!"
This shout immediately drew everyone's attention, and they all turned to look at their table.
Su Xiaoyu: "!!!"
She wished she could disappear on the spot, and frantically tried to cover Chen Yuejiao's mouth, which had caused the trouble:
"My goodness! Keep your voice down!"
Shen Yuejiao realized she had lost her composure, so she quickly shrank her neck and gave an awkward smile to the stares coming from all around.
Once everyone's attention had shifted, she grabbed Su Xiaoyu's hand, her eyes shining brightly.
"My God! Young Master Xiao... he actually... this is too much..."
Shen Yuejiao couldn't think of a suitable word to describe him, but she was filled with great curiosity about Xiao Jingheng.
Seeing that she still wanted to speak, Su Xiaoyu quickly picked up a piece of pastry and stuffed it into her mouth.
"Just eat already, stop talking."
Thinking of something, she complained softly, "Hmph, but what's the use of that? They didn't even take me on the autumn hunt."
Hearing her mutter a complaint, Shen Yuejiao couldn't help but ask curiously, "Autumn hunt? You want to go too?"
Su Xiaoyu nodded; "Yes, I want to go and take a look."
She didn't tell Shen Yuejiao the truth, after all, it was a matter of great importance.
Little did she know that this casual grumble would bring Shen Yuejiao hope.
"That's easy. I'll write to my uncle later and ask him to come up with a way for you. You'll definitely be able to sneak in."
Su Xiaoyu stared at her with a suspicious look: "Can your uncle take me to the autumn hunt?"
Even the Prince of Xiao Jingheng refused to take her with him. If someone else were to take her, their status would have to be higher than Xiao Jingheng's.
But among all the people Su Xiaoyu knew, none were more noble than Xiao Jingheng.
So, she gave up.
Unexpectedly, Shen Yuejiao was actually able to help. She couldn't help but be curious.
"Is your uncle an official in the imperial court? I think we should forget about it. If we anger that Prince Juan, it will implicate your uncle."
Shen Yuejiao swallowed the pastry in her mouth, feigning mystery.
"You'll see when the time comes. Leave this to me, don't worry."
